Water
It is possible to survive for weeks without food, but you cant go more than a few days without
safe drinking water. Make sure that you not only have enough reserves on hand to provide for
you and your family, but also ensure that you have identified and located a source for new water
if your supplies run out. A rainwater collector, stream, well or even distillation system can do the
trick, but it is important to find at least one other resource.

First AidLearning how to administer first aid is an important and essential life-saving skill that has a
good chance of coming in handy during any survival situation. A first-aid kit is completely
useless unless someone knows how to treat injuries with the items. Consider taking a training
course and teach other family members how to perform basic procedures. Purchase or create
your own first-aid kit and make sure that it includes the following minimal items. You can adapt
and modify this list if you want to add things that are not included, and remember that access
to the right tools, supplies along with the necessary skills can save lives.

Individual NeedsEveryone has unique needs that need to be considered when stocking up on disaster prepared-
ness supplies. It is important to remember simple and everyday things that we take for granted
that may be hard to live without in a disaster situation. Checking and double checking to en-
sure that they are included can make life a lot easier when facing a long period without access
to outside resources. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list, rather a few suggestions, and it
is up to you to think of and account for things that you need in order to keep in your stockpile
or Bug-Out-Bag.

CommunicationOur wired world can come to a screeching halt in the blink of an eye following a disaster. Mo-
bile communication, Internet access and the ability to receive digital information via television
or radio may become impossible. Even a simple power outage can knock out a cell phone tow-
er or prevent us from charging our batteries. Being prepared and taking extra steps to ensure
that you can listen and communicate with the outside world is essential in any survival situation.
The following item is an excellent example of a practical, reliable
and effective resource that can be used during a crisis. It is a
combination flashlight, NOAA and AM/FM radio that includes
a digital tuner. This particular model includes multiple charging
options that include solar and external power, and it can also be
used to charge a cell phone.

snacks, reading material and even the occasional drink and the passing the time waiting for the
all-clear will be much, much more bearable. This is especially true if you have kids, and always
