Scientific Method
Independent Variable (IV): The part of the experiment that you are changing in order to test your hypothesis.
Dependent Variable (DV): The part of the experiment that we are measuring (that is DEPENDENT on the other variable)
Controls: Anything in the experiment that we do not change. We keep it constant for the purpose of the experiment.
Identifying Variables and Controls
A hypothesis “If (independent variable), then (dependent
variable).”
Here is an example of a hypothesis: If the temperature of sea water increases,
then the amount of salt that dissolves in the water increases.
Form a Testable hypothesis:
Independent Variable: Temperature of Water Dependent Variable: Egg Cook Time Control: 1Tbsp salt is added to the water at
each temperature
Hypothesis: If the water temperature is higher then the eggs will cook faster.
Example: Observation: On some days my eggs cook faster than others.Question: Does egg cook time depend on the temperature of the water?
