Outcome an outcome of technological practice that is not fully realised in situ may occur at any stage of technological practice includes such things as a:

○ brief

○ feasibility study

○ concept design

○ mockup/model

Technological outcome material products and/or systems that are fully realised in situ developed through technological practice for a specific purpose

TECHNOLOGICAL PRACTICE

Outcome versus Technological Outcome

Design idea often unrefined and incomplete – “I think” refined using functional modelling including feedback from

stakeholders, evaluating and testing sketch ideas and mockups aspects can be measured against the brief to determine its potential

‘fitness for purpose’

Concept design (design concept/conceptual design) refined design idea(s) – “I have evidence to that suggests” can be measured against a brief to determine its potential ‘fitness for

purpose’ realised as a model(s) and/or prototype

TECHNOLOGICAL PRACTICE

Design idea versus Concept design

Mockup – physical representation of a design idea (or part of an

intended technological outcome) that is used to test/predict the

designs feasibility

Model – physical representation of a concept design

(sometimes scaled) that enables the concepts feasibility to be

tested/predicted.

Prototype – first realised form of a technological outcome that

allows the outcome to be tested in situ (in its intended social

and physical environment)

TECHNOLOGICAL PRACTICE

Mockup versus model versus prototype

TECHNOLOGICAL PRACTICE

Mockups

Mockup – physical representation of a design idea or

part of an intended technological outcome that is

used to test/predict its potential to be ‘fit for purpose’

TECHNOLOGICAL PRACTICE

Models

Model – physical representation of a concept design (sometimes scaled) that enables the concepts potential ‘fitness for purpose’ to be tested/predicted.

TECHNOLOGICAL PRACTICE

Prototypes

Prototype – first realised form of a technological outcome that allows the outcome to be tested in situ (in its intended social and physical environment)
