VIABILITY

Thé rapid transformation of thé past sixty years has had a profound effect on many aspects ofthé traditional Al Sadu handicraft as a domestic utilitarian activity.

For one, thé Bédouin women today no longer attend to thé hard and strenuous chores of thépast, nor live in woven tents , but live in thé comfort of new homes where easy access to newmachine made goods and modem services has altered their living pattems.Very few women of Bédouin origin hâve continued their traditional craft ofweaving. Théfew who weave today do so both for thé home and for sale outside in thé markets (physicaland online), and are adapting their products to new demands. Many concentrate now onsmaller items such as cushions, small handbags, saddle bags and mngs. Some takecommissions to produce a spécifie rug in spécifie colors, design or size. However, there is a revival, as seen in thé public interest in workshops and classes both inSadu House and in private homes. In 2017, 40 weavers total took part of thé beginners andadvanced classes (24 and 48 hour instruction hours respectively). Thèse classes are open toboth men and women.

VIABILITY

Whilst thé sheep is available and plentiful, thé process oftuming its fleece into yam is bothtime-consuming and arduous. However, persons creating traditional sadu items will only usethé traditional method. Thèse balls ofdyed yam, prepared by master weavers, arc available topurchase at Sadu House Shop.

Practitioners mention how thé sheep's organic diet affects thé feel of thé wool. Mutaira alMussalam prefers thé soft fleece from her family's sheep, who herd in thé wild on natural

Man-made Nylon and acrylic yams in multitude ofbright colors are now available and hâvebecome popular due to low coast. Thèse are now used in binding thé edges and for décorativetassels and braids.

SERIAL NUMBER 14.2 (under Sadu Weaving)

DESCRIPTION Women created thé sadu or tentor other woven items needed on a horizontal

ground loom. It was easy to set up each timefabric was to be woven. Unfinished work could be

rolled up and completed later, making it suitablefor their lifestyle.

Différent sadu looms by Ali Alnajadah

CHARACTERISTICS

Thé horizontal ground loom is typically easy to assemble and transport by thé sadu weaver.

Thé breast beam and back beam are placed on thé outside of thé métal rods, and hold théwarp threads. Warping is thé process ofsetting up thé base threads through which thésideways (weft) weaving is passed. Bricks can be used to hold thé breast beam at an angle.

A heddle rod is placed across thé warp threads. A length ofcotton yam (heddle) is passedaround groups ofwarp thrcads to separate them into pattem group. They are then attached tothé heddle rod, which lifts thé chosen warp threads.

Thé shed stick is inserted horizontally, and further séparâtes thé threads attached to théheddle from those which are not.

Al misha is thé shuttle stick around which thé weft yam is wound.

Al minshaza (al midhrab) is a beater used to keep thé shed or counter shed open so that théshed stick can be passed across thé warp threads.

Al Gim (al medrah) is a gazelle hom, used by struniming it along thé warp threads to ensurethey are separated. Oftentimes, thé gim is passed down as a family heirloom.

Ground looms for beginners can be affixed to table tops. Horizontal looms are also availablefor sadu weaving, and are sometimes preferred to persons with physical ailments.
