Senior Class Gift 2019 Winner

With over 600 votes, UCSB First is

thrilled to announce that the class of 2019

has chosen the Edible

Campus Initiative as the winner of

their Senior Class Gift! All around UC

Santa Barbara, you can see the impact of

Edible Campus in repurposed spaces for

sustainable food production, in efforts to

turn waste into food, and in engaged

student growers and producers. Forty

percent of UC students experience food

insecurity, which the Edible Campus

initiative aims to address locally while

promoting sustainability as a whole

within food systems.

For National Philanthropy Day, we had

three different tabling stations that

handed out slices of pizza, Yerba Mates,

and churros. To make students

engaged, we made our tabling booths

interactive; to be able to receive the

food or beverage, students had to post

and tag UCSB First in an Instagram post

and participate in other interactive

activities. We are so pleased with the

success  and turnout of this year’s

National Philanthropy Day, and we are

eager to see what next year holds for

this special holiday that we all love so

much.

National Philanthropy Day is a special

holiday that is dedicated to the

celebration of giving and of all the

individuals who contribute to the vast

philanthropic community. This holiday

was first recognized in 1986 after

President Reagan signed the official

National Philanthropy Day proclamation,

and it has recognized the “love of

humankind” every year since. UCSB First

was happy to partake in the celebration of

this special day on Wednesday, November

15th, with our second ever National

Philanthropy Day event at the SRB, Arbor

and UCen. This event focused not only on

recognizing various philanthropic

student-run organizations across campus,

but also on sincerely thanking all of our

selfless alumni and donors who

contribute to the UCSB community!

This year marked UCSB First's second

ever Thank-a-thon, an event in which the

Annual Fund and UCSB First collaborate

to show our appreciation for

generous donors and alumni that

contribute to making our student

experience so wonderful. Annual Fund

callers walked into their office to find it

decorated with balloons, snacks. and

thankful messages. Instead of calling and

asking for donations, the callers called

new donors and thanked them for their

contributions to UCSB. The other callers

followed their regular calling routines,

and for every donation they received,

they wrote something about UCSB that

they are grateful for on a heart and

posted it on a banner.

Thank-a-thon is such a great

opportunity to show how much

gratitude we have for our donors and

their continuous support!
