Create a voice with a firm foundation that can take you in any direction and any kind of music. In an atmosphere of safety and respect, together we will work on the breathing and body support that will inform your singing for the rest of your life. Students of varying levels are welcome, including intermediate and advanced players. Each student will have access to their own piano during the class session. A combination of performance skills, listening skills and expressive techniques will be emphasized. Students will learn how to perform using a collaborative approach to the piano. STRINGSINSTRUMENTS AND MATERIALS: String instrument sizes fit the student, who should be measured by the teacher or the strings retailer. For violin or cello rentals, contact Stamell Strings at (845) 337-3030, Amadeus Strings at (845) 486-7617 or Joseph Regh Violins at (845) 297-2521. Rental allows you to change violin size if the student is a growing child, and rental fees may often be applied to purchase when ready. Some dealers allow trade-ins on purchased instruments as well. Purchase of low-cost music textbooks may be needed, depending on the instructor and class.

VIOLIN FOR BEGINNERS MUX 120 / AGES 4-8 / 6 SessionsIncludes parental instruction. This small group class consists of six group sessions. This class is for young children who want to begin to learn to play the violin. Goals are to develop focus, balance, rhythm and musical sense in a loving and supportive environment and to prepare parent and child for successful violin study. Instruments required by the third session. It is recommended that students register for a 4/30-minute lesson package in addition to this group class. VIOLIN FOR BEGINNERS MUX 621 / AGES 12 TO ADULT / 6 SessionsDrawing a sound from a stringed instrument is a uniquely satisfying experience. Anyone curious about the violin – whether you studied as a child or are a complete beginner- is welcome to join. Learn the natural motions that let you produce beautiful sound with ease. By the end of the class you’ll be playing some of your favorite songs! Required Materials: “Artistry in Strings, Book 1 (Violin)” by Robert S. VIOLIN FOR INTERMEDIATE PLAYERS MUX 622 / AGES 14 TO ADULT / 6 SessionsThe Intermediate class is for students who are able to play comfortably in first position, and have a good grasp of note-reading and rhythm. Repertoire will include ensemble pieces chosen by the instructor according to the number and level of the participants. Some examples from previous classes include duets from the Baroque period and those by Bela Bartok (two or more per part). ENSEMBLESCHORUS MUX 703 / Ages 14 - Adult / 15 SessionsAre you a soprano? Alto? Tenor? Bass? Sing in a variety of musical styles from contemporary choral pieces to choral classics like Mendelssohn’s “Elijah.” This large ensemble of 40+ members is open to everyone who has had some singing experience and would like an opportunity to improve their ability to blend, phrase and work together in a musical group. ORCHESTRA MUX 700 / Ages 14 - Adult / 16 SessionsDo you like Beethoven, Brahms, and Wagner as well as Broadway musical medleys? The group is open to individuals playing flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, violin, viola, cello, double bass, or percussion at a NYSSMA level 4 or higher. Members are expected to supply their own instruments in working condition. In partnership with the Mid-Hudson Community orchestra this group usually has 50+ members. There will be at least 2-3 public performances including the final performance on Wednesday, May 6 at 7:30pm. GUITAR ENSEMBLE MUX 730 / 14 Sessions This course is designed for musicians and requires prior knowledge and ability to read music. Students rehearse and perform guitar ensemble music. The course is open to students who play acoustic guitar. There is one on-campus concert, and additional performances may be required. Students are expected to supply their own instruments in working condition. New students must send a 1-2 minute video of their playing to Dan Stevens at [email protected] or arrange a brief appointment to ensure they are at the appropriate level for this class.10 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. (R) 1/16-4/23 DCC D. COMMUNITY JAZZ ENSEMBLE MUX 540 / Ages 14 - Adult / 12 Sessions Explore the world of jazz improvisation with an ensemble. Students will increase technical facility on their instrument while achieving interactive ensemble playing, including harmonic and rhythmic exploration. Available to intermediate and advanced players of any instrument, from junior high school age through adult. Interested new students, please contact Laura Doe at [email protected] or (845) 431-8916. CHAMBER MUSIC ENSEMBLES & COMBOS / All AgesDo you want to sing in a barbershop quartet, play in a jazz combo or string quartet or rock out with a band? Chamber Music Ensembles and Combos are available in any style or instrumentation from classical/jazz to contemporary/pop styles. If you are interested in creating a group or have one already formed contact Laura Doe at [email protected] or (845) 431-8916. All members of the group will register for a 30-minute lesson package and then pool their lesson time to meet once a week with a professional coach. Date/time of lessons to be determined between group members and professional coach. 2 members = 1 hour per week / 3 members = 1.5 hours per week / 4+ members = 2 hours per week

MUSICAL PLAYTIME Free Class for Ages 3 - 8!Calling moms and dads: Want to take one of our group classes for adults? No one to watch the kids while you’re jamming with us? Instead of paying a babysitter, drop your kids off with our FREE Musical Playtime Group. This group runs at the same time as your group class of choice, subject to availability. Your children will receive mentored supervision by a college music major pursuing music education, in a music-oriented playtime group that includes musical games, rated-G kids movies, and more activities for their musical enjoyment and your peace of mind. Each Playtime Group has at most a 1:4 child-to-aide ratio. COLLEGE COURSESOpen to community members ages 14-Adult This spring we are offering the opportunity for community members to take college music classes alongside DCC credit students at a discounted price on a first-come, first-serve basis with faculty from DCC’s Music Performance Certificate program. On Monday, December 30, those on the waitlist will be contacted in first-come, first-serve order: the number of unfilled seats left in each college class will determine how many community members are invited to register. This is a can’t-miss opportunity to take college classes at a discounted price. INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC THEORY MUX 714 / 41 SessionsThis course is designed for both musicians and non-musicians. It is a preparatory course for students with little or no prior training in music theory or music reading. The class provides students with a solid foundation in the rudiments of music notation and aural awareness including pitch, accidentals, rhythm, clefs, major and minor scales, and key signatures.
