We opened our doors over three years ago asthe first Recovery College in Ireland (up Mayo).I am delighted that at present there are fiveRecovery Colleges up and running in differentparts of the country. This surely is a reflectionthat using education as a tool for Recoveryreally works. I have witnessed this over and overagain during the last three years and it isconfirmed by the experiences and testimoniesof our student body.
Again I want to welcome new and returningstudents.
I am confident that you find courses in thisprospectus that will be beneficial for yourjourney as a person with self experience, afamily member/friend, a professional or simplyas an individual with an interest in MentalHealth.
I look forward to meeting you
Jutta
ALL ABOUT RECOVERY: INFORMATION, SKILLS ANDTOOLS
Let’s talk about Recovery
This course will start with the attempt to define what HEALTH actually is andthen explore RECOVERY in Mental Health, historical context and definitionsfrom different perspectives.
Over the 3 sessions we will present and discuss tasks, conditions and tools,as indicated by international research. The news is good! As always we arehoping for a lively conversation and fresh thinking.
Family and Recovery
When a loved one becomes unwell it can have a huge effect on familymembers and/or friends.
This course will explore the implications and discuss pathways for wellnessand empowerment. We will introduce the existing support systems in CountyMayo.
About Stress, Stress Management, Motivation and Resilience
Excessive STRESS is universally accepted as an obstacle to wellness, therefore it well worth it to have a closer look. We will discuss definitions, possible causes and symptoms. This will be followed by discussing aspects ofStress Management and strategies to help us to cope better with the ups anddowns of life. Life happens and can bring unexpected challenges, which canfeel discouraging and devastating. The trick is to foster RESILIENCE andbounce back. We will look at this important aspect. Everybody can feel a lackof MOTIVATION sometimes. This part will explore factors and ingredients toget us back on the road.
Volunteering
Many people describe volunteering as a great tool for Recovery, to get up andgoing and start again. In this session we will look at the ins and outs, opportunities and how to make the best of this experience.
Back to Education
Due to a diagnosis of mental health issues a person’s life can beseverely interrupted and sometimes it is hard to imagine how to pickup the pieces and move forward. In this course we will present andexplore the possibilities of going back to education, an option that agood few of our previous students opted for very successfully.
The 12 steps demystified
Ever wondered what the 12 step programmes like AA (AlcoholicsAnonymous), NA (Narcotics Anonymous, ALANON (for peopleaffected by an addiction of a relative or friend) etc. are all about. Thismodule will introduce you to its origins, underlying belief systems andpurpose for recovery. We will try to lift the veil of mystery and arehoping for a lively discussion.
Let’s WRAP
WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) was developed as a tool tosupport people to become more resourceful and self-directed on theirjourney. Many now feel that everybody should have a WRAP plan. Inthis introductory session we will discuss this simple, but effectivesystem which could help you to identify triggers, solutions, earlywarning signs and a crisis plan to help you get back on track.
The Mental Health Act
By popular demand we will introduce the legislation, as outlined in theMental Health Act of Ireland in some detail and discuss its implicationsfor the individual
Self-Advocacy and Empowerment
Recovery demands the active participation of the person – toarticulate needs, wishes and wants – to speak up for self (self-advocacy). In order to take back control we need to know how. Therefore we are aiming to shed some light on the termEmpowerment from various angles.
Spirituality and Mindfulness
This course will explore the term “Spirituality” as a very personal yet universaltheme. How can we tap into our inner resources to become more alive, awareand real? Recovery is the journey of Discovery and recently “Mindfulness” hasbecome a much discussed practice to help people to centre themselves in dayto day living. We will present and discuss origins, background and theories andwill introduce some very basic tools. Please share your experiences andthoughts with the group if you feel comfortable to do so! Open to everyoneregardless of background, faith, belief or non belief.
GENERAL MENTAL HEALTH AND MEDICAL ISSUES
Anxiety and Panic Attacks
This course was put together on request of many previous students. Anxietyplays a big role in most mental health difficulties, We want to discuss symptomsand underlying causes and discuss some tools to manage these sometimescrippling feelings and reactions.
Living with Depression and beyond
This course will explore the nature and experience of Depression and considerits wide-ranging impact on all aspects of life. We will reflect on diagnosis andmedication as well as alternative practical steps that some people found helpfulin managing this experience. Please feel free to share if you feel comfortableto do so.
Supporting people with Eating Disorders
Some students of the College – people with self experience and familymembers, as well as professionals – asked if we could run a course on EatingDisorders, as these conditions seem to be on the increase and usually start ata young age. We will provide an overview of what Eating Disorders are, fromthe professional, self-experience and family/friends perspective. We will giveinformation on treatments and embark on a discussion about how best tosupport people with these challenges.
Living with Bi-polar and beyond
Living with bi-polar can be an emotional rollercoaster. We will talkabout diagnosis, medication and tool that claim to be effective. Thiscourse might help to develop strategies to take back control of theindividual’s life and manage challenges. If you have self experienceand feel ok about it please share your story with us.
Let’s talk about BPD
BPD stands for Borderline Personality Disorder, which is a muchdisputed and misunderstood term. What does it mean for theindividual? We want to shed some light on diagnostic criteria, what itis, what it is not, and discuss some options and therapies for peoplewith this label.
Understanding Self Harm
Evidence shows that Self Harm is on the increase, worryinglybecoming more evident in a growing number of very young peopletoo. We try to shed some light on this phenomenon, exploring possiblecausations, treatments and approaches. This is an attempt to fostera deeper understanding of this subject. Please note that this coursecontains some material which is emotional by nature.
Understanding Suicide
Partners and students of the Mayo Recovery College have expressedthe need to address the subject of Suicide. The statistics show aworrying trend and it is a subject that many people find uncomfortableto talk about. This is an attempt to start the conversation and discusssome myths and attitudes surrounding this subject. Please note thatthis course contains some material which is emotional by nature.
Living with Psychosis/Schizophrenia and beyond
This course will start to explore the different aspects of this experience – fromdiagnosis and medication to Recovery tools for self-management.Psychosis/Schizophrenia does not have to stop people from living a fulfillingand meaningful life. This course could be a step towards developing effectivestrategies for managing symptoms and ways to take back control and managechallenges. Students with self experience are very welcome to share their storyif they feel safe to do so. We will also have a glimpse at the value of earlyintervention and introduce the local “Hearing Voices” group.
Let’s talk about Nutrition and Exercise
These two terms seem to crop up everywhere in connection with wellbeing.Let’s take a look at the theories and research behind it. Please come alongand share your own thoughts with us.
