GENERAL MEETING NOTES March 1, 2014

(These notes are provided as an overview of the business conducted during the general meeting. Please read the official minutes for details.) Marc 1, 2014 Meeting Location: Spaghetti Factory Restaurant, Duarte, CA President Linda Sanchez called the meeting to order. Recording Secretary's Report: (Ted Miyamura) The minutes for the January 11, 2014 meeting were read and approved. President’s Report– (Linda Sanchez): Thank’s to everyone who came to the Grooming Seminar. It was a wonderful weekend of learning and camaraderie. In post seminar conversations with presenters Marianne Melucci and Barbara Casey, they stated that they were very happy and proud with the response and attention they experienced at the seminar. Thanks to Jacki Forkel and Sueannette for helping the presenters during the work sessions; Hilda Miyamura for cookies and Vicky Taylor for coordinating 2 days of continental breakfasts and lunches.

Desert Empire Terrier Club sent money for our supported entry in their January show. Corresponding Secretary’s Report (Cheryl Schaeffer)– No report. Treasurer’s Report – (Pat Bolen): The bi-monthly report was presented and filed. Requests for reimbursements were presented and approved. Committees: Breeder Referral () Puppy referral requests have been slow. The Bulletin – (Ted Miyamura): The activity is within the budget. Status and expense report submitted. Education – (Adrian Sanchez): The feedback on the grooming seminar was very positive with many indicating a desire for another. Darle Heck has been approached about doing a seminar about Scotties Legislation - (Jerry Ford) At their January meeting, the Pasadena City Council tabled any action on Mandatory Spay/Neuter until July. The Pasadena Humane Soctiey is expected to present the results of their door-to-door survey of Pasadena households at that time. He submitted a summary of local and national legislative activity. Notably, clubs and other interested parties in New

York are challenging the recently passed USDA/APHIS rule in court. Linda Sanchez commented that she had been contacted by a Carolyn Howard looking for information on club members, not necessarily the club. (Ed.Note: Several other specialty and all breed clubs across the country have stated that a Carolyn Howard had been contacting the officers looking for information on its members. No association was identified for this person; although it is guessed that she is working for the USDA trying to identify breeders.) Pet Expo (Sherry Swickard for Sylvia Moody) The dates for Pet Expo are April 25 thru April 27. Puppy Match (Ted Miyamura) The majority of the assignments have been made. Now the last minute details/preparation are being worked.

There was a discussion on the exclusion of “major pointed” puppies. An “Exhibit Only” class was suggested that would allow major pointed puppies to “exhibit” during the match. The “major pointed” restriction was established by a vote by the general membership. It would take another vote to change this rule. Ways & Means (Sherry Swickard) She hopes that everyone comes to Cal-Scots. She also indicated that shirts with the specialty logo were being ordered for the specialty. Specialty Show 2014 (Linda Sanchez) Everything is moving right along.

Candi Serrano is providing a photograph of Mike Serrano for his memorial.

The deadlines for Trophy Donations and Catalog Advertising are April 27 and May 6, respectively.

Food and Drink - Lunches (3 days) menus. Price at $10 per meal. Serve lemonade, ice tea and water. (Not going to offer Cokes or other sodas.)

An information packet was given to the Bulletin for publication.

Paul LaFontaine distributed information on the specialty catalog advertising. This year there is one catalog for all three days of the weekend shows.

Paul LaFontaine will handle requests for grooming and other equipment for out-of town exhibiters.

The club will donate $250 to the STCA for their rotating trophy fund. Membership No new applications. UNFINISHED BUSINESS VHS/Film DVD Conversion - Paul LaFontaine delivered 2 sets of DVD copies of the films and VHS cassettes on past specialties. The specialties were from 1950 to 1988. There was money (~$230.00) left over from the club approved expenditure and the club voted to buy a digital camera to be used for recording club functions. NEW BUSINESS The names of the nominees for the 2014-2015 officers and board were presented. No nominees were named from the floor. Meeting adjourned.

CANINE REPRODUCTION

101 On Saturday, March 1, I had one of the best educational experiences as a breeder I’ve ever had. My Vet let me know about a seminar that was taking place at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine for Breeders and pet owners. It was the first annual Theriogenology Club Symposium: Canine Reproduction 101 with presentations given by the professors at the Veterinary School. It came at a very opportune time, and I signed up immediately. $55.00 covered the cost of the seminar, breakfast and lunch. As luck would have it I couldn’t get over the mountains to Davis because of a snow storm, but I was able to attend via webinar! Registration fee for the webinar was $45! All materials were e-mail to me, and I settled in on Saturday morning at my computer for a fantastic learning experience. I was able to see all the exhibits, hear the lectures, and the questions that were asked by the attendees. Those of us attending by webinar were also able to submit questions. The topics discussed and presented were:

Ovulation Timing Physiology: the ‘Why’ Behind the ‘How’

Managing the Male Dog and Semen Evaluation

Canine Brucellosis and Herpesvirus Testing for Canine Genetic Diseases Neonatal Care Transcervical versus surgical

insemination Planned C-Section

If anyone would like to have a copy of the materials I received I will be happy to send copies. You’re welcome to request copies to me at my e-mail, [email protected]. The response was very positive so the 2nd annual symposium will be held next year. When I get the information I will let everyone know. It was truly a great educational experience. Elizabeth Wise

program, breeders will be able to maintain retired intact females or grow out young females without fear of triggering federal licensing requirements. In each instance, USDA APHIS is directed to prepare specific regulations that further address these issues. Federal/Congress — H.R. 2066 / S.1710 ) (“Pets on Trains Act of 2013”) — These bills, supported by AKC GR, would require Amtrak, when feasible, to designate at least one car where passengers may transport a dog or cat if the pet is in a kennel that can be stowed according to Amtrak's requirements for carry-on baggage. Passengers could transport dogs or cats as cargo if the pets are in a kennel, the cargo area is temperature controlled, and the passenger is travelling less than 750 miles. Passengers would be required to pay a fee to transport their pets on trains. H.R. 2066 is pending in the House Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, & Hazardous Materials. S.1710 is pending in the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation.

Dear STCC Members, Sorry this thank you is so

late...We have both been exhibiting and grooming dogs in our areas. We wanted to sincerely thank you for hosting the two day judging/grooming seminar in February. Everything was perfect: the venue, food and the participants! Your dedication to asking relevant questions and working on your individual dogs for five to six hours a day was inspiring. Thank you for your time and talent. Our appreciation goes to all the workers that made the seminar a success.

We hope you all made great memories and went away with grooming tips to add to your repertoire. Barbara and Marianne

April 2014 Page 13 THE BULLETIN 2013/2014 No. 8

This has been a very busy month of driving with Scotties coming in from and being adopted to far flung locations. Our furthest away Scottie, little two-year-old Gigi, came to us from Cottonwood, Arizona. We picked her up in Palm Springs from her seriously ill mom and dad who were broken hearted to have to give her up. They have been Scottie lovers and owners since the 1970's. "Gigi loves people but she really doesn't like our neighbor's Chihuahuas and barks at them aggressively all the time," her mom lamented. Gigi now lives in the Antelope Valley with her new mom, a high school principal who will soon be retiring. Her new home has block wall fencing so there will be no fence-fighting with the neighbors' dogs. We suggested an obedience class and/or a trainer to help Gigi overcome what seems to be a fear-based barking at other dogs issue. She is a young Scottie and we would like to see her become more dog social, we told her new mom. This is our fourth adoption to this home, mom being a long-time Scottie aficionado. Vader, as in Darth, lost his West Los Angeles home, due to an expanding family. His former owner bought him four years ago in a Century City pet store as a single working lady living in an apartment. Now, “...We have a 13-month-old son who has just begun to walk and another baby due in a few m o n t h s . . . " "We have no time for Vader now and he is a very high energy dog," the husband wrote. "We have a dog walker who walks him three hours a day five days a week." When we receive a Scottie who we know has had dog companionship his whole life, we will find him a home that has another dog. With animal shelter Scotties, of course, we don't know their background,

and to take a basic obedience class. We went exactly two days with no rescued Scotties here, then the phone rang and a San Diego boarding kennel told us of a Scottie they'd had boarded since last June. Last summer that we'd taken in a Scottie family consisting of mom, dad, and two five month old puppies. Goalie and his dad were going to be kept by their senior owner as her favorites. His owner went into an assisted living facility. Goalie, short for Goliath, and his 16-year-old dad, were both sent to the boarding kennel and it had become apparent to the daughter that her mother would not be able to ever return home and reclaim them. When I heard the name Goalie, and that he was a Scottie mix, I realized this was the same situation. As I started explaining to the kennel owner that we were unable to take mixes she said he was 3/4ths Scottie, with his mother being a purebred and his dad being 1/2 Scottie and ½ Japanese Chin. She went on to say, "...the daughter had requested that both father and son be euthanized. Our mobile vet would not put Goalie down when he saw that he was only four years old." I told her that I had rescued the rest of this Scottie family and had agreed last June to also take Goalie if he ever needed rehoming. I picked Goalie up the day she called me. Special THANK YOUS this month go to Diana and Will Jones in memory of our little wheaten rescue, Libby; Michele and Don Parmiter, honoring CH PJ's Scot Flying Under the Radar, "the marvelous champion owned by Phil and Judy DiGirolamo"; and Michele Wojtalewicz. but with owner surrendered Scotties we go over their past lives in detail with their surrendering owners and try to match and/or better their next home. Vader now lives in Palm Springs and has two new brothers, a 16-year-old Westie and a four-year-old wheaten Scottie, who was adopted from us three years ago. "Calvin (Westie) immediately took to Vader," his new dad told me, "but Spencer isn't quite sure he's happy with Vader. I think they will work out their pecking order just fine," he added. "Spencer usually loves all other dogs," he said. Our beautiful pair, Duke and Sophie, were adopted three weeks ago to a great home in the foothills of San Bernardino. They had been here about six weeks, waiting for the family who could adopt a pair. T h e i r new home looks out over a b e a u t i f u l landscape that goes on forever. Of course, they are now in that area where the bears keep coming down from the higher mountains and usually end of on the 5 o'clock news, as they are tracked by news helicopters. Duke and Sophie lived their first four years as totally outside Scotties, seemingly being bought as puppy machines, we think. Their first family lost their home to foreclosure and were moving to Texas for a new start and couldn't take them, they told us. Their house manners improved greatly while they were here and "they have not had a single accident," bragged their new mom in a recent call. Duke is is the strongest Scottie that I've had, bar none, and their daily walks were pretty challenging for me. If they saw another dog I had to plant myself against the nearest, building, car, or whatever and hang on for dear life until the passing dog got out of sight. I walked them very early in the morning to try and minimize dog encounters. I strongly emphasized to their new family that they should walk them as a couple, or only one at a time, to be safe ...
