GOLF

You have to hand it to the inaugural3M Open.

Making its PGA Tour debut this weekin the slot home to the Fourth of July, thetournament in the Land of 10,000 Lakeslured Captain America.

Patrick Reed, the red, white and bluewrecking ball during the 2016 Ryder Cupat nearby Hazeltine National Golf Club,is one of the headliners in a strong fieldthat includes world No. 1 Brooks Koepkaand Phil Mickelson.

It’s Reed’s first trip back to Minneso-ta since he produced numerous explo-sions of fireworks over three days as theU.S. won the Ryder Cup 17-11 three yearsago. The memories from his 3-1-1 weekflooded back as soon as he got off theplane, and he was so excited to be backin the state that he played the front nineof the tournament’s host course, theTPC Twin Cities outside of Minneapolis,in the rain Monday.

“Coming back was awesome,” Reedsaid. “Of course, I thought of the RyderCup. That was special week. Honestly, after Hazeltine, when I heard there wasgoing to be an event up here, I was goingto come to see the awesome fans again. Ithink it’s great that the PGA Tour play-ers can showcase their talents here.

“The tournament fits my scheduleperfectly. It’s two weeks before the(British) Open at Royal Portrush. And Ialways love experiencing new placeswith the game.”

Joining him for Thursday’s start areteammates from the Ryder Cup: Koep-ka, the four-time major champ who wonthe PGA Championship and finishedsecond in the Masters and U.S. Openthis year; Mickelson, the five-time ma-

jor champ and World Golf Hall of Famemember who captured his 44th PGATour title this year in the AT&T PebbleBeach Pro-Am; 2016 PGA champion andsix-time Tour winner Jimmy Walker;and five-time Tour winner Ryan Moore.

Adding to the strong contingent are12-time Tour winner and major champi-on Jason Day; five-time Tour winnerBryson DeChambeau; Kevin Na, a win-ner at Colonial this year; major champi-on Keegan Bradley; Nate Lashley, whowon last weekend’s Rocket MortgageClassic in Detroit where he was the lastalternate to get into the field; Tony Fi-nau; and Hideki Matsuyama, who hasmade 24 consecutive cuts, the longeststreak on Tour.

Also playing on sponsor exemptionsare Minnesota natives Tom Lehman, who won five times on the PGA Tour, in-cluding the 1996 British Open, and 12times on the Champions Tour; and TimHerron, a four-time Tour winner.

If Reed produces like he did lastweekend in the Motor City, he should bein contention. He finally broke out of alengthy battle with his game by tying forfifth with rounds of 68-68-65-70. It washis first top-10 finish in 20 worldwide

starts as he fell to No. 25 in the world, not the production he anticipated afterwinning the Masters and finishingfourth in the U.S. Open in 2018.

“My coach and my team kept say-ing, ‘Hey, you’re really close, you’rereally close,’ but as a competitor, whenyou’re not contending and playing lateon Sundays, you’re wondering what’sgoing on,” Reed said. “I see the swing, Isee the putts I’m hitting, and yes, itlooks really close, but how close am I?

“Last week was one of those weeksthat I knew was there. I finally was ableto see a score that I really felt repre-sented how I was playing. I just neededa few things to click here and there, acouple more putts to fall, a few teeshots go my way. I got back into thatmind-set where I was in attack modetrying to win.”

The same mind-set he had in the2016 Ryder Cup and the 2018 Masters.

“Last week was great and I’m readyand excited for this week,” Reed said.“The field is very strong. The golfcourse is in great shape, and I’m look-ing forward to attacking it. Everythinglooks great right now. Can’t wait untilthe Fourth of July.”

With the Rocket Mortgage Classic inDetroit in the books, Blaine, Minnesota, the other new tournament added to the2018-19 PGA Tour schedule is, preparingfor its inaugural event.

Over the July 4 weekend, TPC TwinCities will host the 3M Open, an eventthat will be on the Tour schedule for thenext seven years.

This week tournament features sixplayers in the top 30 of the world rank-ings. World No. 1 Brooks Koepka head-lines the 156-player field. Rookie stand-outs Viktor Hovland, Matthew Wolffand Justin Suh will make their thirdconsecutive starts since turning profes-sional.

The 3M Open will take place twoweeks before the British Open at RoyalPortrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland, making it an ideal tuneup tournament

before the final major of 2019.TPC Twin Cities was the site of the

3M Championship on the PGA TourChampions since 2001 before receivinga PGA Tour event for 2019. The par-71,7,468-yard course was originally de-signed by Arnold Palmer, and Minneso-ta native Tom Lehman was a consultantin the changes to the course that tookplace to prepare it for a PGA Tour field.

TPC Twin Cities often yielded lowscores for Champions events, with the

former 54-hole 3M Championship tour-nament ranking in the top two for bird-ies on Tour in each of the last sevenyears.

Lehman, though, who will competewith a sponsor exemption, helpedlengthen and narrow the course, TheStar Tribune reported. Most of the holeshave experienced only small changes, but the 18th saw its pond near the greendouble in size while its tee box wasmoved, too.
