Proprietary Software licenses

• The hallmark here is that the software publisher grants the use of one or more copies of software under the end-user license agreement (EULA), but ownership of those copies remains with the software publisher

• As I know, MSTS are not proprietary – only logo of MSTS does

• We have to write EULAs, where should be determined the uses of software such as a number of installations allowed of the terms of distribution

• License should contain extensive list of activities which are restricted, such as: reverse engineering, simultaneous use of the software by multiple users, and publication of benchmarks or performance tests

Licensing models

Contractual License Program(CLP)- customer commits to purchase a certain amount of licenses over a fixed period

Open License Program(OLP), Transactional License Program(TLP), Volume License Program(VLP)- per single user (named user, client, node) or per user in the appropriate volume discount level

Licensing per concurrent/floating user, where all users in a network have access to the program, but only a specific number at the same time

licensing per dongle which allows the owner of the dongle to use the program on any computer

Licensing per server, CPU or points, regardless the number of users, is common practice as well

Licensing models

Company can choose between perpetual and annual license

Perpetual:- 1year of maintenance is often required- maintenance (subscription) renewals

discounted

Annual:- there is no Renewal – new license must be

purchased after expiration

Maintenance

• Usually with a term of one year, is either included or optional, but must often be bought with the software

• Maintenance contract contains • Minor Update (v.1.1 – v1.2)

• Sometimes Major Update (v1.2 – v2.0)

• For Major Update customer has to buy an Upgrade (if not included in Maintenance)

• Maintenance normally doesn't include technical support.

• Technical Support can differentiate between • Email and telephone support

• Availability (8x5 or 24X7 or fixed hours)

• Reaction Time (3h)

This provided above is commonly named Gold, Silver and Bronze SupportMaintenance normally doesn't include technical support

• Support is also licensed per incident as Incident Pack (e.g. five support incidents per year)

• Solarwinds:• licensed products include a year of maintenance from the date of purchase

• Provides perpetual licensing. Elements – amount of objects under monitoring

• IBM Qradar:• Each license has a value to eps, flows, log source limits etc, however some may be 0

depending on the appliance type it is being purchase/applied to. All values are defined in 1 license key file per appliance.

• Different prices on different license types for the same product:• Indefinite use of software - "License + SW Subscription and Support 12 Months“

• Fixed Term license of software - "Initial Fixed Term License + SW Subscription and Support“

• Also they have options as• User based licensing (authorized user; concurrent user, floating user, user value unit)

• Capacity based licensing (amount of install, Processor Value Unit, Server, Virtual Server)

• Other licensing

What is our competitors are doing?

IBM Qradar have more than 100 variants of prices according to various licensing and software types. But as I understood it have to be also amount of appliance (more info we can get only from IBM sales dept)

What is our competitors are doing?

• Nagios - #1 by popularity free (I thought before) product. It is free to download and install for any capability, but they are making money on:• Implementation costs some (didn’t found, needed to ask sales person)• QuickStart Installation Services – 250$• Nagios XI support ranges from 1995$ to 4995$. Nagios Core support starts from 2495$• Nagios selling training materials -199$ per year• Live Trainings (webinar) – 1495$ per student (frequency – 2 times/month)

Nagios in website for example is not free!

Probably only RU-speaking society hacking it!

• Nagios have hundreds various products! Most of them are paid!

Zabbix is also known as free toolZABBIX software is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2.

And it seems to be really free to use – we can download from official web-site (unlike Nagios)

MSTS licensing type, finally?

• According to amount of hosts + exact price for implementation/support:• Less then 200 – 35$• In range then 200<500 hosts – 50$ per host• More then 500 hosts – discounting (45$ if 501-1000, 40$ if 1001-∞)

• Implementation: 31$ per worker/hour

Maintenance

• Support: • Bronze – 10 accidents (through e-mail/phone 8x5) - email• Silver – 50 accidents (through e-mail/phone 8x5) -• Gold – unlimited accidents (through e-mail/phone 24x7)

Finally, let’s decide we’ll use perpetual (sell MSTS forever, only asking about purchasing support?)annual (sell MSTS each year, but price rankings, probably should be reviewed)
