Two groups of 12 trainees each, from Saudi Electric Company (SEC)
visited Qurrayah CPP Power Plant as part of the on-the-job training.
The first group visited the site on August 2 and 3, 2016 and the 2nd
group visited on August 30 and 31, 2016.
Fahad Al-Hajri from the Technical Training Division (TOD) and
Engineering Instructor; Mesbah Elamin coordinated the site visit with
SEC; namely to give the trainees a first hand view of their actual
workplace environment.
SEC personnel represented by Eng. Hamdi, Eng. Ehab, and onsite
engineers were so cooperative. They availed NITI trainees the
opportunity to have a live experience on how “Power Plant”
functions.

An on-the-job learning
experience is an experience
in which a person spends
time at a workplace
learning about and
participating in the job tasks
of employees at that
workplace.
This is one of the best ways
for a person to learn new
skills and gain valuable
experience.

Why has NITI decided to adopt the NEC?
Since its inauguration, NITI has been working together with the clients and
stakeholders, to meet the growing demands in training & development, and there
were repeated claims that graduates have lacked the language skills required to
cope with job-skills training and the work. We think our decision with introduction
of NEC will provide a more meaningful and job-related language experience.
How do you think the trainees will respond to the NEC?
It’s important to note that if a trainee’s motivation is purely instrumental, i.e. he
needs to pass English to get a job, then there’s a good chance he won’t be
motivated to really integrate and learn the language. With the NEC, there will be
less emphasis on passing a test; more attention will be paid to continuous
assessment and job-related communication, so we think the response is positive.
What are the challenges facing NITI as a result of taking on the NEC?
NITI’s effectiveness will be primarily measured by its ability to adapt to methods of
practice, performance, and assessment.
In line with its vision and mission, NITI has decided to move into the next
phase and adopt a Smart Learning environment (SLE) by implementing Saudi
Aramco’s New English Curriculum (NEC) from October 30, 2016 to coincide
with the new major intake. The new program is not only technology oriented
but also English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in nature addressing the different
job tracks. The technology content is about 80% in-house material and 20% off
-the-shelf.
With the new program, all classrooms will be equipped with the required
technology, and trainees will be provided with iPads and Wi-Fi connectivity.
The teachers were provided the training prior to the start of the program.

& Training Resources Unit
“NITI is in the process
of developing an
identity which requires

specific experience”
NITI English Curriculum enters a New Phase
The implementation of this new program will herald a new mode of
teaching and learning through the integration of technology into the
teaching learning process. It will engage and enable the learning en-
vironment where the learners will be at the center of the teaching-
learning process, allowing them to develop their full potential. They
will feel independent and motivated to develop their analytic and
leadership skills.

Academic Programs

The training was conducted by experts from Apple Arabia. The
experience gained was cascaded to the rest of the teachers by the Lead
Teachers who attended the training.

Three Workshops on WebAssign were attended by NITI Math Teachers from August
29 to 31, 2016. Teachers created assignments and quizzes online and electronically
transmit them to their class. Students enter their answers online, and WebAssign
grades and give instant feedback on their performance.
In the workshop, the Math teachers agreed that the pacing schedule in M5T should
be updated by providing a slot for WebAssign activities. Besides, the teachers
suggested to have 2 periods in M5T once the trainees start at Level E5A (November
14, 2016 - January 23, 2017) to compensate the classroom activities on WebAssign
and Module requirements.

that excited participating trainees and generated lively discussions among all. Presenters asked question right
after the end of their presentations rewarding trainees who gave correct answers by token gifts and applauds
from the audience. NITI is looking forward to conduct more of such campaigns, as part of the initiatives
