• Focused approach will deal with key areas of NGN functionality

Accelerate industry implementations of NGN’s around the globe

• Enable more efficient, cost effective integration of NGN’s

• Assist in the delivery of more stable, robust, standards-based NGN’s

• Prove conformance to MSF NGN IA’s and specifications

• Aid Service Providers in the selection of multi-vendor NGN solutions

RTCP Certification

• RTP Control Protocol

• Used to allow end to end measurement of the delay, jitter

and packet loss experienced by a given media stream.

• Many other measurements are also supported in RTCP XR

(Extended reports) and the emerging RTCP HR standard.

• The MSF is certifying the operation of the protocol AND

critically the accuracy of the results reported by the

systems using the protocol.

• For example if a network has a known 5% packet loss the

system must report 5% packet loss to pass.

What is RTCP used for in an NGN?

• Gateways and end systems record call statistics

– Passing them up to a call agent or other control plane entity.

• Two major uses for RTCP statistics

– Placement of raw statistics into call billing records to aid

dealing with customer complaint or an inter-operator dispute

– Real time analysis to identify faults in the network that are

otherwise masked.

• Problems that RTCP might help identify

– Occasional delay and jitter caused by short duration peaks in

high priority traffic

Why Certify?

• RTCP operates between end systems. Many many RTP end points exist from many vendors, e.g. media gateways, IP phones.

• Because systems may be on the other side of the world and in different networks a gateway or IP phone may have to interwork with lots of other systems. It isn’t possible to predict which systems in advance of a call setup.

• In chasing down network problems operators must be able to trust each others statistics as expensive investigations may be launched based on these statistics. Customers and operators may be compensated for failures.

• Certification is the only way that this can be achieved without continual expensive testing. The large number of systems involved and the lack of control as to which systems will be connected means interoperability doesn’t scale well in this case.

The MSF value add

• The MSF is a trusted third party that is providing rigorous certification of RTCP protocol and statistics accuracy.

• If a network element has its RTCP implementation certified by the MSF all parties (operators and vendors) know that the results can be trusted.

• The MSF certification programme is provided by a neutral lab.

• The MSF is providing the governance necessary to support the certification program through its certification committee.

• With this certification program the MSF is providing operators with the guarantees of accurate performance measurement that they need to underpin their network operation.

Conformance Test Objectives

• RTCP Conformance Test Objectives• Confirm that RTCP counts are sent and received correctly and the

information recorded by the gateway is correct. • Confirm that statistics can be reset correctly for complex call scenarios.

• Call Scenarios• Point to point call scenarios: • Initiate a call between the SUT and the emulated endpoint and verify that

basic RTCP jitter, delay, packet loss, packet duplication and short calls are reported correctly by the end systems.

• Complex call scenarios:• Verify that a mixer maintains the correct RTCP statistics for each RTP

sessions it supports.• When a destination endpoint is changed, verify that the end-point clears

the statistics for the old media path and reports the statistics accurately for the new media path.
