February Meeting: Vintage Racing Motors
On February 18th, Saturday, we will have a general meeting at Vintage . Racing Motors in Redmond. VRM is run by long time club member Byron Sanborn. Byron's partner in the venture is Bruce McCaw.
Vintage Racing Motors is probably the top restoration/maintenance shop for vintage race cars in the Northwest. When we visit, we will be able to see the projects in process and lots of finished cars that are stored at VRM.
On a recent visit, I viewed a selection of cars that is an indication of what you can expect to see at our meeting. Included were: a Formula One Cooper, a Shelby Can-Am car (one of three built), Augie Pabst's Scarab, a '67 Camara Z28, several Porsche endurance racers, an Allard, a Legends racer, a BMW-engined Elva, a . .. Well, you get the idea. Several dozen historic race and street cars.
So show up at 10:00 sharp. Byron will show us around and provide the history of each car. Don't miss it.

Stalls (Mr. Nast's making a living got in the way of writing a column this rrwnth. So he suggested recycling one from "six or seven years ago." So after much digging, we offer this "Best of Stalls" from July 1984 - Editor)
"Everyone should have a friend with a pickup," is one of the more sound pieces of advice I have been given. Oddly enough, the fellow dropping that pearl had a pickup at the time, which he sold not long afterwards.
About three years ago I reached a point of desperation and actually bought a pickup of my own. What a mistake! I almost never used it, and when I did it burned fantastic amounts of fuel (for a GM six) which is why two tanks were installed, even though the switching relay to one didn't work when starting and the other had a filler which was cleverly designed so that it would click off the pump nozzle if you flowed in gas at more than one gallon an hour, which was five times slower than the truck burned the stuff. Furthermore, I had a few friends of my own who would borrow the truck, and return it with between one pint and one quart of gas. Twice in one week, it ran out of fuel as I drove it from the dropoff point to the gas station. Fortunately, an insurance company paid for the left side of the truck, and the rest was sold to an electrical lineman who must be someone's friend.
So for the last few years I have more or less freely borrowed Jim Toole's truck, which is a Ford V-8 of varying vintages, depending on which particular piece of sheet metal you inquire about. It starts at about 1966. Jim's dad got this truck when Jim was in his formative years, and Jim used it as a testbed for various hop-up experiments in the '60s, some of which are still in evidence, such as a fancy wiggle-stick and a carb through which fuel flows niagraly.
The truck abounds with other custom details. For example, most of the exhaust

manifold studs having long since departed, two C-clarnps secure an end of each manifold. These are a significant improvement over the vise-grips which did the job for so many years. The manifolds spill into pipes which end just abaft the cabin; if any mufflers are present, they are merely ballast.
The truck rarely has more than a quarter tank of gas in it when I pick it up (I often wonder how many quarts of water are condensed at the bottom of the tank). I used to fill the tank up for Jim when I borrowed the truck. Unfortunately, the cabin would smell strongly of gas after making a left turn with the tank full, so I stopped filling it all the way up. Even more unfortunately, the cabin would smell strongly of gas after making a right turn with the tank more than half full. That appears to be the truck's functional capacity, and it doesn't take you very far.
Unable to courteously fill the tank, I dutifully replenish the oil. It is difficult to say whether more oil is leaked than is burned, but the truck always needs at least two quarts. Much of the oil has been deposited on the air cleaner, which I suspect mostly keeps clean air out of the engine. A film of oil has been deposited on the engine and environs, keeping such critical parts as the distributor cap from rusting. Given its prodigious appetite, age and condition, I find oil-feeding time an appropriate occasion for changing the oil in a motorcycle. After all, it's hard to find a place to dump used motor oil these days, and it doesn't get that dirty between changes in a bike. Once I spilled three gallons of 90 weight in the truck bed, which helped keep the rust down for a few months, but that oil did have an odor about it and leaked through the rust perforations anyway.
The right rear tire loses air so fast that you have to park the truck across the street, lest the hissing keep you up all night. The brakes were a lesson in urban planning (you had to do a lot of plan-
ning, at least if you drove near buildings, trees or traffic) until last June. In June Jim had an emergency (an emergency is a stop at 5 mph with less than one day's notice) and he spun the truck. This led to the discovery that some little fiddly parts that hold the brake shoes onto the backing plate had fallen off, the self adjusters didn't, &c. Some parts are still missing but Jim has the truck stopping respectably now. Only trouble is, if it decelerates faster than a super-tanker the carb stalls the motor out.
It's a great old truck. Nobody would steal it, and because it looks utterly uninsured, nobody dares get in its way. Why Jim wants to clean it up, derust it and paint it, I'll never know. It would just get hit the next day. And besides, who would want to lend a clean truck to a friend? And that's what pickups are for. Isn't it?

It's Driving Time Again ... Start Your Engines By Dan Alvis
-----------------------------------------If you were unfortunate enough to miss our last drivers' school, well here is your chance again. We have rented the Bremerton Raceway at the Bremerton International Airport for the 4th of March. This will be the first event of the year. The school is for club members and wanna-be members who share an interest in improving their driving skills. Club members will be given priority. Any make of car is welcome.
What is a drivers' school and why should I attend? Our club drivers' school gives you the opportunity to drive your BMW the way it was meant to be driven! That is, on the edge and safe. This school is a learning experience which will teach you real life-saving driving techniques. This is not a racing school. The emphasis is on technique and smoothness. Speed will come with patience. Each student will have a trained instructor in their BMW at all times, until the instructor feels the student is ready to go solo.
Can I hurt my car or myself? Safety is the number one concern of the club drivers' school. That's why we have them. You are in control of your car. You can go fast or slow as you are comfort-
able. Your instructor will not push you beyond your abilities. Remember your instructor is in the car with you. The club provides professional fire and paramedic safety workers at the track. All our schools are well planned and are very safe. Prepare yourself and your BMW.
Yes, you can bring your own car! Proper preparation of your car is extremely important for your safety and the safety of everyone involved. Tires and brakes are the most stressed parts of your car. Your car will be required to pass a safety inspection before the event. Details on the car inspection will be given to you in ample time to prepare your car. You don't need a modified car, we want safe ones. It's up to the school officials to determine if the car you bring will be acceptable for this type of performance school. Rental cars are welcome too.
What can I expect? I've never even broken the speed limit!! Well, if you're in this group, then this school's for you. All students will be divided into groups based on their experience levels. Your instructor will guide you through the basics only after you have had several

exercises in braking, car handling, and skid control training. All beginning students will attend classes, and will have ample track time.
It's great fun. A family event. Bring the whole family, a picnic lunch, sunscreen, lawn chairs and make it a day. The student driver will be very busy, and will want all your support and enthusiasm. If you plan on bringing children, please be sure and also bring another adult to watch after them. You will be very busy. Please refrain from bringing pets.
Helpers needed!!! We need help to conduct the school. If you are interested in helping at the track the day of the event please call immediately. It pays to help. If you help at any three of the eight events this year you get credit for one free track day. We need safety persons, pit crew and general organizers. Come on and get involved, it's great fun.
How much does it cost? For members of the club, the cost is $65, for nonmembers it is $90. If two people are sharing the same car it is $100. If you wait till the day of the event, it will cost $25 more. After you send in your registration information we will send you an info packet with a handbook and lots of useful stuff to help prepare you and your car.
How do I get there? Get on I-5 and drive north or south to Tacoma. Follow the signs for Bremerton and Highway 16 west, over the Tacoma Narrows bridge. Go about 16 miles to the Port Orchard I Old Cliffton Road exit located just past mile marker 26. Tum left at the stop sign at the bottom of the hill. Follow the Old Cliffton Road for about four miles and you will see a five-way intersection of Sunny Slope Road and Victory Drive. Go straight through and you will see a Texaco station on the left. Keep straight for about another mile and you will come to the entrance to the track. You never get off of Old Cliffton Road.
For more information call Dan Alvis at 206-582-0803.
Call to All Driving Instructors and Wannabees
It is a goal of mine to increase the base of instructors in the club to enhance the drivers' schools and raise the quality of the schools that we run. As it is, we put on a high quality school with a very good safety record. As good as anyone in the country. I would like anyone who desires to be an instructor to call me and we will train you to be just that.
Prerequisites. You must be a level two sign off in your log book. You must possess the right attitude and demeanor to work with students at all levels. (No egomaniacs). Having some teaching experience is a plus.
Just being able to drive fast is not important at all. You must be able to be calm in all situations, set a good ex -ample on and off the track, and be able to explain what is happening between the track and the car and the car and the driver clearly and concisely.
If this interests you at all please call me ASAP!! There will be an on-track drivers' training clinic on the 18th of February starting at 8;00 am and going till about 2:00 pm. All present and current instructors are invited and all candidates must attend. Contact Dan Alvis for more details, 206-582-0803.

Four Liters + Six Speeds
For those of you inconsolable over the fact that BMW is no longer importing the legendary MS to this country, cheer up, its more than worthy successor has arrived. Just released, with very little fanfare I might add, is the S40i equipped with a Getrag six-speed manual transmission, M-tuned suspension, sport seats and limited slip differential. BMW is responding to the wishes of its customers in producing this car, much the same way the new M3 was brought to this country. BMW claims that it will not abandon the needs of the enthusiast driver and they seem to be serious with the introduction of this car.
I recently had a chance to drive the S40i so equipped, courtesy of Phil Cyphers and BMW of Bellevue. Phil and I set out on a crisp, clear winter morning to put the car through its paces. My first impression was how really beautiful this car was in black on black. Second, the car can be driven as hard and fast as the driver wishes. The S40i is confidence inspiring in all conditions. The 32-valve VS revs so quickly and quietly that the tach needle reaches the redline with amazing speed. The gears of the six speed transmission seem to be placed perfectly, with sixth being overdrive, suited mostly for highway cruising. The clutch has a nice progressive touch, with pedal feel being quite light. Power comes on very smoothly and like the new M3 is completely linear. Due to the great amount of torque available you can grab any gear, hit the throttle and the car leaps forward. I had to keep a close eye on the speedometer for fear of having a long talk

with one of Bellevue's finest. BMW claims a 0 to 60 time of 6.2 seconds and I have no reason to doubt it.
The suspension is fitted with stiffer anti-roll bars and finner and lower springs than the auto S40i. The setup is very sporting and much more responsive than in the shiftless version. As a result it drives like a much smaller car. The suspension seems to me to be just a
touch softer than the MS, but that may be mostly due to the tires. Which brings up my only criticism of the car. The wheels are wimpy IS-inch specimens shod with all-season R rated tires. This equipment seems a little out of place on a car with such high performance potential.
I was reminded while driving the S40 of the S3Sis made in 1987-88, which was basically an MS without the MS engine. The S40i six-speed is like that, only with more power of course. As great as the MS was, the S40i certainly doesn't suffer in comparison. I have had a chance to drive both first and second generation MSs and this car does not disappoint.
-- Fun
The S40i automatic lists at $47,9SO with the six speed costing $49,900 (due mostly to the gas guzzler tax the automatic avoids) with traction control and heated seats the only options. If that seems like a lot of money, it is. But consider this, that's what an E28 MS cost in 1987. The tariff is also about $13,000 cheaper than the current MS. The time spent driving this car seemed to end much too soon. When BMW says they intend to keep the enthusiast driver happy, the S40i six-speed proves it.

When BMW introduced the market segment known as "sports sedans" back in 1968, they did it by putting the larger two-liter engine from the 2000 into the 1602 and re-naming it the 2002. In 1972 BMW took it even further by adding the 2002tii to the line up of sports sedans. The tii had a mechani· cally fuel-injected two-liter four· cylinder engine, and went like stink. In its day, there was not one competitor that could outrun . . . out-accelerate . .. or out-corner the tii ... and still
do it with room for four, complete with luggage in the roomy trunk. A true enthusiast's family car. This car was so popular among car enthusiasts, that when they met on streets or highways, they would flash their lights as
a greeting. If a 2002 owner ran into another 2002 owner at a parking lot, they immediately were bosom buddies. I know - I was there .
Over the years BMW built better and more expensive cars as time progressed, and in many ways they priced themselves out of the young enthusiast market. Granted the M3 and the M5 along with all the other models BMW currently makes are all sport sedans. However, they are cars built and sold to the up-scale,
high-income enthusiast market. Over the years the early BMW 2002 owners complained and wanted to move on into a new BMW model , and in some cases had to settle for a pre-owned version of the model they wanted. Now
however, things are about to change! Sometime this spring, your friendly BMW dealer will be able to sell you a true enthusiast's sport sedan for under $20,000!!! The dickens you say? The 318ti will be here!
You may have seen articles or read tests in Automobile and AutoWeek, of the new 316i compact , which was introduced in Europe around the first of this year, forget it all! This is not the same car.
I'll say it again - the 318ti is an enthusiast's car!
The car comes very well equipped too. Three versions will be imported into the U.S. The Basic ... the Active . . . and the Sport. All versions come with ABS brakes, dual air bags, heated outside rear view mirrors, five-speed transmission , heated windshield washer jets, power windows, central locking, anti-theft AM/ FM cassette radio with six speakers, anti-theft system, air conditioning system with CFC free refrigerant, micro-filtered ventilation, map light, and even a removable flash light in the glove box. The radio is also pre-wired for a 6 disc CD changer and the car is prewired for a cellular telephone. The base price for the Basic version is $19,900 - a true bargain .
1995 February ZUNDFOLGE 9
The Active version will have cruise control, alloy wheels with 205/60-15 tires, on-board computer, 2-way sunroof and leatherwrapped steering wheel, shift knob and handbrake grip as well as a remote keyless-entry security system.
The Sports version has a BMW Motorsport-designed suspension system with the same alloys and tires as the Active version. It has front and rear fog lights, sport seats and upholstery in leather and cloth. It also has the same leatherwrapped steering wheel, shift knob and handbrake grip as the Active.
On all models several options can be added: a four-speed automatic, electronically-controlled transmission, limited-slip differential , metallic paint, cruise control and sunroof (Base and Sport version), a premium audio system with 1 O speakers, CD changer, cellular telephone and a roof rack. Of course the BMW maintenance program can also be added as an option .
The market segment that this new BMW will be competing in is a very tough segment to say the least. Mostly Japanese cars, such as the Acura lntegra .. . Mazda MX6 . .. Toyota Celica ... as well as the Ford Probe . . . VW GTI .. . and others. Here the 318ti has several advantages over the very competent competition. BMW is the only model with rear-wheel drive. There is NO WAY a front wheel drive car can be made to handle as well as a rear wheel drive car. There is also the famous BMW feel, something that both the Japanese and theAmericans have tried for years to duplicate, and the BMW mystique. The BMW pricing is right in the ball park for this category.
The 318ti is powered by the same engine as the 318i and the 318iS, the four cylinder, 1.8 liter twin-cam which has proven itself to be very durable and capable . Because of the reduced weight of the 318ti (132 lbs. less than the coupe and almost 500 lbs. less than the convertible) this car does 0 to 60 in around 9 seconds with a top speed of 116 (computer limited). Since the 1.8 liter engine has been around for a couple of years,
10 ZUNDFOLGE February 1995
companies such as Dinan and Autothority, to name two, already have chips for the computer to enhance both acceleration times by a second or so, as well as an increase in the top speed.
I had a chance to drive the car in it's Base and Sport versions on the autobahn in Southern Germany .. . and in the Austrian Alps. Both in the rain and on dry roads the handling is more than up to par. The BMW Motorsport-designed suspension on the Sport is incredible, a worth-while option for the enthusiast who plans to drive the car at driving schools and slaloms. Keep in mind that the rear suspension is not the same as the regular 318i. Since this car is about 9 inches shorter than the 318, there was no room for the newer rear suspension. Instead, it is equipped with trailing arms like the older E-30 3-series. Some writers have been quick to point this out in a derogatory manner. However, remember that the M3 (first generation) came equipped with the same suspension, and that model has probably won more races than any other make or model in racing history.
Driving hard in the Alps is a joy with a car like this. Although the four-cylinder engine is somewhat down on low-end torque, by keeping the revs above 3500 it more than holds its own. Besides, with the engine "cooking" around four thousand or five thousand rpm, there is no need for the radio. The sound from the engine is pure sweet music by itself. I was following Dennis Simanaitis from Road & Track up and down the serpentine roads of the Austrian Alps, and there was nothing that kept up with us. Actually, we saw a Honda lntegra (Acura in the U.S.) almost fall off the mountain just trying to stay ahead of us. Dennis was probably pushing the Honda a little too hard, because coming out of a tight hairpin, the lntegra spun a 360 up on the embankment on the right side. Had he done so on the left side he would have experienced a 5000 foot drop down to Saltzburg. Of course both Dennis and I stopped and checked out the car. However, since the older woman who was
the passenger in the Honda started to beat its driver with an umbrella, Dennis and I continued, and for as far as we could see the car, it was sitting up on the embankment, with the woman still beating on the driver (something probably upset her). Dennis and I continued back to Munich at a quick pace, thoroughly enjoying the car.
Although the cars the press drove in Germany were prototypes, built like the ones we will get in the U.S., we were assured that the U.S. versions were exactly like the ones we drove. The actual U.S. cars will not start to roll off the assembly lines until after the first of the year, and should be here around March.
After the first of the year, all models built by BMW will come with a new security feature. Embedded in the key head, there will be a small micro chip. When the key is inserted into the lock, the main ECU (computer) will have to recognize this chip, or the car cannot start. It doesn't matter if the lock mechanism is broken or removed, or if the key fits, if the chip is not recognized by the ECU, the car won't start.
The sport version is definitely the one to get! The sport seats are terrific, easy to get in and out of, yet holds you in tight cornering. Other "must have" options are the limited-slip differential, sunroof, cruise control and the 10-speaker audio system (for those days when you are not pushing the car up and down the mountains).
As good as this car is, there is still one version of the 318ti to really save your money for. This is the A.C. Schnitzer-prepared version. A.C. Schnitzer took the 3-liter from the US M3, tuned it and stuffed it into the 318ti , tricked out the suspension, added 8-inch wide wheels in the front with 235/40-17 tires and 8.5-inch wide wheels in the rear with 245/40-17 tires. The A.C. Schnitzer S3-3.0 has a top speed of around 150 mph, a 0 to 60 of a little over 5 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 13.5 seconds. This is "big-boys" stuff! We are now in Porsche Turbo , Corvette ZR 1, Ferrari F40 etc. territory. A Swedish car magazine drove the
S3-3.0 at a race track in Southern Sweden at one of the Swedish BMW Club meets. They reported that this car is a joy to drive. ·we could pass at will anywhere on the track. We didn't have to hit the apex, instead the car forgave every stupid move we made. There was nothing there faster or as fast. We really want - nay - need this car·.
I concur, this would definitely be the car to have.
Now the best thing: It was reported that the reason that Schnitzer chose the US M3 engine instead of the European version was that there are plans to sell this car in the U.S. What they apparently are looking for is a few selected BMW dealers willing to sell and service this car. They even mentioned a projected price of $45,000 to $50,000. In Germany the car sells for around DM 80,000.
So did I like the 318ti in its factory version? Yes, so much in fact, that Fia and I plan to get one come next summer. Sport version of course! This is the first time in over ten years of testing cars, that I wanted to purchase the car for my personal use! That is how good this car is.
There have been rumors in the German press that around next summer, BMW plans to enlarge the 1.8 liter engine to 2 liters. The additional power is said to be used in the lower rpm ranges to enhance the low-end torque. That certainly would be the way to go.
As the heading states: This is without a doubt a reincarnation of the 2002/2002tii. It just feels right!

The banquet held January 21st was simply our best ever. The Harbor Club was a stunning site. This private club that's been recently remodeled, was classy with its hardwoods and marble. The 17th floor location and unobstructed view of Elliott Bay made it better still. We may return to this place.
We had the entire club reserved, so we had a room for the auction, the bar was in a second room, and dinner was in a third. No crowding.
There was some resistance to $32 dinners, but the food was outstanding. I heard no complaints from those in attendance.
Member Diane Pearce, a pianist, entertained us through dinner with beautiful music on a grand piano in the dining room.
Steve Pool, KOMO weatherman was our speaker. I think he was the best

speaker we've ever had. As much fun as David Hobbs. He talked about some of the funny things that have happened offcamera during broadcasts, doing Good Morning America, his cars (currently a Cobra, a Porsche and a BMW 530i) and flying with the Blue Angels. He had the crowd in the palm of his hand. Steve even brought good weather and his remarkably beautiful bride of three weeks. A real auctioneer livens up the oral auction.
You should have been there. And that was the only low point: the turnout was poor. Maybe Steve Pool wasn't a great draw, maybe the price scared a few people away. The board would like to know what would get you to a banquet, so let us know. Only a few of us are having all the fun!
An event like this takes a lot of work. Thanks to Al and Bea Lancaster for chairing the event. Thanks to all that worked as greeters and auction spotters. And thanks to all the businesses that

WHY THE NEW 7 LOOKS LIKE THE OLD 7
Much has been written recently of the seeming malaise that currently afflicts automotive styling. We seem to have reached a point where little progress is being made; most new designs are simply old ideas being recycled, albeit with detail improvements.
Robert Cumberford in Automobile says this problem is particularly acute amongst luxury
cars. Since the top tier cars sell in relatively small numbers, they are expected to last for six to eight years or even longer. This is a necessity to amortize the press tools over a reasonable number of units. Automobiles in this range are also usually sold to a clientele with fairly conservative tastes.
But perhaps the worst problem, says Cumberford, is executives paralyzed by success, afraid to change anything on a car that has been successful in the marketplace. Examples abound: The new Jaguar sedan looks like the '68 version. The new Lexus LS 400 is a copy of the old, which was in turn a copy of a Mercedes Benz. Mercedes tried to break new.ground with the S-class and fell on its face.
Which brings us to the all new 7-series, which is hard to tell from the old 7-series. When the new 7 was being developed, CEO Eberhard von Kuenheim was nearing retirement. The styling
department was in disarray because Claus Luthe had suddenly departed (for prison after murdering his son). Luthe's temporary replacement was given no authority. BMW was finally outselling Mercedes, why change?
Now BMW has a new leader in Bernd Pischetsreider and a new chief stylist in Chris Bangle. The PR crap about how BMW buyers want conservative styling will end as soon as the first Bangle - designed BMW s reach market.
The Classic Car Club of America held its annual meeting in January at the Red Lion in Bellevue. The theme was the I 934 A.uto Salon. The classics
on display were arranged to resemble an auto s how in 1934. Event chairperson was BMW A.CA.
member Conrad Wouters. BMW Seattle owner Steve Norman sponsored the event. The banquet hall
featured three new BMWs and the beautiful BMW 328 owned by another BMW A.CA. member,
Nancy Martin.

111t Base price of the 31 Bti, which should arrive in March or April, is expected to be $20,370. This undercuts the 31 Bi sedan, the cheapest cufrent BMW, by $5,070. In a test, the hatchback was summed-up as having extreme cuteness, all the typical 3-series handling and quality features and merely adequate power from the 1.8-liter fourcylinder motor. BMW expects to sell 6,000 to 7,000 in North America. (Car & Driver)

Mid-Engine BMW, 1998 The last time BMW created a mid-engine coupe was in 1978
with the stunning M 1. Twenty years later, in 1998, Munich will be launching the M 1 o. Built on the current 3-series platform and powered by a compact V-6, the MIO was penned by BMWs design chief, American Chris Bangle. The car's 24-valve 3 .0-liter V-6 is expected to produce 230 bhp. The doors get a unique horizontal-split design by which the glass lifts onto the roof while the lower half drops into the roclfer, a la BMWs ZI roadster from a few years baclf. Price for the M 1 O coupe should be around $75,000. {Road & Traclf}
