Introduction As part of the 50th Anniversary of the EMC Society, an analysis of the IEEE Transactions on EMC for the first fifty years was undertaken. This analysis con- sisted of reviewing the past papers from the IEEE Transactions on EMC and tabu- lating the number of times a paper had been referenced by other papers in the IEEE Transactions on EMC. The Most-Referenced Paper was enti- tled “Transient Response of Multicon- ductor Transmission Lines Excited by a Nonuniform Electromagnetic Field” by A.K. Agrawal, H.J. Price, and S.H. Gur- baxani. It was published in Volume EMC-22, No. 2, May 1980. It was also republished in the 2007 Sum- mer issue of the EMC Society Newsletter. In this issue, we are pleased to reprint the Second Most-Referenced IEEE Trans- actions on EMC paper entitled “Absorb- ing Boundary Conditions for the Finite- Difference Approximation of the Time- Domain Electromagnetic Field Equa- tions.” It was first published in Volume EMC-23, No. 4, November 1981. The author was Gerrit Mur who was with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Nottingham, Nottingham, England when he wrote the paper in 1981. He transferred to the Laboratory of Electro- magnetic Research, Department of Elec- trical Engineering, Delft University of Technology, PO Box 5031, 2600 GA Delft, The Netherlands shortly after hav- ing the paper accepted by the IEEE Trans- actions on EMC. 39 Special 50th Anniversary Section Second Most-Referenced IEEE Transactions on EMC Paper Dan Hoolihan, Associate Editor Chairman, EMC Society 50th Anniversary and History Committee

As part of the 50th Anniversary of the EMC Society ofthe IEEE, a 50th Anniversary lapel pin was flown onthe NASA Space Shuttle. This was arranged through

NASA by co-author Bob Scully, a member of the EMC SocietyBoard of Directors, who made the necessary arrangementsthrough appropriate channels.

The designated lapel pin was placed on Space Shuttle Pro-gram Flight STS-118, and was flown between 8 August and 21August 2007.

The pin will be mounted on a plaque and presented to IEEEfor display at its headquarters in Piscataway, New Jersey. It isplanned to officially present the plaque to the President of theIEEE in the near future, and it is hoped that the plaque willreside in a prominent location at IEEE Headquarters.

The EMC Society is enjoying a yearlong celebration of its50th anniversary of its acceptance as a Society in 1957. What agreat way to celebrate this momentous occasion with an out ofthis world voyage into space! EMC
