Hospitality: If your last name begins with R through Z please bring a treat to share at the General Meeting.

Before our meeting on Wednesday, please join us at Ocean View Bar & Grill, located at 3826 Ocean View Blvd. in Montrose at 5 PM for dinner. (RSVP to Susan Edwards so we have the correct number for reservations.) Everyone is welcome!

Norah McMeeking: Bella Bella Mosaics

Coming from a family of printers, sign painters and seamstresses, Norah states

that quilting is her destiny. She studied graphic arts at Rhode Island School of

Design, and quilting proved to be a perfect marriage of graphics and sewing.

Norah has taught quilting at the adult education division of the community

college in Santa Barbara since 1991. Because her students attended class year

after year and wanting to offer different classes, she studied practically every

quilting trend, fad, shortcut and technique.

She has exhibited in local and juried shows including Pacific International,

Road to California, Quilts of UK, AQS in Paducah, etc. Her speaking engagements include numerous

guilds in California, nearby states, as well as England where she lives several months out of the year.

And she has taught at Road to California and Empty Spools Seminars, Asilomar.

With the help of C&T Publishing, Norah has published Bella Bella Quilts: Stunning Designs from Italian

Mosaics. Join us for Norah’s lecture titled Bella Bella Mosaics.

If any of you are interested in participating in this pro-ject to restore our library access, please let me know. When shared among 3 or 4 people, each person will only have a couple meetings a year to staff the table. Selections may be made based upon the speaker’s topic or a monthly theme. As in everything else, no job is too large when shared among friends. I’m sure we will all enjoy being able to take advantage of our extensive Library once again. A huge “Thank You!” goes out to Sharon Camping and Linda Emory for hosting the WAC Luncheon in September. It was a huge success, thanks to all the members of the WACky Quilters who helped to set up, serve the meal and dessert and then clean up afterward. It’s a wonderful group of quilters which includes many members of our Guild. These mem-bers joined WAC in order to benefit the Guild by al-lowing access to a wonderful meeting place, but have found a special camaraderie in this growing group. What a fun day! If you would care to join us, let Sha-ron or Linda know. Don’t forget - we need lots of member quilts entered for our next show. Use this month to begin finalizing your plans, to allow plenty of time to complete your quilts. Quilt Entry begins on December 1st, so I’m planning to get them done & out of the way before the Holidays begin. Remember, GQG members may enter up to 3 quilts (in 3 different categories) made within the past 2 years. For more information and forms, please go to the website - http://www.glendalequiltguild.org One last note: Fight SABLE Syndrome (Stash Accu-mulation Beyond Life Expectancy)! Make lots of quilts! See you at the next meeting. Until then, Happy Quilting! Sandy

The President’s Block

It was a super hot September! I hope you all stayed indoors to keep cool during that awful heat. One thing I will never get used to in SoCal is the HOT weather. I tend to dream of cool, clear water, palm trees swaying in the breeze and white sand . . . and temperatures in the low 80s! I can dream, can’t I? Now, we are facing October, with pumpkins, cos-tumes for the kids (of all ages), Halloween parties and candy corn. Where I grew up in New Jersey, the air is cooling, while the leaves have changed colors and are beginning to fall from the trees. It’s time to get ready to stock firewood, put up the storm windows and dig out the winter coats and boots to get ready for cold weather and snow. Just talking about it reminds me of the smells and sights of Fall. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we will soon begin to experience Fall ourselves. Those of you who attended Marcia Stein’s work-shop will agree that it was lots of fun and very informative. Many won-derful photographs were shared and by the end of the day, we were all well on our way to creating a quilt based upon our favorite photos. We’ll see how many make it to “Show & Tell” this month. October’s speaker is Norah McMeeking, who will discuss “Bella Bella Mosaics”. Her workshop, enti-tled “Stacked & Stacked Some More”, will demon-strate the technique of precision piecing stacked layers, providing many variations to make stunning quilts. Reserve your spot quickly. This one will fill up! During the last meeting, I discussed the possibility of a group of members getting together to rejuve-nate our Library as a group effort.

As announced at the last general membership meeting, there has been a change in the show plans. Because of a date conflict,

there will not be a Thread Lecture from Bob at Superior Threads but they do plan on being with us for 2016. With a classroom

now open on Saturday we had to act quick and are pleased to announce that Sharla Hicks will be back

teaching her Zentangles, Anything Is Possible, One Stroke At A Time workshop. We took her medita-

tive doodling class last April and just loved it. Not just fun to draw, the lines and doodles also gener-

ate creative quilting options as fillers and backgrounds. And the patterned drawing techniques are

perfect for your non-quilting friends too. Zentangles are a relaxing way to unwind at the end of a busy

day or an invigorating start to a creative day.

There is also another exciting change to the workshops. Laurel Anderson has just completed a new

appliqué design which introduces the next generation of appliqué methods. In this new class, Gerani-

ums, you will experience Terial Magic appliqué that mimics needle turn plus raw edge with fusible

web. All the geranium petals are cut with the Silhouette CAMEO and shaped over marbles to give a

wonderful 3D effect. If you have a

Silhouette CAMEO or Brother Scan-N-Cut, troubleshooting

tips and designing tricks are included in the class. If you would

like to try before you buy this is the class for you.

As always, email us at [email protected] with

any questions or comments.

are welcome!

Quilt Show Workshop Spotlight

We are pleased to welcome Melissa Corry, a

modern quilt pattern designer and teacher, at

our 2015 Quilt Show. Melissa will teach 2

half-day workshops on Friday, March 13.

Her patterns are new, adorable and modern.

Friday morning, Melissa will be teaching the

Wonky Irish Chain. It is a modern twist on a classic Single

Irish Chain. Varied sized print pieces

link together to make up a Single Irish

Chain that will keep your eyes mov-

ing. This pattern is perfect for clean-

ing out that scrap drawer. And with 4

size options, you are sure to find one

that fits your needs. It goes together

fast and is so much fun to piece. If you

are looking for something fun and

fast, this is the class for you.

Friday afternoon, the workshop will

be In Your Neighborhood. This is a

great modern design that really grabs

the eye. The big blocks make a big

statement and the floating layout al-

lows for a lot of movement. And 3

size options allow you to make the

quilt you want. If you like a bit of

modern flair, then sign on up! We are

going to have a great time.

From Esther Norbut:

I've been reading about Fidget Quilts which are small - maybe 15 inch quilts - for dementia patients. Also called dementia quilts. Various textures and trinkets are attached to the quilts that would keep a patient in-terested. They sound like fun. Here is a website that talks about them. There was also an article in a recent Quilter's Newsletter. http://www.quiltersclubofamerica.com/blogs/nancyevanswildbluenet/archive/2012/08/28/quot-fidget-quilts.aspx

Workshops are 10am – 4pm at GWAC. $10.00 each. Sign up with Workshop Chairs. DATES:

JULY 26, 2014; AUGUST 23, 2014;SEPTEMBER 27, 2014 OCTOBER 25, 2014;NOVEMBER 23, 2014;DECEMBER (date tbd)

Instructions have been posted on the Guild website for those who choose to work independently.

Below is a picture of the sample blocks in four sizes pro-

vided by Nan Maples. The finished blocks are laid out to

make the design in the concept drawing to the right!

2015 Quilt Show Merchandise: After the Show committee agreed on the style of

bags/totes and water bottles, they were ordered and

are now here for your purchase at a special preview

price of $6 each. After the December meeting the

price is $8 each or both for $15.

The bag/tote is different than years past, popular

with today’s youth, can be used as a light weight

backpack, and has an outside pocket and netted

area which holds the water bottle. Do not let the

small size fool you. It is perfect for hand projects

and for carrying special items tucked into a really

big bag.

The 20 ounce PBA-free water bottle fits nicely in

the netted pocket in the bag. Or carry it using the

lid hook or its shapely curved body. The lip of the

top accommodates ice cubes, which is a huge plus

on these hot days when we need cool hydration.

The plastic straw does need to be attached to the

lid, but does not interfere in closing the bottle that

is filled with ice cubes and water.

The red color stands out to help in advertising our

guild and upcoming show. To those who have pur-

chased theirs already, thank you for supporting the

guild.

Get involved with YOUR 2016 Opportunity quilt! Think spices, caravans, the Silk Road, India & Scheherazade. We’re going for a quilt with a scrappy look and need your help. Please comb through your stash & donate BATIK fabrics with:

patterns of all types – stripes, dots, geometrics, and florals in highly saturated colors, inspired by spices, herbs, foods & even a few drinks.

Reds – tomato, watermelon, rhubarb, burgundy, paprika & chili powder

Oranges – carrot, pumpkin, peach, mango, apricot & tangerine

Yellows – mustard, lemon, corn, buttermilk, honey, turmeric & saffron

Greens – olive, avocado, spinach, lime, pistachio, sage & cilant-ro

Purples – lavender, plum, eggplant & grape

Browns – cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, caramel, cocoa, café au lait & latte

Blues – turquoise, sky & navy (sorry, but with the exception of blueberries, blue corn and blue potatoes – which some people argue are all really purple – there really aren’t any blue foods)

And, of course, any BATIKS that feature combinations of these col-ors! Please bring your BATIKS to the October meeting – ideally a fat quarter or more, but we’ll also happily accept large scraps – and you’ll receive an extra raffle ticket for the 2016 opportunity quilt. Any unused donated fabric will go to Loving Hands. Thank you!

Sunshine and Shadows

Glad to see Don Beld without the cast on his arm. He says it

will probably never be 100% but the good news is he can still

sew.

It was good to see Sue Williams out and about after a lengthy

recovery from another back surgery.

Vi Bos had cataract surgery and is doing well.

Betty Fisher has recovered from a broken leg that required

surgery and some physical therapy.

Congratulations to Alice Turner for winning seven ribbons at

the L.A. County Fair!

Rasa Read has had a quilt accepted at Pacific International

Quilt Festival in Santa Clara.

Lastly, it is with sadness that I report that Susan Wiebush lost her

husband and Michelle Shook’s father-in-law passed away. Our

sympathy goes out to Susan and Michelle and their families.

Please remember to let me know if you have any news, whether it

be sunshine or shadow.
