The Human Body has better than ___________ Muscles.

…and make up about ______________of a persons body weight.Muscles work with _________ to

support and move the body. They actually pull on the ___________ in order to move the body.

There are Three (3) types of muscle in the human body…

1. Smooth Muscle or Involuntary MuscleExample: _________________________

Smooth Muscles work by themselves and you cannot control them.

How many Smooth Muscles can you name?(Talk to the people around you and see if

you can name 2 or 3)

Esophagus & Stomach

2. The muscle that makes up the Heart is called ________________________

Another name for Cardiac Muscle is ______________________________

Just like smooth muscles, myocardium or cardiac muscle works by itself (Involuntary).

3. ____________________ are Voluntary muscles, which means that they don’t work unless your Brain tells them to.

So these are the muscles that make up the _________________________.

So, Looking at the human body from the Anatomical position…

…the MIDLINE of the body, divides the body in two, vertically!

Skeletal Muscles

Musculoskeletal System

Muscles are connected to bones by tough cord-like tissues called…

…TENDONS Tendons allow muscles to pull

on the bones for movement. Wiggle your fingers and watch…

Let’s look at some of the Major Muscles and where they’re at in the body…

__________________ and the tendons of the Rotator Cuff, help make up the Shoulder.

The ________________ are antagonistic, which means they work opposite of the Triceps.

The ___________________ Muscles are found on each side of your chest. They are usually called _________ for short.

THE DELTOIDS

BICEPS

PECTORALIS

PECS

Below the Pecs , down under the Rib Cage are your ____________________ or _____________. Most people don’t understand that when these muscles are strong, so is your back.

Your _________________ or Quads for short, are your thigh muscles. Many athletes develop large, strong Quads.

Your _______________________ is the largest single muscle in the human body. The Glutes help in back stabilization, hip support, and speed .

Rectus Abdominus Abdominals (Abs)

Quadriceps

Gluteous Maximus

So, How does the body move?…It moves in very specific

ways!For instance, in Basketball a

_______________ happens when a player catches the ball after a missed shot.

Rebound

Hyperextension is movement that takes a joint beyond it’s normal, anatomical position.

It is sometimes Bad!

But, many times it can be good!

Page 11: The Human Body has better than ___________ Muscles. …and make up about ______________ of a persons body weight. Muscles work with _________ to support

Flexion occurs when a joint’s angle is decreased.

Extension occurs when a joint’s angle is increased.

___________________ is the movement of a limb, joint or body part AWAY from the mid-line of the body.

___________________ is the movement of a limb, joint, or body part TOWARDS the mid-line of the body.

Abduction

Adduction

______________ is the rotary or turning movement of a body part, usually about it’s long axis.

______________ is the circular or conical movement of a body part. It involves all the major movements: Flexion, Extension, Abduction, Adduction, and Rotation.

Why Stretch???Stretching is important for people of all ages!Without regular stretching, your muscles will tighten and the range of motion in your joints will decrease as you age. This can put a damper on active lifestyles and even hinder day-to-day activities

Page 15: The Human Body has better than ___________ Muscles. …and make up about ______________ of a persons body weight. Muscles work with _________ to support

Stretching does not demand a huge time commitment, but it can give you huge results.

Benefits of regular stretching program:

Improves flexibility and range of movement in the joints Reduced risk of injury Reduced muscle tension Enhanced muscular coordination Increased circulation to various parts of the body Increased energy levels (resulting from increased circulation) Delayed onset of muscle fatigue /prevent muscle soreness Enhanced performance in daily life, sports, or other physical

activity Improved posture Mental relaxation

What Influences Your Level of Flexibility?

Four Main Factors Age. Younger people are naturally more flexible than older people. Why? Muscle connective tissues have a natural tendency to shorten and lose elasticity as you age, resulting in muscle tightness and stiffness. Gender. Females tend to be more flexible than males. Exercise history. Active people tend to be more flexible than inactive people. Temperature. When your muscles are warm (whether from exercising or from a warmer environment), they will be more flexible than when they are cold. Why? Increase in muscle temperature decrease muscular resistance, which increases your range of motion.

MUSCLES MUST BE WARMED UP BEFORE YOU STRETCH. Stretching is NOT the first thing you do in a workout.
