-Move For Hunger 2014-
YEAR IN REVIEW
Greetings from New Jersey!
Can you believe how fast five years have flown!? I feel like it was just yesterday that I was scribbling on a legal pad in my dad’s office planning the beginnings of what would later become Move For Hunger. I want to start the year off with a huge thank you to our incredible team, amazing board of directors, generous donors, enthusiastic volunteers, committed partners, and the countless media outlets and organizations that have helped shine a spotlight on our mission to reduce food waste and alleviate hunger. Most of all, I want to thank our tireless network of moving companies, realtors, corporate housing professionals, and relocation companies who go out every day and transform moving into an opportunity to help those in need. THANK YOU!
The issues of food waste and hunger are only growing. As a nation – we can do better. We must continue to innovate, collaborate, and urge people to create a more sustainable way to reduce food waste and help those who are hungry. We must work harder to challenge our elected officials to take action while encouraging businesses and consumers to change they way they do business to create greater social impact. We must scale the most effective solutions to benefit more communities and individuals. And while the road may be long, I am confident that these problems can be solved. 2014 was a record year for Move For Hunger. I am proud to report that we delivered nearly 1.8 MILLION POUNDS of food to food banks and pantries across N. America. This is enough to provide over 1.5 million meals to individuals in need. With new programs, partners, team members, and technology, Move For Hunger is in an incredible position to grow in 2015. In the following paragraphs you can find some of my favorite the highlights of 2014:
You Got Involved – In 2013, we organized 300 food drives. Last year over 400 of you took action and organized an event. Together we organized food drives, fundraisers, and advocacy events, and even our first annual Truck Pull! For anyone who organized an event with us last year – you freaking rock!
Keep On Moving– Our network now includes over 600 moving companies, tens of thousands of realtors, some of the world’s largest relocation companies, and a brand new corporate housing program. For those moving, our website serves as an invaluable resource to find socially responsible moving companies to hire for your relocation needs. Together we are transforming the relocation process and creating an opportunity to reduce food waste andfeed the hungry.
Running Full Speed Ahead– We launched our Race Team to give all you endurance runners out there a chance to turn your miles into meals while fundraising for a great cause! This year, you raised nearly $40,000 for the cause! If you haven’t already, check out our website for opportunities to donate, relocate, and advocate to reduce food waste and help the hungry.
While we are excited by the accomplishments of 2014, we know there is still a ton we have yet to accomplish. 2015 will be a year of collaboration. A year of awareness. Obviously it will be a year of fun – but most of all a year of impact! Please join us this year. Make a donation. Hold a food drive. Advocate. Get involved! 50 million Americans will go to bed hungry tonight.
How will you help us make a difference?
Sincerely,

Move For Hunger’s Real Estate Program kicked-off its awesome impact throughout New Jersey. Over 30 different offices competed to collect 500 pounds of non perishable food and $500 dollars to support hunger relief in the Garden State. It was an incredible achievement as the realtors were able to educate their clients and provide strong support!
Fall Food FightMergenthaler Moving & Storage took Montana by storm by hosting a Fill-A-Truck event with each of their offices throughout November! From their group effort, they bolstered excitement with radio posts and even promoted Move For Hunger on the local news! They filled 4 trucks with donated food and were able to collect over 15,000 pounds of food to support families during the holiday season!
State-Wide Fill-A-Trucks
From coast to coast, 2014 has resulted in events with small companies and major corporations! All Service Moving and Nike Corporate in Oregon worked together to create a successful Move For Hunger event. With collection boxes placed throughout the 213 acre Nike campus, we generated enough food donations for over 900 meals for individuals in need!
We Just ‘Did it’Every May, the National Association of Letter Carriers’ (NALC) hosts a gigantic nationwide food drive. All across the United States letter carriers collect non perishable food items from the homes to bolster the food supply of our nation’s food banks that often dwindles during the summer months.
Stamp Out Hunger
This year 19 movers in our network teamed up with their local post office and the food bank to help transport the donations from the collection area to the food bank. Together they delivered 466,450 lbs. of food, and saved each food bank from paying for trucks and fuel on the day of the drive.
Ever pull a truck to help fight hunger? Move For Hunger’s inaugural Jersey Shore Truck Pull in September had teams of 10 come out in force to compete to see who could pull a moving truck the fastest, all in the name of hunger relief!
Over two hundred participants and spectators lined the area and not only had a great time, but became more aware of the hunger that exists within their community while having a chance to donate to the cause.
Move For Hunger Truck Pull
Location. Location. Donation.2014 was an incredible year for the Move For Hunger Real Estate Program. Realtors from all over the country came together all in the name of hunger relief.
In 2014, the real estate program more than doubled from 2013. We now have thousands of Realtors educating their clients about local hunger needs, fundraising and holding food drives throughout their communities.
With so much positive engagement and feedback from our office partners, we were able to collect more than 106,000 pounds of food, which is enough to provide over 88,667 life saving meals. We developed partnerships with the top three largest real estate associations - California Association of Realtors, Illinois Association of Realtors and the Miami Association of Realtors.
I am thrilled to announce that the new year brings new partners and new educational materials for the real estate program. As the real estate industry continues to adopt the Move For Hunger program, the impact grows.
Thank you all again for your support in bringing the real estate program to life. With your help, we are truly making a difference one move at a time.
Very Best,
Max LowyReal Estate Program Director
