WELCOMEWelcome to the fifth Glasgow Film Festival.

The festival has come a long way in a short time. In 2008, we welcomed more than 20,000 people to what has become the fastest growing film event in the United Kingdom. Glasgow is a centre for film production, the base for the nation’s broadcasters, a home for Scottish Screen and BAFTA Scotland and a city with some of the most enthusiastic and adventurous cinemagoers in the land. It has long deserved a truly worldclass film festival and together we are making that dream a reality.

The 2009 festival has something for all tastes from the latest must-see Hollywood triumph to the finest new films from all around the globe. Our retrospective is devoted to the effortless elegance of the late, great Audrey Hepburn. Our special focus on an individual country reveals the wealth of talent in Mexico. The Glasgow Schools Film Festival comes of age with a new title of the Glasgow Youth Film Festival and ambitious plans for workshops and interactive events aimed at capturing the imagination of young film fans and future filmmakers. There is buckets more gore from the FrightFest team, an inspiring celebration of all that is good and exciting about short filmmaking and the sweet sounds of some outstanding music movies. Every aspect of the festival has been modified and expanded for your viewing pleasure.

In times of trouble the cinema is always the first place we turn to for escape. It is a place of daredevil adventure, breathless romance, impossible dreams and happy endings. It can also hold up a mirror to the world, reflecting a piercing reality about everyday lives and telling us extraordinary tales about the joys and woes of being human. This year at Glasgow we hope the films will entertain, astonish, make you think and maybe make you cry but, above all, they will convince you that it is (still) a wonderful life.

VENUESThe diversity of the programme and our venues mirrors the uniqueness of Glasgow’s cultural scene. From the family friendly Cineworld, the beautiful Art Deco surroundings of Glasgow Film Theatre and the underground creative hub of The Arches, the festival now stretches across 11 city centre venues, so there really is something for everyone. SELECTING A FILMThis year’s film selection has been divided into 15 strands to make it easier for you to identify the films which most interest you. Within these strands are our ‘festivals within the festival’: The Youth Film Festival (see p29-30), The Shorts Film Festival (see p23-25) and (new for this year) the Music and Film Festival at The Arches (see p27-28). Each film listing is colour coded and signposted with its appropriate strand throughout this brochure. For full strand descriptions please see p5-6.

We always strive to keep our ticket prices as low as possible and want to make sure the festival is accessible to everyone in terms of cost - we don’t bump up the prices just because its festival time! IN THE LOOpGlasgow born Armando Iannucci is, quite simply, a comic genius. Nobody has done more to elevate the ambition of British comedy. The Thick Of It was his television masterpiece; a bile-ridden satire on the back corridors of British politics that cut so close to the bone that it hurt. In The Loop is not The Thick Of It: The Movie but it is a very close family relative. Tom Hollander’s Simon Foster is the kind of fresh-faced idealist who entered politics because he felt he could make a difference. Now he is secretary of state for the Department of International Development and about to become embroiled in a brewing war in the Middle East. He seems to be against the war but winds up appearing the ideal hawk in the eyes of the American and British governments. Soon he is the toast of Washington, hob-nobbing with Army Major Miller (James Gandolfini) and set to become a helpless innocent thrust into the snake pit of international diplomacy. LAST CHANCE HARVEYYou are never too old to fall in love. That’s the message of this expert romantic comedy featuring the dream team of multi Oscar-winners Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman. Both stars have received Golden Globe nominations for their performances and it is their magical chemistry that makes Last Chance Harvey that little bit special.Hoffman brings all his rumpled charm to bear on the role of Harvey Shine, an aspiring jazz pianist who barely endures his job as a jingle writer. He arrives in London for his daughter’s wedding. VIVA MEXICO!Once upon a time Mexican cinema barely registered on the world’s radar even in the 1950s when the country was making around 150 features each year. Spanish exile Luis Buñuel made waves with his Mexican work, especially Los Olvidados (The Young And The Damned) (1950). Down the years, occasional films did break out and gain attention like Jaime Humberto Hermosillo’s gay charmer Dona Herlinda y su Hijo (Dona Herlinda and Her Son) (1986). Then in 2000 along came Amores Perros (Love’s A Bitch) and Mexican cinema became impossible to ignore.

This year the Glasgow Film Festival will focus on the brightest and the best of the Mexican filmmakers set to follow in the footsteps of Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro. Supported by the Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografia/Mexican Film Institute (a big thanks to Pablo Briseno Galvan and Alejandro Diaz San Vicente) we will screen a range of features and documentaries that reveal a wealth of talent, ambition and names to mark for the future.

An Oscar-winning star and enduring fashion icon, Audrey had the ability to make it all look so effortless.

Of all the great female stars of the 1950s, including Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly, Audrey is the one who remains the most beguiling. The romantic roles in Roman Holiday (1953) and Sabrina (1954) have a tenderness and sincerity that make contemporary romantic comedies look crass and inadequate. Her musicals are simply sublime. The combination of Audrey Hepburn, Fred Astaire, Gershwin tunes and Paris locations makes Funny Face (1957) simply irresistible and the perfect choice for a romantic matinee on St. Valentine’s Day.

ART AT TRAMWAY GFF09 is thrilled to announce a new venue partnership with Tramway. Offering a unique space for contemporary visual and performing arts, Tramway is teaming up with GFF09 to showcase artists working in moving image media and animation.

Tramway are delighted to present the first exhibition of work in Scotland by Sebastian Beurkner, the London based artist considered to be one of the most innovative working with animation at present. For GFF Sebastian will present an artists’ animation programme.

The second event will celebrate the pioneering Black Audio Film Collective who formed in Hackney in 1982 and who were a mix of art, sociology and psychology graduates. Tramway will be showing two of the collectives most seminal film works Handsworth Songs (1986) and Seven Songs for Malcolm X (1993), courtesy of Smoking Dogs Films.

SEBASTIAN BUERKNER EXHIBITIONFor his first solo exhibition in a major UK museum, Buerkner will create a dramatic, large scale installation as a stage for his flash based animations. The artist creates dream like visual narratives which challenge perceptions of space and time and often suggest a duality between the conscious and the subconscious. This process is usually augmented by the use of split screen or multiple, sequential projections which, combined with his use of repetition and stroboscopic editing create an almost hallucinogenic visual experience.

ARTISTS’ ANIMATION pROGRAMME INTRODUCED BY SEBASTIAN BEURKNERSebastian Buerkner will introduce a screening of his recent works alongside animations by leading figures from the avant-garde film movement. The programme will include films by Mary Ellen Bute, Tony & Beverley Conrad and Robert Breer, known for their pioneering animation techniques. Bute made several modernist animations from 1930s onwards which were often broadcast at Radio Music Hall. Tony Conrad is an experimental American artist whose film works are considered to be some of the most influential of the structural film movement and include The Flicker (1966).

THE BLACK AUDIO FILM COLLECTIVE:HANDSWORTH SONGS & SEVEN SONGS FOR MALCOLM X Made in the wake of the 1985 riots in Birmingham and London, Handsworth Songs is considered to be the BAFC’s most widely recognized film. This work contains strong themes of race, class and ideology through its depiction of Caribbean/Asian settlement in 80s Britain. The film has a diverse combination of montage, interview footage, archival material and an experimental soundtrack. Seven Songs for Malcolm X is one of the most stylized works by the BAFC and was revolutionary in bringing elements of feature film production and values into a documentary format. The film looks at the ‘significant silences’ in Malcolm X’s autobiography, such as his Caribbean mother, his ambiguous relationship to America and some of his more controversial activities, such as practice of telepathy whilst in prison.

The first large-scale exhibition devoted to this innovative American architect opens at The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Architecture and Design this March. Tracing Lautner’s work over a 50-year journey, the exhibition features over 70 original drawings and newly commissioned models, alongside short films by award winning filmmaker, Murray Grigor.

Lautner is best known for private commissions such as the Elrod Residence in Palm Springs, featured in the James Bond movie Diamonds are Forever, and Los Angeles’s iconic ‘Chemosphere’.

Between Earth and Heaven: The Architecture of John Launter was organised by the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, in cooperation with The John Lautner Foundation and The Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles. It is made possible through major gifts from the Dunard Fund USA, the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and Frank and Berta Gehry.

THE WRECKING CREWYou heard them playing on the Beach Boys hits, on the Mamas and the Papas’ recordings, on Frank Sinatra records, on Monkees’ singles and they were Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound. They have performed on more number one singles than the Beatles. Hal Blaine, Carole Kaye, Tommy Tedesco, Glen Campbell, Earl Palmer, these are a few members of the Wrecking Crew. Tedesco’s son, Denny Tedesco, knew it well enough to see that it had to be told to more than a small circle of friends. Just prior to his father’s death, he set out to film his father and other members of the Wrecking Crew to capture their story first hand. Thanks to Denny Tedesco
