The Urals is a vast land of enormous wealth. Although the Russians were accustomed to live on the plain, they settled in the Urals in the XI century. The Ural mountain range stretches for 2500 kilometres and runs along the meridian from the cold tundra in the north to the arid semi-desert in the south. It separates the European part of Russia from the Asian one. Over millions of years water, wind, heat and frost have eroded the Ural mountains and laid bare the wealth concealed in them. You can count as many as 5000 minerals there, about half of all the known minerals on our planet. The Ural stones are noted for their extraordinary colours: green malachite, rosy rhodonite, multi-coloured marble, speckled serpentine. Green emerald looks marvelous and costs more than gold. Gold and silver are also mined in the mountains. Among all the wonders of the Urals malachite deserves a special mention. The Ural malachite ranks among the best. It carries the viewer away with its beauty.

Jewelry is well-developed in the Urals. The Ural jewellers have created the immortal masterpieces. The Armoury, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin Fine Arts Museum in Moscow, the Ural Geological Museum, the Nizhny-Tagil Museum and others possess various pieces made of the Ural stones. In 1920 the Ilmen State Mineralogical Reserve was founded in the Southern Urals, near Miass. It turned out to be the first mineralogical reserve in the world. Its museum contains a unique collection of 200 minerals and attracts thousands of tourists. Within the reserve some 31 hectares of magnificent wilderness are preserved for millions of people to enjoy. Pine and birch forests with some pieces of steppe are available to visitors. Herds of spotted deer wander about unhunted and unafraid. Beavers have been rebuilt here. Many people who are fond of wild nature visit the Ilmen State Reserve because it is an extraordinary place to explore. There are two more famous reserves in the Urals: the Visimsky and Pechoro-Ilychski Reserves.

Since early times the Bashkirs, the Tatars and the Kazakhs have been living on the territory of the Chelyabinsk region. The Russians penetrated into the Urals at the end of the 13th century. But you can still find the aboriginal names of many villages and lakes. Lake Itkul is situated in the north of the Chelyabinsk region, not far from the town of Snezhinsk. It’s a real example of a mountainous lake. It is famous for its rock island which from the distance reminds a herd of cows drinking water. One more attraction of the lake is Shaitan Rock- a lonely stone sticking out of the water rather far from the shore. But the lake attracts visitors not only because of its natural beauty. The Bashkirs have been living on the shores of the lake for more than 300 years. While Lake Itkul has a historical significance Lake Arakul is famous for its marvelous beauty. Its main sight is Rock Shikhan. Its steep rocky walls are often used by rock climbers as a unique place for competitions. Both Arakul and Itkul are popular with holidaymakers.

Fifty-five years ago in the Ural taiga on the shore of a beautiful lake Sinara a new town was born. Today it is a wonderful cosy town with a poetic name Snezhinsk. Its people are the treasure of this Federal Nuclear Centre. They made history, planned the town, built beautiful houses, schools, kindergartens and hospitals. The All-Russian Research Institute of Technical Physics has made an enormous contribution ensuring the defence of our Motherland. 3000 highly qualified specialists were awarded by the state for their contribution to science and technology. The people of Snezhinsk keep all national Russian traditions and customs. Besides them, they also have their own ones connected with their particular lifestyle. The main famous tradition in Snezhinsk is its international scientific conference called Zababakhin Scientific Readings. It is held in memory of Academician Evgeny Zababakhin and named in his honour. The reports delivered here traditionally deal with scientific interests. The conference lasts for several days and is held every two or three years in spring. Snezhinsk hosts researchers from the USA, Great Britain, France, China and other countries concerned with the development of Zababakhin’s creative heritage.

The South Ural town of Kasli founded in 1747 is famous for its original masters of artistic iron casting. Genuine masterpieces reflect two-and a half-century history of the plant producing them. Gifted Russian sculptors Kanayev, Torokin and the skillful local workers were marked with the highest rewards at the All-Russian and International Exhibitions. In 1860 the Kasli works was awarded with the small gold medal of the Independent Economic Society. In a year a small silver medal of Saint Petersburg’s Textile exhibition joined it. Seven years passed and the glory of the Kasli masters became worldwide: large exhibitions in Paris, Vienna, Philadelphia, Copenhagen, Stockholm… In 1900 an openwork pavilion was molded from metal for the international exhibition in Paris. It is now exhibited in the Yekaterinburg picture gallery. Many renowned historical artistic sculptures in Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as the iron furniture at the Winter Palace, were produced by the Kasli works. Since then the Kasli plant has been considered an uncommon enterprise keeping its glorious traditions. Kasli is a treasure-house of artistic handiwork, a gallery of wonderful Russian masters who gave their talents for the good of Russia and its people.

Unique nature is undoubtedly one of the main heritages of Russia. If you look at the Urals from the bird’s eye view, you will see an amazing picture: it looks like a dense network of rivers and lakes thrown on a green blanket of woods. Rivers and lakes are vital sources of life. The principal rivers of the Urals are the Kama, the Pechora, the Urals, the Miass, the Uy. Except the Kama, they are not deep enough for navigation. Many picturesque lakes are situated in these areas of the country. There are 3000 lakes in the Chelyabinsk region alone. Lake Uvildy, the Turgoyak, the Kisegach, the Sinara, the Arakul, the Itkul are ideal for touring, relaxing and fishing. A variety of fish is found in the lakes. Among them there are breams, pikes, perches, zanders, burbots, ruffs, sigs, carps. Much effort has been taken to restore and preserve various species of fish. Trout has been put into some lakes. You will find your heart beating hard when you look at the breathtaking scenery of the Ural lakes. Active tourism and rafting fans come to the Urals every year because its nature leaves nobody indifferent.

The Urals is famous for its endless forests. The forests stretch away into the distance as far as the eye can see. The great mountain ranges are covered with evergreen pine trees and fir trees. Birches, aspens, mountain ashes, bird-cherry trees, hawthorns are common in the Urals. Oaks, elms, limes, maples grow in the west of the southern Urals. Pines rise high up and let much sunlight to the ground where about 100 species of herbs grow. Green meadows are carpeted with clover and couch grass. The forests are rich in wild berries and mushrooms. The forest is a source of food for birds and animals. The fauna of the Urals is various. Hares, squirrels, foxes, wolves, hedgehogs, bears are found in the forests. Mice, bats, beavers, elks, ondatras, susliks are numerous while lynxes, sables, polar foxes and martens are rare. There are small lizards, grass snakes, vipers, frogs and toads in the Urals. Butterflies, ants, bugs, grasshoppers, spiders, ladybirds fill the summer forests. About 60 bird species inhabit the Urals. The most numerous are crows, magpies, doves, gulls and wagtails.
