Login into the simulator

• Select the server• Enter the client number, username and password

Simulator’s interface

• The interface includes:• The configuration and state file list• The simulation state bar that gives the current status of the simulation• The current information on the simulation, including:

• The Expected and Actual Day duration• The state of the processing

Editing the configuration file

• Editor allows• Changes in duration• Activation of teams• Selection of simulator options

• "Save As" lets the user make a copy of the state file with a different name

• When clicking “Load”, the simulation will read the state file and configure the simulation according to the options set in the editor

• The simCID is a unique identifier that is required to launch any new simulation• Do not lose or share this code

Preparing the simulation

• Once "Start" is clicked, the preparation of the game will occur• This is when the pre-game options will be executed. Other changes

are made into SAP, including setting the initial raw materials price

• Once “Start” is clicked, the simulation will go in the preparation step


Continuing a simulation

• Once preparation is completed, the simulation will pause, allowing you to give further instructions to the participants

• You can then click on “Continue” when you are ready to start the quarter

When the simulator reaches the end of Quarter 0 (the preparation quarter), the “Continue” option becomes available.


Session independence

• Each session in ERPsim is independent• You can have the administration console, the banker’s page and

the viewer’s page opened on the same computer• Only supported with Internet Explorer 7 or using different browsers

• The simulation still runs on the web server if the administrator is logged out• It is important to ALWAYS unloading a simulation when you end

your class

• Two sessions using the same username behave in sync

Pausing the game

• When pausing the game:• If there are any processing remaining for that particular day, they

will be completed and then the game will pause

• A state file is created at this paused state

Using the viewer’s page

• Open a new session in Internet Explorer 7

Using the banker’s page

• At the end of each quarter, the banker is allowed to change the credit rating of every team and apply a bank loan variation

• The credit rating can change during the game automatically:• During a quarter if the team’s cash account goes under € 0, the

credit rating will drop• At the end of the quarter if the team’s cash account stayed above €

0 for the whole quarter, the credit rating will increase

• This page also include the balance sheet and the actual time a day started

Configuration and state files

• The purpose of state files is to keep track of what’s going on in the current simulation in order to continue a game at a certain point in time (virtual quarter and day)

• What is the logic behind the configuration and state files?• The configuration file represent the options that are selected at first• State files are created during the simulation

• It is one of these files that you want to use to resume a simulation• Since state files are not updated (a new one is created instead), you need to use

the one that point to the right Quarter and Day at which you want to resume

• State files contain some data from the simulation, but will not replace the documents in SAP (in case you ask for a client refresh, the simulator will not create again the Purchase Orders, Requisitions, etc.)

State files

• The name of the file includes:• The current day/quarter• The date and time at which the state file was created (usually the moment when

the game was saved)

• End-of-quarter state files are created at the end of a quarter• These files are not erased• Can be used to restart the simulation at the end of a quarter• Their name starts with the quarter at which the file was saved

• Transient state files are created at every step of the simulation• These files are erased when reaching the end of a quarter• Can be used to restart the simulation in the middle of a quarter if a problem

occurred• Their name starts with "state_"


State files

• By default, transient state files are not displayed• Select the “Show state files” option to show them

• State files can be edited• Always keep the “.xml.gz” extension when renaming them!

Administrator’s reports

• Financial Data Reports• General Ledger Accounts

• Lists all the account for the teams and their balance.

• Product Information Reports• Product Marketing Information

• Displays the actual sales price set by the team by distribution channel and product.

• Inventory• Displays the actual inventory for each team

• Product Description• Displays the actual name of the 6 products for each team and the BOM for

each of them.

Managing the simulation fromdifferent locations

• Thinks to consider when you and the participants are not in the same location when playing the game:• The participants may be playing from a computer lab where they

don’t have the necessary authorization to add a server in SAP• They can use a Windows’ Run command instead of configuring

the server in SAP:• SAPGUI <server address> <server number>

• Connection issues can be a problem• Make sure you are able to keep contact with the participants and

pause the game if required

How to practice ?

• Select any server• Enter a client number that starts with a letter• Enter default username and password. Increment number in each scenario.

Practice scenario 1

• Scenario 1 is a refresher course for any participants that have not used the simulator in a while.

• Run a game with quarters of 5 minutes. Two teams will play the game. The goal is to reach the end of the game.

• Answer in powerpoint comments and in video format on the ERPsim learning portal (ERPsim Video Training for Instructors)


Practice scenario 2

• Run a 4 quarters game lasting 5minutes each. Eight teams will play the game on a new SAP client.

• Pause and Continue• Crash browser • Stop, Unload and Resume.• Rename state file at the end of quarter• Answer in powerpoint comments and in video format on

the ERPsim learning portal (ERPsim Video Training for Instructors)


Practice scenario 3

• Scenario 3 demonstrates how the state files allow you to resume the game where you left off.

• Run a game with 5 minutes quarter that will span over two lectures using the same SAP client. The goal is to reach the end of the game.



Practice scenario 4

• Scenario 4 is for extra practice. • Play a 3 quarter game lasting 5 minutes for another group

of your ERPsim course on the same SAP client as scenario 3.



Practice scenario 5

• Run a game lasting 5 minutes per quarter that will span over two lectures for two groups of the ERPsim course on the same SAP client. Note that the lectures are alternating: the first group meets on Mondays and the second group on Tuesdays.



Practice scenario 6

• Run a game where 2 teams have full control over the procurement and production processes.



Practice scenario 7

• Run a game with 2 teams with less financial constraints. What are the different ways to achieve this? How is this affecting the way the game is played?



Practice scenario 8

• Run an intro game to run the manufacturing introductory game (chapter 2).



Practice scenario 9

• Prior to a game, you allowed your students to change their bill of materials, or BOMs for short, in the system. What are the steps that you need to perform in order to check the BOM of each team with the simulator without putting any data in the system?



Practice scenario 10

• Your students have performed all transactions in Chapters 3 and 4. Run a game starting in quarter 2, that would guarantee that all teams have the same financial figures and the same inventory. What do you need to modify in the configuration file?




• Start a simulation and determine how you can identify which teams have difficulty mastering the production process.




• Based on the balance sheet and the profit & lost statement, determine at what stage a team is in its procurement-production process.




• Analyze the financial ratio in the viewer page. What can you conclude from the gross margin, net margin, ROA, D/E and ROE ?
