Background - Conservation Listed as endangered by USFWS in 1967

- part of first listed species under 1966 Endangered Species Preservation Act

Comanche Springs Pupfish are currently found only in 3 springs and 1 creek in TX:

Phantom Lake Spring, San Solomon Spring, Giffin Spring, and Toyah Creek near Balmorhea, Texas

Major Threats:- over pumping of

groundwater- habitat alterations- hybridization

Background - Breeding Typically breed during warmer months (summer) Mating System: - Territorial (large ♂)

- Satellite (medium ♂) - Sneaker (small ♂)

DFP project Objectives

1. Experiment 1: Determine the success rates of pairwise mating of Comanche Springs pupfish in aquaria (e.g., 1M:1F)

2. Experiment 2: Determine if blocking sight to adjacent aquaria increases egg deposition

3. Experiment 3: Determine if 2 females paired with 1 male increases egg deposition

4. Estimate fecundity and gonadosomatic index (GSI)

Methods

5 gallon aquaria, spawning tray w/ a spawning pad held in place by 2 rocks, air-stone, flow-through using a slow rate of input, visual barriers

Results Overall (all experiments combined)

- 759 eggs deposited- 62 fry

Experiment 1: 1M:1F pairs- 102 eggs- 3 fry

Experiment 2: Blocked vision- 71 eggs- 0 fry

Experiment 3: 1M:1F vs 1M:2F- 586 eggs- 59 fry
