1 ~~PRINCIPAL’S REPORT~~ ~~ RELIEVING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT~~ Higher School Certificate Examinations are almost done for some of our candidates and soon they will be signing out. As part of the process, all subject fees must be paid off before Year 12 students can sign out. Subject fees, as distinct from the Public Schools ‘Voluntary Contribution’ enable us to pay for the resources, equipment and materials required to deliver courses of study. This also applies to students in all other years as well. We recognise our role as a public school and are sensitive to the demographic of our clientele, so we endeavour to keep these costs as low as possible. Account statements have been posted this week and we would appreciate that these can be settled as quickly as possible. If there are any issues regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact me personally at the school on (02) 6953 2122. We have acknowledged that we have to do more to lift the profile of Assessment within our learning community. Pleasingly, we can say that an Assessment Calendar has been developed which can be accessed via the front page of our school website, or via updates on our Facebook page, by anyone who wishes to know the due dates of hand-in tasks or the examination schedule. For instance, here is the Year 7-9 Exam schedule for November: The next phase of this development involves attaching files to the task events, so that people can download revision questions, practice papers or copies of a hand-in task. As the Calendar shows, Junior Examinations begin next week. I strongly urge that revision efforts in the Junior School be lifted to the next level of intensity. Good luck to all! In order to make our next cohort of Year 7 students more comfortable upon their arrival next year, we ran a Transition Program for the Year 6 students in our feeder schools. In order to gauge the effectiveness of this program, we are asking that students and parents of this 2015 Year 6 and Year 7 students complete a simple survey. This can be accessed on-line via Survey Monkey on the address below: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DC3FHCH

Again a link has been placed on our Facebook page and we welcome your feedback, in order to provide a better service. Congratulations to Kyle McVittie of Year 11 who earned medals in two categories in the Riverina Murray WorldSkills VET in School (VETis) competitions. At the presentation Night on 20 October at Kooringal High School’s Performing Arts Centre, Kyle received a Gold medal for the Metals & Engineering category and a Silver medal for the Electrotechnology category. As a result of this impressive achievement, Kyle now has the opportunity to progress through to the 2016 WorldSkills National Competition to be held in Melbourne, where he will compete against Australia’s best vocational engineering students. Wow! To conclude, I would like to stress the importance of communication between home and school. If you have any questions on any issue, please do not hesitate to call us on 6953-2122 or email [email protected] with your concerns. Stay in touch with the happenings at your community High School on our Facebook page – http://www.facebook.com/LeetonHS.

~~RELIEVING DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT~~

Three weeks into term 4 and I seem to be talking to students and parents about the same things on a regular basis, and unfortunately too often these things are incidents in our school that can be easily avoided. We must work together and move towards students taking more responsibility for their learning and their actions. Without going into too much detail, students must make sure they have a note explaining any absence from school, if they are going to be out of uniform or if they are going to be picked up during the school day. There are a large number of students not doing this and as a result has found themselves ‘level dropped’ for not following these simple procedures. Some Year 11 students now have their P’s and are driving to school. I would like to remind them that there is a form they must get from me to complete if they are going to drive to school. Again without going into details, students drive to school, park in the designated area, attend school for the day and then drive home. Students, under no circumstances, are to have any other students in their car or leave during the school day. Year 11 has now received their reports and many students have decided to drop a subject for their HSC. It is important that these forms are completed and returned to me as soon as possible. Junior yearly exams started this week with Year 10 and then continue over the next two weeks with Year 7 to 9. Students are encouraged to make their best effort in preparing for and completing these exams. Damian Bush, Relieving Deputy Principal

SCHOOL NEWS

SELECTION INTO WIND ENSEMBLE & CHOIR Congratulations to Amelie Sachs of Year 7 who has been selected in the ‘West of the Divide’ Wind Ensemble and Choir. The ensemble will be touring Vienna in September next year. Amelie plays the Alto Saxophone and is a member of the town band. The ensemble consists of talented musicians and singers from government schools West of the Divide. Amelie has the opportunity to work with professional international conductors, and she will be attending concerts of professional orchestras.

SCHOOLS SPECTACULAR DANCE REHEARSAL On Friday 16 October our Spec Dance Ensemble travelled to Wagga Wagga High School to work with choreographers Kathryn Fisher and Camilla Jakimowicz, along with students from Wagga Wagga High and the Riverina Albury Dance Ensemble. This year our Schools Spectacular segment celebrates the music and dance styles of Michael Jackson. The Riverina students will join with other schools from the Western region, dancing to the Jackson hit ‘Beat It’ in the opening number of the medley. The girls were challenged with some difficult choreography and worked hard to meet the high expectations of the two choreographers. The segment will also feature other non-metropolitan areas such as the New England, Mid and Far North Coast and the Illawarra. They will perform to the songs ‘Black and White’ and ‘I Want You Back’, before all the regions join together for a 220+ dancer strong segment finale to ‘Blame it on the Boogie’. The LHS Ensemble will travel to Wagga again in mid-November to learn the remaining choreography and polish want they have already learnt. The group will also be practicing every Wednesday from 3:30-4:30pm and it is essential that all involved attend these vital rehearsals.

DEBATING Congratulations to the Year 7 debating team who defeated Yanco Agricultural High School last Tuesday. The topic, That Combat Sports Should be Banned, was hotly contested by both sides. It was a narrow victory to our team as the negative side, who demonstrated a stronger rebuttal style and an understanding of the less structured concept of debating as it is done today. They are now the Zone and Region Champions and will soon go on to debate in the semi-finals to determine the Riverina Champions who go to the State finals. Best of luck to: Amelie Sachs, Kaila DePaoli, Abbey Snell and Jenna Preston.

SCHOOL SPORTS

OPEN GIRLS CRICKET On Monday 19 October the Leeton High School Open Girls Cricket Team played Hay High in the 3rd round of the Marie Cornish Cup. Hay won the toss and batted compiling a massive score of 5 for 267 after their allotted 40 overs. Paris Crelley (2 for 34), Katie Wallett (2 for 25) and Michaela Jones Grieve (1 for 34) bowled well for Leeton High in the onslaught. In reply Leeton High manage a respectable 75, with Sarah Quinlivan (11) and Paris Crelley (10) being the only batters to reach double figures. Congratulations to all girls who played on the day your fielding was excellent and the effort that you have all given in training was first class. Well done! Mr Doyle
