Free Indeed!

This coming Saturday, the 4th of July, our nation will celebrate Independence Day. It is a day of fireworks, family, hotdogs, and baked beans. It is a day when we celebrate FREEDOM from oppressive governments. No government has the right to come into our lives and force us to do something without having the authority given to it by the people. People have lots of ideas about this, but it is the thing that makes the United States a special and unique place to live. We love our FREEDOM because it is a special and unique privilege.

Unfortunately, many have taken the idea of FREEDOM from our government and used it as a replacement for the FREEDOM which comes through Christ. Jesus said in John 8:36, “Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” Individuals have thought of FREEDOM in the Bible as the FREEDOM to do whatever I want whenever I want to do it. That is not a Biblical concept. We are slaves to a sovereign God who always maintains the right to direct our lives even in ways that appear contrary to our will. God even reserves the right to judge us when we rebel against His Will. The FREEDOM that is spoken so often about in the Bible is a FREEDOM from the guilt and consequences of our sin. That is the FREEDOM that Jesus provides. I am a son of the King who has been set free from the slavery of sin.

When you watch the fireworks explode in the night time sky or enjoy eating another hotdog, think about the blessing of FREEDOM that we have as citizens of this great country. Let’s also take a moment to reflect on the FREEDOM that Jesus provides us from our own sin. We are free, free indeed!
