.Calvary Church Council September Meeting Highlights
“Missional is a way of living, not an affiliation or activity. Its emergence springs from a belief that God is changing his conversation with the world and with the church. . . . To think and live missionally means seeing all life as a way to be engaged with the mission of God in the world.” (Discussion Guide Missional Renaissance: Changing the Scorecard for the Church by Reggie McNeal, Study Guide by Steve Conway)
Headwinds and tailwinds discussion in reference to the expansion of Clarkston Calvary; or movement is intentional, with communication followed with leadership and training to make a movement that is non-denominational to serve God better by connecting with the community.
Are there other factors in our society today that contribute to the need to shift from “institutional maintenance to incarnational influence”? A cultural shift from an interpersonal to a more online/virtual scope, alternative worship groups (pubs, coffee centers, etc.).

As we begin Advent together – the four (4) weeks of preparing on purpose for a truly Christ-centered Christmas celebration – here are a few ways to continue to be "under construction" in your spiritual growth journey this month. I hope you will plan to get involved:
Pick up and use the free blue Advent daily devotional sheet.
Check out the other Advent resources in our WellSpring Bookstore. Advent candles, books and even some great gifts for both adults and kids are available.
Most importantly, plan daily a few minutes of Advent devotional time using the FAITH5. Take the time to light candles, share highs and lows, read the Bible, talk about it, pray, bless one another, and maybe even sing some carols.
Advent Wednesday Evenings – Nov 29, Dec 6, 13 & 20. We gather at 7pm for Advent worship using the beautiful Holden Village Evening Prayer service. These informal 30-35 minute worship times will be followed (at about 7:30pm) by an opportunity for those who wish to stay for another hour or so to participate in a small group Advent Bible study. See page 14 for the great Advent Growth Group opportunities. Childcare will be available as needed. This is a great time to pause and refocus during this busy time on the "reason for the season".
Advent Wednesday Mornings – Nov 29, Dec 6, 13 & 20. Advent Bible study at 10am led by Pastor Kate.
Plan to hear all four (4) Advent Weekend messages starting with GIFT (Giving In Faith Together) weekend Dec 2 & 3.
Attend the Alexander Zonjic Meets Motown Christmas benefit concert at 4pm on Sunday, December 10th. This is a free will offering to benefit SANCTUM HOUSE for victims of human trafficking. A great opportunity to invite your family and friends!
Explore alternative giving opportunities and help those in need as Jesus would.
Take a gift tag from the gift tree in the Welcome Center at both campuses and return it with a gift attached. Write a Christmas Card to a person serving in our nation's military. You can also make a difference by choosing a unique gift from the ELCA Good Gifts to help people in hurt ing areas (https://community.elca.org/ELCAGoodGifts) or support sustainable global development by purchasing some fair trade coffee gifts through Lutheran World Relief (https://lwr.org). You could also give to a variety of mission and service projects right here in Clarkston, White Lake, Pontiac and far beyond.
Continue generously giving to Calvary’s General Operating Fund so we can end 2017 and begin 2018 strong and ready to expand our ministry and facility with another year of exciting missional outreach and growth.
Make a special end of year gift to the Together Arise Shine capital stewardship fund directly supporting the Clarkston Campus expansion.
Pray for your next step along the Spiritual Growth Pathway. Enter (or re-Enter); Engage (or re-Engage); Equip (or re-Equip); and Extend (or re-Extend). Walking with God is a way of life!

Remember that there is no better time of the year than Christmas to invite someone you know to come to Calvary. People are hungry for real purpose and meaning in their lives and Christmas celebrations. There is someone waiting for your invitation to enter into a relationship with Jesus or to resume their spiritual journey. If not you, then who? If not now, then when?
Jesus said, “You are the light of the world…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14 & 16
This is one of the most profound ways that “you are blessed to be a blessing!”
Spiritual Growth Pathway
Take an intentional step of faith growth along the Spiritual Growth Pathway so that you can more fully:
ENTER into God's presence;
ENGAGE in God's Word and Faith Practices that draw you into a closer relationship with Jesus;
be EQUIPPED for living life as Jesus would, in your skin, loving and serving God and neighbor;
EXTEND God's love and saving grace everywhere you go in Clarkston, White Lake, Pontiac, Detroit, and far beyond!
HOPE was, is,
and will be Born!!!
As we begin the time of year where we prepare for, anticipate, and await, let us remember that we highlight and celebrate many things during this pregnant holiday season. We, as Christians throughout December, are invited to embrace an entire month of celebration via the seasons of Advent and Christmas. It is meant to be a time of intentionality, where we contemplate that HOPE came to us in the form of a humble yet royal birth, that HOPE remains, and that HOPE will return triumphantly someday. It truly is a time of pregnant expectation.
So as we add things such as decorating, baking, and celebrations to our already busy lives, I pray that each and every day you will be interrupted by HOPE. Pray for, seek or look for those interruptions. God is waiting within that burnt cookie, that long line, that stack of unaddressed cards, that song that reminds you of an absent loved one, or whatever moment that grabs your heart, thoughts, breath, or attention. Come join me on Wednesdays in Advent (11/29, 12/6, 12/13, 12/20 at 10am or after midweek worship at about 7:30pm) to explore more deeply, broadly, and diversely how we can engage interruption. Together we will have an opportunity to ‘sit’ with some theologians, hear how they have explored interruptions, and how God is inviting us to HOPE moment by moment.
And then, as you encounter, tear up, smile at, and embrace that interruption, may this passage of HOPE send it ever deeper into your soul and allow you to more fully radiate God’s joy, peace, love, and HOPE out into a hurting world:
“May God, THE SOURCE OF HOPE, fill you with joy and peace through your faith in Him.” Romans 15:13 GW
Now go get ready to be interrupted!

L E A R N I N G W I T H I . P . K . I M P A C T W E E K E N D
Shalom! I found out what I had been needing all along. Some approval. That’s right just a little word! However, when attached to, for ordination into word and sacrament ministry in the ELCA - I’m finding it stirs the heart. I recently received approval for ordination by both the Candidacy Committee and Trinity Seminary. I am thankful and relieved for this good news! Look what happens when you trust in God.
This process of discernment, with all of you, has been a deep blessing. You are each a part of all this congregation does. From the smallest voice to the grandest actions, all of it is extremely important to God’s body in the world. You have influenced me as a faith led person. This became very evident as I wrote about my experiences this past 15 months. I am grateful.
The next phase of my journey will be completing a whole lot of forms, finishing my degree courses well, and then travelling through the assignment process of the ELCA church wide body. As I do all this I am blessed to continue serving Calvary and its ministries through next May. I find that Advent is one of the more beautiful Christian seasons, taking it all in can be overwhelming! However, remember scripture comes to our aid,
“For nothing
will be impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37 NRSV)
Interesting how Luke puts things into perspective so quickly! I hope and pray that you and I can continue to answer as Mary did in verse 38, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” (NRSV)

Thank you from Your Impact Weekend Team
Thank you to all 750 volunteers that worked on 56 different worksites and teams during Fall Community Impact Weekend. Thank God that most of the rain held off in what could only be described as perfect timing and that our volunteers were flexible and service focused for that particular challenge. Not one project was cancelled. We do continue to work on some projects that turned out to be bigger than the projected one weekend time frame. If you were unable to serve on that weekend and still want to get involved or did volunteer and want to do more, please let us know.
While this list can’t encompass all that was done, the various types of needs met included:
Low income families
Other non-profits serving God’s people in Wayne and Oakland Counties
Military service people
Local environmental concerns
Nursing facility residents
Local schools
Disaster victims
Disabled children
Food pantries
Resource centers for those in need
Human trafficking victims
Hospice patients
Local seniors
Free education programs
Those recovering from addictions
Gardens growing food for the hungry
A big THANK YOU to Jan Drews and her kids in the culinary program at Oakland Tech who made every lunch distributed.
And, of course, thanks to the planning team, photographers, lunch teams and others serving those who serve. Remember to mark April 28-29 for Spring Community Impact Weekend. If you have a project that you would like to lead, let us know so we can be sure you make the project list. Staff Contact: Deborah Robitaille

IMPACT Thoughts About Stewardship & Giving
Where did you serve on Community Impact Weekend last month? I served at Ferry Farms where I met and chatted with people more than I am able to on a typical Sunday. But some of the time I was alone because I was operating a leaf blower. It was at this time that my thoughts turned to stewardship (I am on the stewardship ministry team).
I thought of the Parable of the Talents found in Matthew 25:14-30 (note that the talents referred to here are a form of money in biblical times). This parable begins like this: “For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his servants and entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away."
What if I changed one word and read it as the Master gave one servant 10 strangers, another servant 5 strangers, and a third 1 stranger? What would the Master require of the servants then?
Now think of this in terms of Community Impact Weekend. How many strangers did you serve and what was required of you? Maybe there was some physical labor, or you poured your heart into a letter or a face to face conversation, or shared a skill you have so that a stranger could take comfort or joy from your work. Or maybe you became aware of an organization this year that you decided to make a monetary donation to. What did the Master require of you?
Now this is a question Pastor Jonathan asked us at the last meeting of stewardship ministry. Why do you give? He asked me first, so I stumbled a little bit until I found my thoughts. It begins with the lessons my foster mother taught me about having gratitude for all the Lord has provided and blessed me. So, tithing is what Ann and I do and I can say it is a habit. But it is more. The decision to do so is the accumulation of gratitude over the years.
During this past Community Impact Weekend and Thanksgiving season, I have come to realize that the accumulation of gratitude is the result of the
experience that throughout my life I have been 1 of those 10 strangers, or 1 of 5 strangers, or the one stranger that the Lord entrusted to his servants. And some of those servants of the Lord answered the question, "what does the Master require of me?" by generously investing and giving into my life - and that has made all the difference!
So "what does the Master require of you?" Please prayerfully consider this question as you make your response to our annual GIFT (Giving In Faith Together) emphasis and through your giving in 2018.
Rick Tyler Stewardship Ministry Team Leader
An Advent Message from Bishop Eaton
CHICAGO (ELCA) – In her Christmas message, the Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), said although the evidence of Christmas is all around, "We are also still in Advent."
"I want us to consider the deep and holy longing that is a part of this season," said Eaton. "It is significant that the words of the prophets and the yearning of Israel in exile are so prominent in the lessons appointed for this season. The people longed for the Lord to come, to act, to redeem them, to take them home. They lived in Babylon, but their hearts were not there.
"I think Advent is that way for us. As Lutherans, we do not withdraw from the world but engage it believing that it is a gift," she said. "But we also know that it is not quite right, that there is brokenness and pain – the pain we experience, the pain others cause, the pain we cause others." The bishop described the Advent longing as "an awareness that apart from God we are not whole." "In the incarnate Christ, God comes to us, finds us and gives our restless hearts rest," she said.
Reprinted from Bishop Eaton’s 2015 elca.org article.

Winter Gift Tree This year, the Calvary family is encouraged to donate to the Winter Gift Tree. Please pull a tag off the Christmas tree found in the Welcome Center at the Clarkston campus.
We will be collecting various gifts, hats, mittens, and boots throughout the winter to be distributed to the Micah 6 ministry in Pontiac. They will be operating a Christmas store for families from their Sprout location. Micah 6 is a partner ministry in Pontiac that provides assistance with food, gardens and community services. Their mission is to improve health and wellness for the community, help promote neighborhood stabilization and foster spiritual growth. Visit micah6community.com.
We will also be adopting families in our Calvary congregation in need this season. Their tags are also included on the tree. Please be sure to return the gift tag with your gift. Feel free to include gift wrapping with your item, but please leave the gift in its original packaging.
Place your unwrapped winter gift on or under the tree. Staff Contact: Pastor Ken.
Youth Faith Raiser Our Youth Ministry program is on the move this summer. The Faith Raiser Golf Outing will help raise funds for kids to attend mission trip and camp. Beginning in January, we will be accepting items and services for our silent auction. You do not have to golf to love this event, even though it is a golf outing. Please plan to join us for dinner and our auction anyway! We also need auction and outing volunteers.
Feeling a nudge to join the planning team for the June 9th Golf Outing Faith Raiser? Please submit an intouch card. Staff Contacts: Deborah Robitaille & Rebecca Couser.
Oakland Hope Oakland Hope’s mission is to bring the church and commerce together to serve the community. GIFT Weekend Coming Soon Giving in Faith Together
Saturday, December 2nd in White Lake and Sunday, December 3rd in Clarkston our congregation will be celebrating GIFT (Giving In Faith Together) Weekend. We urge you to plan now to attend two important events that weekend: 1) inspiring and hope-filled worship and 2) the "Thank You" reception including snacks and special coffee bar immediately following each of our four (4) worship celebrations.
Our 40-Day spiritual growth journey this Fall has been about being "Under Construction." We have focused on these themes: the vision, the blueprints, the foundation, the work zone, the real expansion, impact weekend and the purpose. The Vision: God's vision for our lives and our church, and our God-sized vision for Calvary's ministry. The Blueprints: focusing on Enter and re-Entering our personal relationship with Jesus Christ and others. The Foundation: focusing on Engage and re-Engaging in Faith Practices and staying fit as a follower of Jesus. The Work Zone: focusing on Equip and re-Equipping with our decisions to learn, grow and become more mature as Christians and to fulfill our purpose.. The Real Expansion: focusing on Extend and re-Extending by sharing the Good News and allowing Jesus to live through us to help others. Impact Weekend: being Jesus in the real world. And finally, the Purpose: why construction matters for us as individuals and for us as the Church.
See page 18 for some alternate giving ideas.
Look for your invitation in the mail followed by additional information from the Stewardship team, so you don’t miss it. GIFT Weekend is December 2nd at our White Lake campus and December 3rd at our Clarkston campus and will include a coffee bar and some yummy treats .

Pontiac Community Orchards Friendships grow. Trees grow. Weeds grow (unfortunately!). Our Pontiac Ministry team has also grown, but, as any small group, we have room for more involvement. Going into our fifth year shepherding the Pontiac Campus, comprised of three church properties -- hosting an orchard of over five dozen plum, pear, apple, and peach trees, as well as berries and vegetables, plus a fellowship space, we've got a great routine in place. No meetings. No procurement of supplies. Just show up and serve for two hours, or what you can offer between 10am and 12pm on the first or third Saturday from May to October. Here are just a few ways that we were "fed" this year while we served:
Neighbors: driving by with a wave, a toot of a horn or sometimes they stopped to say thanks for the beautiful addition to their community;
Promise: since she was a preschooler, 2nd grader Promise almost always comes to visit us and help. Sometimes she will even bring her younger cousins with her to get a book from the lending library;
Miracles: one day, a mum "appeared" below our Little Library as a thank you surprise;
Blessings: a couple taking a walk from three blocks north admired our heavily-laden peach trees and complimented us on them. We gladly told them to take some home. They were amazed and appreciative;
Rico: who is remodeling the two-story house next to the orchard, had a great chat with us and invited us to his Bible study;
Renee: who also lives next to the orchard, tended our vegetable garden all summer, taking tomatoes, peppers, and beans to our elderly neighbors;
Terry: who lives next to our fellowship lot, offered to help us with some maintenance on the playground retaining wall.
We are very truly better together. If you feel called to join us on Saturday mornings from May to October or if you are interested in stopping at another time on your own, our Pontiac Campus and the friends we have there will renew you with the Holy Spirit.

We Are the Church! Advocacy
Connecting faith and public life.
As members of the ELCA, we believe that we are freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. God uses our hands, through our direct service work and our voices, through our advocacy efforts, to restore and reconcile our world. Through faithful advocacy, the ELCA lives out our Lutheran belief that governments can help advance the common good.
ELCA advocacy works for change in public policy based on the experience of Lutheran ministries, programs and projects around the world and in communities across the United States. We work through political channels on behalf of the following biblical values: peacemaking, hospitality to strangers, care for creation, and concern for people living in poverty and struggling with hunger and disease.
Join a growing movement.
Together, we achieve things on a scale and scope that we could never do otherwise. When we act as a coordinated network of advocates and reach out to officials on relevant, timely issues, we effectively impact public policies.
Take action.
We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work. Stand up for policies that create opportunities to overcome poverty, promote peace and dignity, and defend God’s creation
Why is advocacy important?
Isn’t our direct service work enough? As the ELCA, we believe God is calling us into the world to serve together. Through our direct service, we aid immediate needs before us. Through our advocacy work, we impact systemic, long-lasting change.
Why does the ELCA understand advocacy to be part of its mission?
We are a church that is energized by lively engagement in our faith and public life. We serve in response to God’s love to meet human needs and protect creation. When we, as ELCA members, lift our voices together to influence policies that
advance the common good, we further God’s work in our world
How does the ELCA determine its advocacy priorities?
ELCA advocacy works for change in public policy based on the priorities framed by ELCA social policy and expressed by ELCA members. To be effective, advocacy draws directly from Lutheran ministries and projects around the world and in communities across the United States
Does the U.S. Constitution permit religious bodies to advocate?
Yes, it does. The advocacy of the ELCA and other religious bodies does not violate what is often referred to as “the separation of church and state.” The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees the exercise of religious freedom, including for the public witness of religious bodies. Based on our Lutheran tradition, our Church in Society social statement describes our church’s relationship with governments as one of “institutional separation and functional interaction.”

Visit the Advocacy Resources pages at ELCA.org. You’ll find information that will educate and equip you to be a more effective advocate.
Excerpt from the ELCA.org website
Can we talk...?
“Many of us yearn for help in figuring out how God and our faith relate to the issues we encounter in our lives and society. As a church we confess that God is deeply involved in our lives and world, but figuring out how and what that means in relation to the specific issues and questions we face is often difficult. People in many congregations seem reluctant to talk together about such questions, especially if this will open up real differences among them.” (Excerpt from Talking Together, ELCA.org)
Mat Rainoldi, Rebecca Couser and Pastor Ken are working on developing a Justice and Advocacy focused team. Formed from within Calvary we will look at and think about profound issues that we

Surviving Holiday Stress: The Mindfulness of God
When I look at the heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and the stars which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him?” Psalm 8: 3-4 During the holidays, we are bombarded by images of people who are happy, in love and enjoying the whirlwind of their lives. In reality, this time of year can be difficult. When our lives don’t match the images we see or live up to our own ideals of family and friendship, it can be painful. Here are some tips to help decrease your stress and increase your focus on the mind of Christ. 1. Find meaning in the season. Remember that
Jesus is the Reason for the Season. Think about God’s people celebrating the coming of the Light of Christ through the centuries of spiritual darkness. Imagine Martin Luther putting candles on an evergreen tree for the first time. Light a candle. Give to someone in need, do volunteer work, or do a surprising, thoughtful thing.
2. Anticipate obstacles to your sense of well-being. Take a few moments to recall circumstances that have intensified your stress in past years (maybe a sense of being lonely, or overscheduled, or a particular family gathering that was painful.) Plan ahead to offset that emotion. Pray.
3. Do only one thing in the moment. Focusing all of your attention on what you are doing right now, can help you settle down in the midst of a frantic or chaotic day or week. Let go of the mental list-making, worrying, and party planning. Put your mind in the present and focus on the simple task at hand-washing dishes, folding laundry, listening to music, or decorating. (“It was evening and it was morning…the first day…”)
4. Set a timer on your feelings, then switch gears. If you find yourself wallowing in sadness, regrets or other painful emotions set a timer and allow yourself 30 minutes to feel those feelings. Listen to quiet, reflective
instrumental Christmas music. Pray. Then consciously “put those feelings in a box” and set it aside for awhile. Put on some lively music, dance around the house, and “pretend” you are feeling wonderful! Watch a favorite old Christmas movie. Or a funny movie and consciously laugh out loud. Act with kindness and compassion toward those people who irritate you. Pray.
5. Schedule a few memorable activities. Research indicates that mental outlook improves with people type activities and relat ionships, rather than material possessions. Reconnect with a childhood tradition or make a new one. Invite a small child to decorate cookies with you. Then take them to a lonely neighbor.
6. Limit alcohol and caffeine. Drink plenty of water to keep your mind clear. Eat a healthy breakfast, including fresh fruit. Take a brisk walk in the neighborhood - or shovel snow.
7. Clean the house. The holidays often bring extra chores and cleaning. View this as an opportunity to self-soothe, rather than as an additional stress. Divide your work into stages: straightening things and putting them away, then scrubbing and cleaning. Allow a good length of time for each task. Move slowly (three times more slowly than usual) and focus your attention fully on each task. Maintain awareness of your actions and your thoughts if they wander. Pray and sing. Count the stars.

face in the world. We will continue to look at how we can integrate our congregation and issues facing the world. This section in the monthly newsletter will initially give you ideas to consider and resources to explore.
Over the next few months, the Justice Team will be exploring some exciting initiatives that we, as a church, can engage in order to have helpful, healthy conversations about justice and advocacy issues. Please continue to read through this section each month to find out information on how you can become a part of Calvary’s voice in our communities and beyond into the world. Please speak with Pastor Ken, Rebecca or Mat about getting involved or finding out more about the team!.
Publicly Engaged Church.
We are a publicly engaged church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work. We do God’s work in the world, the work of restoring and reconciling communities. We pursue justice and seek peace no matter how long the journey or wide the chasm. Because we are grounded in God’s love and forgiveness, we are well equipped to live and serve here and now, in the world, with all its complexities, tensions and ambiguities.
There is no aspect of life in which God is not active, no place where God is not present. And this is exactly where we are called to participate in God’s work, in the thick of life, embracing individuals, families and communities that are hungry for hope and healing, justice and peace, advocates and partners.
Our faith and our call to boldly serve and love our neighbor take us into some interesting and challenging aspects of life: advocacy, corporate social responsibility, racial justice, science and ethics, peacemaking, justice for women, social issues, and community organizing. We are drawn into every corner of life, society and its institutions to bring the good news of Jesus Christ and to work for lasting, positive change that upholds human dignity. You have a place in the ELCA and an important role in God’s work in the world.
