News from the Classrooms

This week in art c lass Monday  in  art  class  we  looked  at  internet  photographs  of  sided-‐walk  chalk  drawings  by  3-‐D  illusion  artist  Julian  Beever.  We  were  amazed!  His  technique,  for  drawing  realistic  3-‐D  scenes  on  a  flat  surface,  is  mind  blowing.  The  website  also  showed  photographs  of  the  drawings  being  made,  so  we  could  get  a  glimpse  into  what  he  goes  through  to  create  a  work  of  art  that  looks  like  it  has  incredible  height,  width  and  depth,  but  actually  doesn't.    Today  we  are  working  in  color,  drawing  a  subject  matter  of  our  choice,  either  a  portrait,  still  life  or  landscape.  Within  the  chosen  subject  matter,  the  students  are  observing  how  they  used  the  Elements  or  Art:  lines,  shapes,  forms,  colors,  textures  and  space,  as  well,  the  Principles  of  Design:  balance,  contrast,  emphasis,  repetition,  and  proportion.

Music Notes♪♪

Students  are  learning  about  the  instrument  families  and  how  they  make  their  sound.    This  week,  the  focus  was  on  string  instruments  in  the  orchestra.    Next  week,  primary  students  will  be  learning  about  instruments  sounds  in  the  music  and  story  of  “Peter  and  the  Wolf”  by  Sergei  Prokofiev.    Intermediate  students  will  be  reviewing  brass  instruments  with  a  short  video  and  playing  Instrument  bingo.          The  school  is  purchasing  Quaver  music  and  the  students  are  very  excited  to  be  able  to  begin  working  with  this  program  again  in  the  near  future!    As  a  reminder,  if  your  child  would  like  to  use  Quaver  Music  at  home,  you  can  register  your  child  for  a  free  Quaver  account.  Simply  visit

www.QuaverMusic.com  and  click  on  the  “Sign  Up”  window  in  the  upper  right  hand  corner  of  the  screen.  Follow  the  onscreen  instructions  for  creating  an  account,  and  be  sure  to  enter  an  active  parent  email  address  when  asked.  After  completing  the  sign  up  process,  you  will  receive  an  email  from  the  Quaver  Team  with  the  option  to  activate  your  student’s  account.  Simply  verify  your  email  address  and  your  student  will  be  able  to  access  all  the  amazing  features  of  the  site,  including  customizing  their  Avatar  or  Music  Room,  as  well  as  being  able  to  retrieve  a  lost  password.    There  are  paid  features  on  the  website  but  your  child  can  have  hours  of  educational  fun  with  the  free  material.        Here  is  a  description  of  the  website:  QuaverMusic.com  is  one  of  the  most  original  kid’s  music  websites  ever  and  a  premier  online  destination  for  kids  to  explore  music!  When  they  step  through  the  door  of  Quaver’s  Music  Shop,  they  enter  a  world  where  they  can  write  the  next  hit  melody,  collaborate  with  a  classmate  on  the  perfect  drum  beat,  and  put  it  all  together  to  share  with  their  friends  and  family.      They  can  travel  through  time  and  space  to  uncover  musical  genres  they  never  knew  they  loved,  decorate  a  music  room  of  their  very  own,  and  win  awards  and  prizes  for  using  their  musical  knowledge  and  imagination.  It’s  a  true  virtual  world  experience  where  kids  find  the  social  interaction  they  want  online,  but  in  a  safe  environment  sure  to  ignite  a  love  of  music  in  them  for  years  to  come!    A  Quaver  app  is  also  available  called  QNex.    I  know  many  of  the  students  are  excited  about  this  program  and  they  are  eager  to  try  it  at  home!    Thanks  for  supporting  your  child’s  music  education!    Mrs.  Mullikin

Library News

This  week  Kindergarten-‐2nd  grade  enjoyed  a  new  book  titled,  The  Gingerbread  Girl  Goes  Animals  Crackers.    The  author  is  Lisa  Campbell  Ernst.    The  Gingerbread  Girl  has  a  birthday  and  gets  animal  crackers  as  a  gift.    Of  course  the  animal  crackers  run  away  and  get  chased  by  many  different  characters  and  end  up  on  the  back  of  a  fox.    The  very  same  fox  that  ate  Gingerbread  Girl’s  brother  and  almost  ate  her.    Ask  your  child  to  tell  you  what  happens.    Next  week  we  will  be  doing  some  drama  skills  by  acting  out  the  book  as  well  as  enjoying  some  animal  crackers….yummy!!!            Hyperlink,  Boolean  search  strategy,  how  to  evaluate  Web  cites,  and  more  were  discussed  as  3rd-‐6th  grades  watched  a  video  called  “Using  the  Internet.”    It  is  from  a  series  of  videos  called  Library  Skills  for  Children.  As  you  may  know,  our  reference  sections  in  school  libraries  are  getting  smaller  and  smaller  because  of  the  vast  amounts  of  information  that  can  be  found  online.  It  is  important  that  we  teach  students  to  safely  use  the  Internet  when  conducting  research.
