* THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

JUNE 25, 2017 Order of Worship 10:00 a.m.

Thank you for making sure your cell phone is off during the worship hour.

THE GATHERING Beth Waltemath Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

THE PRELUDE Air Jean Phillipe Rameau

*THE CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; People: To declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night. Leader: To the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre. People: For you O Lord have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I will sing for joy. Leader: Let us worship God, who has created, redeemed and sustained us. Amen. - Psalm 92

THE CALL TO CONFESSION

THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, we are enmeshed in sin. At times we are not even aware of the implications of our actions. We think to ourselves that we have not sinned, but the truth is not in us. We think to ourselves that if we have avoided certain temptations, we have triumphed over evil, but we lack understanding. We fail to realize that simply living in a sinful world makes us sinners. So forgive us, we pray, again and again, and turn our hearts, again and again, that we might seek you and your holiness. Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray, Amen.

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. People: Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Leader: When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. Believe the promise of the Gospel: People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - John 3:16-17 *THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 376) Breathe, O breathe thy loving Spirit into every troubled breast! Let us all in thee inherit, let us find the promised rest. Take away the love of sinning: Alpha and Omega be; end of faith, as its beginning, set our hearts at liberty.

*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all! People: And also with you.

*THE HYMN 298 There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy IN BABILONE

THE ANTHEM True Light Keith Hampton This little light of mine I’m gonna let it shine. Almighty God is light. He lives in us as True Light. In the beginning, out of the darkness, God created True Light. He lives in us as True Light. Don’t let the light that you’ve given me die, and don’t desert my mind. But let the one who serves you praise you again and again. He lives in us as True Light. You are the one who judges right from wrong. Your glory excites no envy. But let the one who serves you praise you again and again. He lives in us as True Light. This little light of mine I’m gonna let it shine. Everywhere I go, I want the world to know God gave the world True Light! Lenna Turner, Linda Johnson, Peter Chatel, soloists

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY

Welcome to worship at Morningside Presbyterian Church.

Baron Mullis, Senior Pastor is our preacher and Beth Waltemath, Associate for Mission and Faith Developement is our liturgist.

Large print hymnals and Bibles as well as hearing aids are available; ushers will gladly assist. Please complete the information in the Friendship Pad at the end of the pews and pass the pads down and back again during the Concerns portion of worship. Children are welcomed and encouraged in worship every Sunday. Worship bags for children can be found in the Narthex. Those who wish to attend Sunday School may do so after the Peace of Christ. Childcare for 0-23 months is in Room 105, and Room 012 for 2 and 3 year olds. Pre-K/K are in room 001.

We’re pleased to announce our newest members: Erika Schenk, Will Owens, Georgine and Bienfait Kinumbe-Bauma, Ken Yunker, Kathleen and Knox Wilmer, and Courtney and Neale Nickels. Please help us in welcoming our newest addition to the Morningside family.

First Friends is a program that will pair current MPC members with those who have recently joined our church family. After someone joins the church, you as a First Friend will keep the new members informed about special events and programs the church offers. Also you will introduce our new friends to other members of the congregation.

If you or your family would be interested in participating or learning more about the program, please give your name to one of the deacons. Today the Deacons have on lovely nametags made by our 4 and 5-year-old friends.

Would you like fresh flowers in worship? Would you like to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, new baby or the life of a friend? If so then please see the sign up sheet for flowers on the

bulletin board outside of the Session Room. Pick the date, sign your name, write your email and phone number or contact Georgia Marshall, [email protected], or Lynn Daniel, [email protected], for details.

Our pastor Rev. Dr. Baron Mullis has written a book titled Like An Ever-flowing Stream: Sermons of Call, Response, Vocation, and Love, that will be available this month and next. Be sure to join us for his book-signing party during our after-worship so-cial hour today.

As families move, Morningside Presbyterian Preschool has had openings become available for one 3-year-old student and one PreK student. Tell your friends and neighbors to grab them up quickly. Contact Melinda Sandkam at 404-685-8758 or [email protected] today. We also have a few openings for each week of summer camp still available.

Next week, Gail Kitchens will lead the lectionary reading and the discussion that follows. CHILDREN

Children will learn about welcoming everyone.

The Kinumbe-Bauma family enjoys joining us, their family, on Sundays. The Sign-Up Genius has been updated to include dates in July. Since the worship service changed to 10 a.m., the pick-up time will be 9:30 a.m. Please consider giving the Kinumbe-Bauma family a ride and helping them get to know one more member of their church community. http: www.signupgenius.com/go/409044ca5aa28a3ff2-rides.

The beauty about Montreat is that it offers a unique experience that we don’t want you to pass up. Montreat is certainly the place to be to relax your mind, body and spirit. Our retreat will be October 20 - 22. The Reverend Paul Timothy Roberts Sr., President of Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary in Atlanta will be our guest speaker. If you would like to register, please pick up a registration form in the Narthex and return your completed form with an attached check to the office.

Join us for Donut Days each Sunday (excluding July 2) with Mardee beginning at 9:15 a.m. Children’s Ministries will provide light refreshments in the playground and picnic area so that Mardee can meet the families of the church and get to

know the children better. Families are encouraged to join us for at least one of these but are welcome to attend any or all. It’s great time for children to get a snack and run off some steam before worship at 10 a.m.

This year’s gala is right around the corner. Prepare your calendars for two opportunities to watch Morningside Sings Musical Magic, featuring music from a variety of Disney movies and shows on Saturday, August 19 and Sunday, August 20. Derek Matthews and Jeff Peters are currently preparing to bring you an unforgettable show. Many of the congregation are generously contributing time and talent to bring this year’s benefit production to life. We will continue our tradition of asking members to consider joining our 2017 Morningside Sings Patrons Circle to ensure that production expenses are covered and that we reach our goal of making significant donations to our music programs and mission ministries. Those who contribute $100 or more will enjoy a patrons reception on Thursday, July 13 and be the very first to preview select magical musical moments from this year’s gala.

Volunteers are needed on Saturday, July 15 for painting and ceiling tile replacement at the new Mommy and Me facility at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church. Mommy and Me is a respected women’s refugee literacy program which also provides child care and enrichment while the students are learning. This is an easy project for adults and teenagers. Help us secure a place in this program for our newest member Georgine Kinumbe-Bauma. Contact Holly Campbell [email protected] for details.
