MAY, A MONTH TO REMEMBER

Just about the time that you are reading this, I will betravelling with a delegation of three other representatives

from our Jurisdiction to Arlington, VA.The IOOF has solemnly honored ournation’s fallen heroes on the firstweekend in May. For myself, this willbe my third time participating in thisevent — once previously as aPatriarch’s Militant supporting thecolor detail, and twice now as a wreathbearer. Either way this event is hasbeen one of quiet reflection andrestorative grace.

TIME TO GET READY

FOR GRAND SESSIONS

The time is rapidly coming upon usfor our Annual Grand Sessions in Yakima. LodgeRepresentatives are encouraged to be in attendance thisyear as we will have some critical matters to discussregarding our current programs in the Jurisdiction.

LODGE VISITATIONS, THE GOOD, THE BAD,AND THE SOMETHING ELSE

One of the interesting things that a Grand LodgeOfficer gets to do throughout the term of office is tomake general visits to local lodges and observe the gen-eral nature of their lodge. Most recently I had the plea-sure to visit Mt. Constitution IOOF Lodge #88 on OrcasIsland While some may find their style of running ameeting to be the embodiment o, “Being an OddFellow,” they do show a necessary respect and obser-vance of the Tenets of our Order, and a continuing com-mitment to improve themselves by understanding moreabout our Order. During my visit, I was pleased toanswer their questions because they wished to have anunderstanding of how our Order came to its present man-ifestation. Also while I was there, it was brought to myattention that the Ballard-Alki “Travelling Gavel” hadbeen artificially, “deposited” in the Mt. Constitution #88Lodge hall, so to restore some balance of Order, it wasrequisitioned and its last known whereabouts was headedto Richland Lodge IOOF #338.

THE WASHINGTON ODD FELLOWS

MOTORCYCLE CLUB

Members of the Odd Fellows Motorcycle Club(OFMC) have been busy recently as they are at a cross-roads in their development. Originally, when the repre-sentatives of Grand Lodge were presented the concept ofhaving a Motorcycle Riding Club, the idea was presentedas an open and collaborative effort for members of theOrder to come together and freely participate. The

American Motorcycle Association (AMA) concept of ariding club is something that the Grand Lodge ofWashington has reviewed, and have received additionalinputs from other motorcycle riders within the Order andexternal to the Order. The provisions that allowed forthis recreational activity to take place under the bannerand identity of Odd Fellowship were initiated by theGrand Lodge of Washington. Because of this, the generalresponsibility, oversight, and governance of theMotorcycle Club activities ultimately resides with theGrand Lodge.

While the Grand Lodge wishes to commend the pas-sion and zeal with which the members of the WashingtonOdd Fellows Motorcycle Club have performed to date, there have been recent challenges with the governanceand transparency of the efforts undertaken in the name ofOdd Fellowship. Throughout the course of this process, the Grand Lodge of Washington has been tolerant andmeasured in its responses to these matters and the neces-sary corrective actions. The general appearance has beenthat the current Motorcycle Club is building a model ofactivity that is based more on an “MC” design and notcompatible with the general concepts, or Tenets of ourOrder. It is not compatible with the generally acceptedprinciples that the rest of the members in this Order havesubscribed to.

The Grand Lodge’s position on these matters is thatwe wish to commend the members who have spent thetime to learn about the IOOF as an Order, and starting toprioritize the needs of the IOOF appropriately. We hopethat in the future we will be able to work together to putin place a suitable recreational activity that all of uswithin the Order can be proud of.

The busy bees of South Tacoma are at it again. Theyhosted the District Association Meeting on April 18.Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves with good fellow-ship and good food. The new plan of making it a potluckand the dress being casual went over well with everyone.

On Thursday, May 7, they are hosting the annual“Friendship Night.” As an incentive to attend, the ViceGrand is providing a nice prize for the lodge whichbrings the most members. We hope to see you there.

SPRING IS THE SEASON OF NEW BEGINNINGS

Dear Brothers and Sisters, With spring comes signs of new beginnings with flow-

ers blooming, trees with blossoms andgrass growing all to fast for mowing. We see baby chickens, calves andducks appear in the fields around thefarms.

For some lodges the new beginningis no longer being a lodge, becauseafter much hard work members havechosen to turn in their Charters. Myheart hurts for the members of theselodges because they have tried. I hopethey will join another lodge or becomea member of the State Lodge. OtherLodges have found success in

Consolidating with a lodge that is close. I wish for themsuccess as they combine and hope that the combiningbrings the members an increased sense of strength andcamaraderie.

Consolidation was an excellent choice three years agofor my lodge. Both lodges found more enthusiasm, moremembers to help with the projects of the order and wehave a quorum at the meetings. We gained two newmembers and later two transferees joined our ranks. Atthis time we are looking at two new members with oneapplication assigned to the visiting committee.

In lodges where we are seeing new members, it mayonly be one or two in the year, but the one or two addedmay encourage a friend to become a member. We, aswell as many fraternal organizations, are working toincrease membership and survive.

WHAT DO WE CHANGE?On several of my visitations there has been discussion

about what might be changed to help our Order. Do wehave the answers to all the issues? I don’t believe so, butI do believe as we discuss them openly we may see someways to improve.

At a recent visitation there were new members inattendance who were concerned about what to do whenan Assembly President visits. We talked about it. We, aslong-standing members, need to remember that knowingwhat to do may be seconded nature to us because wehave done it many times, however we need to share ourknowledge with new members by letting them knowwhere they can find the information so they can study it.Your lodge may take five minutes at a meeting for amember to share something they feel is important fromthe Constitution, Ritual or the Book of Instruction. It isan excellent review for all members.

SPECIAL HOLIDAYS IN MAY

We have some very special holidays in the May. May10 is Mothers’ Day and I wish all mothers a happy daywith family and friends. I choose Armed Forces Day,May 16, to give special thanks to all our members whohave served in any branch of the United States ArmedForces or are currently serving. I thank your families forthe sacrifices they have made so you might serve. May25 is Memorial Day, which was originally known asDecoration Day and was initiated to honor the soldiersfrom the Union and Confederate Armies who died duringthe American Civil War. It was later expanded to includedeceased veterans of all the wars fought by Americanforces. If you have lost a loved one or know someonewho has, I offer my sincerely thanks for their service toour country and for your loss.

In closing I share this quote by Jesse Owens: “Findthe good. It’s all around you. Find it, showcase it andyou’ll start believing in it.”

In BallardSalmon Bay Rebekahs #217

It’s “Spring Cleaning” time in Ballard! TheBallard/Alki Odd Fellows are working on making moreefficient use of our beautiful building in Ballard, somembers of Salmon Bay did our part. We reorganizedand consolidated all our supplies and equipment, freeingup several storage lockers for rentals and other uses.

In the process, several historically-significant jewelswere uncovered which Noble Grand Genie Coston willturn over to District Deputy President Barbara Reitan forsubmission to the Odd Fellows museum. Though there isstill much work to be done, the members breathed a sighof relief when about half of the lodge cleaning and orga-nizing was done.

After all that physical work, we enjoyed a lovelylunch with Easter treats followed by a business meeting. All the record keeping paperwork is current and finan-cially we are still solid and can make our usual donationsthis year. Salmon Bay is continuing to brainstorm waysto maintain the level of charitable donations and commu-nity service in the future. Notably, we plan to increaseour “coin drill” donations as each of us are able to buildour fund for donations. Warden Regina Thomas proposedthe formation of a committee to provide a dinner for ourneighbors at the Nyer Urness Housing Project this sum-mer. In F., L. & T., Donna Flatt, Reporter

Hello again from Trinity. I was hoping that spring hadsprung, but it’s been nothing but rain, rain, rain, and afair bit of wind, too! I guess that’s Washington for you.

First on my list is a correction to last month’s article.Pat Harader is happily home. Her stay at Cook’s Hill wasthankfully a brief one, so you can now catch her back ather Napavine.

A pizza party was held at the our lodge on Thursday,April 9 to discuss final plans for our Community GarageSale on April 16-17. It’s been advertised well enough inadvance so I hope it pays off.

It’s good to have Vanita Malone back to our meetingsagain. We are working on her transportation issues. Nowshe just needs to pick up her new glasses.

We are going to miss Sandy Halderman as she is mov-

ing in June. A farewell picnic is in the planning. We willkeep you posted. That’s all for now.
