Telling your employer about your disability is a personal choice. No matter what you decide to do (tell or not tell), you need to know the answers to these questions: What skills do you need for the job? Does your disability prevent you from performing the job

requirements? If yes, could accommodations make the job doable for you? If so, what accommodations would you need?

Remember, you must disclose your disability if you expect your employer to provide accommodations.

Not only provides you with rights at school. ADA also affects you on the job. This Act prevents employers from asking you about disability on job applications or during job interviews.

It is ILLEGAL for for employers to ask questions about disability on job applications and/or during interviews. Ex: Do you have a disability? List and describe. This job requires written correspondence. Do you have any

type of reading or writing disability I should know about? Do you have a disability that affects you behavior? We like

to keep things calm around here. You will be in direct contact with customers everyday. Do

you have any type of disability that will make difficult for you to do?

Have you ever undergone a psychiatric evaluation? What were the results?

Do you have asthma or high blood pressure?

Employers CAN ask you specific questions about your skills and abilities required to perform the job. Ex: This job requires you to drive, is there anything that

would prevent you from doing that? You will be spending hours at a computer every day. Is

there anything that would prevent you from doing so? This job involves complex math regularly. Would this be a

problem for you? You may have to lift heavy objects on the job. Will this be a

problem for you?

+At postsecondary schools

You do have rights to accommodations at colleges/universities.

You do not have rights to modifications at colleges/universities.

You do not have an IEP or IEP team in college. BUT there are people who can help you in the Office of Disability Support Services. The name of this office may vary depending on the school,

but it should be similar.

Assists students with disabilities to make sure that students have access to reasonable accommodations.

LAW: IDEA

Schools must identify students with disabilities

Student progress is monitored by the school

Students have an IEP/IEP team to make sure they receive modifications and accommodations

LAW: ADA, Section 504

Students must self-disclose their disability to the school

Student is responsible for monitoring his/her progress

Student is responsible for seeking out accommodations
