Coleridge’s suffered from anxiety and depression. Some say that he also suffered from bipolar disorder though this has never been identified. He also suffered from poor health that may have stemmed from rheumatic fever and other childhood illnesses. He was treated for these illnesses with laudanum, which he then developed a lifelong opium addiction.
