AUTUMN TRADITIONS
IN POLAND
Many traditions in our country have been popular for ages and
many people keep going to celebrate them.
We want to show you some of them to bring closer our culture, habists
and life style…
OCTOBER Rosary
The most popular tradition in October is a special prayer to the Virgin Mary which is called rosary. We take our rosaries and go to church to pray with other people for health, happiness and whatever we want. The Virgin Mary’s month is a good time to think about our changes.
14th OCTOBER Day of National Education
It’s a Polish national holiday of education and higher education. That day is celebrated in institutions related to education. It is also an opportunity to reward outstanding teachers and school employees.
16th OCTOBERDay of Pope John Paul II
Polish National holiday, celebrated every year, established in honor of the Pope-Pole John Paul II.
John Paul II reigned as Pope of the Catholic Church from 1978 until his death 2 April 2005 in Vatican City. He was the second-longest serving Pope in history and the first non-Italian since 1523.
1st NOVEMBERAll Saint’s Day
In Poland it is an off-day, what cause that many people travel, even great distances, to visit the graves of their beloved ones. People visit cemeteries to decorate graves with flowers. They light candles and pray. It is an expression of memory, honor and respect to the dead.
11th NovemberIndependence Day
It is a national holiday when all patriots enjoy Poland’s assumption of independent statehood in 1918, after 123 years of partitions.
29th NOVEMBER St. Andrew’s Day
A fortune telling evening, celebrated on the night of 29th to 30th November, on the eve of St. Andrew, the saint patron of Scotland, Greece and Russia.In the beginning, the holiday of St. Andrew’s was treated very seriously and foretelling the future was held only individually.
4th December Miners Day
Traditional Polish feast celebrated in the name day of St. Barbara, the saint patron of miners.In the tradition mining Barbórka morning begins with a solemn Mass in church.
DECEMBERAdvent
It is time for the spiritual preparation for the birth of Christ, celebrated in all Polish Christian churches with the early morning Mass, called the „Roraty”.“Roraty” starts early in the morning in complete darkness to show readiness for Christ’s coming. It starts four Sundays before Christmas and is connected with fasting and mourning.
6th DECEMBER St. Nicholas Day
December 6th is St. Nicholas Day, and Mikolaj places gifts under children's pillows. Alternatively, Mikolaj visits in person, either dressed in elegant bishop's clothing or in the merry red winter suit typical to the Western Santa Claus. Sometimes, gifts are accompanied by a switch to remind children to be good. Mikolaj may make an additional appearance on Christmas Eve.
The presentation entitled:„National values reflected through autumn customs and traditions” was done during the workshops conducted in our school.
During the workshop the photographs were choosen for the presetations and were also disployed in the school hall. The participants with the English teacher support have translated the text ie discriptions of customs and traditions and have created this presentation.
Students improved their knowledge about traditions and customs, they learned how to cultivate own traditions and what should be done to keep them alive.
