Rebellion in Dublin - Easter in 1916. First rebellion in Ireland since 1798. IRB, Irish Citizen Army and Cumman na

mBan fought British Forces. They believed in using force to remove the

British from Ireland. Should have taken place all over Ireland. Due to a lot of confusion, very little

happened outside Dublin.

Irish Republican Brotherhood members joined GAA, Sinn Féin and other groups.

This was to encourage the members to use violence against the British.

World War I was ongoing, so the rebels seized the moment to fight.

About 1,250 volunteers took over different parts of the city.

The GPO was the centre of the Rising. Pádraig Pearse read the Proclamation of

Independence from the steps of the GPO on Easter Monday.

Fierce fighting followed and the Irish surrendered to the British on the following Saturday.

As well as many men, there was a large number of women involved.

They fought side by side with the men, as well as cooking, nursing and delivering messages and supplies.

One very important woman in the Easter Rising was ElizabethO’Farrell.
