TWO Journal Entries for EACH prompt

PROMPT I- (two separate entries each!)

“THE ADVENTURES OF LEWIS & CLARK & THE CORPS OF DISCOVERY.”

Chose a character and write from their P.O.V.

Using a journal format (entries note the day, month, and year and are written in the first person format), describe what happened to you and the other members of the expedition. Try to be as accurate as possible about names, places, events, animals you encounter, Native American tribes you meet, and how you travel at different stages of the journey. Don’t forget to include battles, troubles on the rivers, dangerous animals, the weather, food shortages, insects, and all the hardships of the journey.

PROMPT II- (two separate entries each!)

“LETTERS HOME”

Most Americans, including the men on the expedition, had received little or no schooling. Lewis had a few years at local schools, and Clark may have been taught the basics of reading and writing by his older brothers. Neither man had been to college. Spelling and grammar had not been standardized yet, so people often spelled words different ways. The word mosquitoes is spelled 15 different ways in journals of the expedition. Usage for periods, capitals, and commas varied as well.

“CULTURES ON THE MOVE”

The Lewis & Clark Expedition involved many different cultures meeting and reacting with each other. Each Native American tribe had its own cultural heritage, beliefs, reactions to new things, and behaviors. There were also French fur trappers who lived with Native Americans and often assumed some of the Native American cultures. The members of the expedition were usually English-speaking frontiersmen, many of whom had experience in frontier and Native American conflicts. York was unique. He was a black slave. Many Native Americans had never seen a black man and they were often fascinated with him.

PROMPT IV- - (two separate entries each!)

“SCIENCE & DISCOVERY” (“PLANTS & ANIMALS”)

Write two entries based on your observations about the plants and animals you encounter. Your descriptions should include colors, behaviors, estimates measurements, shapes, and comparisons to other plants and animals that you know. Include a sketch of either an entire item or just specific parts of the plant or animal.
