T.U. PHILOSOPHY
We believe that trout and salmon fishing isn't just fishing for trout and salmon. It's fishing for sport rather than food, where the true enjoyment of the sport lies in the challenge, the lore, the battle of wits, not necessarily the full creel. It's the feeling of satisfaction that comes from limiting your kill instead of killing your limit. It's communing with nature where the chief reward is a refreshed body and a contented soul, where a license is a permit to use not abuse, to enjoy not destroy our cold water fishery. It's subscribing to the proposition that what's good for trout and salmon is good for the fisherman and that managing trout and salmon for themselves rather than the fisherman is fundamental to the solution of our trout and salmon problems. It's appreciating our fishery resource, respecting fellow anglers and giving serious thought to tomorrow.
Next Chapter Meeting: Tuesday, December 17 @ 7:30 PM

Newsletter December 2019
Dear LITU Members and Friends,
The holiday season is upon us once again. I hope everyone had a peaceful and joy-ful Thanksgiving. The December meeting is our traditional Holiday Party where we all get together for some fly tying, some fish stories (and tall tales) and relax with our friends - all members and non-members are welcome. We encourage every-one to bring a pot luck plate of food to share and enjoy with your fellow members and friends. For those who did not attend the November chapter meeting you missed a very informative presentation on “Mouse Fishing the Delaware”. Bryn Bode from Dette fly shop demonstrated what size flies to use, how to present the fly (mouse) and how to find optimal locations to use a mouse. I want to thank Bryn for his excellent presentation. The BOD is always looking for people interested in assuming leadership positions either as future Board members, or as Committee members. If anyone has such inclinations please feel free to talk to me or any member of the board at a meeting, or contact me directly. Please also let the board know of any Projects and or events that you may be interested in having LITU work on or be part of. I would like to wish you all a Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, and Festivus. May this holiday season bring peace and joy to all! Respectfully, Mike Russell

Tips for December
Happy Holidays, a Healthy New Year and Plenty of Memorable Fishing Stories.
And May God grant you the Serenity to accept the ones that got away, the Courage not to tell stories about it, and the Wisdom to know that no one would believe you anyway.
Keep Guides from Freezing - Here's a tip that will be beneficial to those of you who fish for trout in winter. Fishing in freezing weather inevitably means that rod guides will freeze up. Try using "Rain-X," available in all auto stores, to help pre-vent ice. Apply the Rain-X to the rod guides the day before you plan to fish and allow the liquid to dry thoroughly before placing the rod back in its case. This should help prevent freeze-ups. But, do not apply Rain-X to your fly line-it may damage the Finish and Line. Bill Weidemann
Keep Fish in Water in Temperatures Below Freez-ing - Cold temperatures can cause severe damage to soft tissue, like eyes and gills, which are essen-tial for survival. Whenever possible, keep fish in the water while handling, and unhooking them. Use a pair of forceps to remove the hook. You've heard of the “hold your breath when you pull a fish from the water” idea. If you want to take a pic-ture, keep the fish in a net while preparing the camera. It’s best to remove any kind of glove and wet your hands before handling a fish, for a photo, as cloth is extremely adept at removing the protec-tive slime layer that shields the fish from harmful fungi, bacteria, and ectoparasites. Ken Mattera
Permanent Labeling for Plastic Boxes - To prevent markings on plastic gear and fly boxes from being rubbed off, use a permanent marker to label your
boxes and then coat the marking with clear Sally Hansen "Hard as Nails" polish. Once dry, it pre-vents the markings from being smudged or rubbed off. Red Ratcliffe Tricks with Return Address Labels - Remember to bring a sheet of peel-off address labels to fishing shows. They come in handy for catalog requests, raffle tickets, mailing list requests, etc. This way, the only thing you have to add in most cases is your telephone number. They are also useful for identifying rod tubes. Just stick them in position and cover with a thin layer of thread winding ce-ment or 30-minute epoxy (5-minute epoxy will yel-low after a while). Jim Soychak Storing Adhesives - Put Aquaseal and similar mate-rials in the freezer to increase the longevity of these products after they're opened. You might get several years of use from a product that is stored in this way. Dick Jogodnik Send your tips to [email protected]

Great Lakes regulations under consideration Extend the open season for lake trout in Lake Ontario and the Lower Niagara Riv-er (2020_GL 01)
Email a comment
Description: Open the Lake Ontario/Lower Niagara River lake trout season on December 1
(currently opens January 1). The season would be closed from October 1 through November 30.
Rationale: Anglers targeting rainbow trout/steelhead in the Lower Niagara River frequently catch
lake trout. Since lake trout spawning is largely over by the end of November, opening the lake trout
season on December 1 will provide anglers with additional opportunities to harvest trophy lake trout
without jeopardizing lake trout restoration efforts.

Reduce the daily creel limit for brown trout in Lake Ontario tributaries (2020_GL_02)
Email a comment
Description: Reduce the daily creel limit for brown trout in Lake Ontario tributaries from 3 fish per
day to 1 fish per day (excluding the Lower Niagara River).
Rationale: This potential change is intended to prolong high quality brown trout fishing opportuni-
ties through the winter months, while still allowing anglers the opportunity to harvest a trophy fish.
Fishing effort on Lake Ontario tributaries can be intense each year from fall through spring and
maintaining high quality brown trout fishing opportunities relies on anglers releasing a high propor-
tion of their catch.
Increase the minimum size limit for rainbow trout/steelhead on Lake Ontario tribu-taries (2020_GL_03)
Email a comment
Description: Increase the minimum size limit for rainbow trout/steelhead on Lake Ontario tributar-
ies from 21" to 25" (excluding the Lower Niagara River).
Rationale: This potential change is intended to prolong high quality rainbow trout/steelhead fishing
opportunities through the winter months, while still allowing anglers the opportunity to harvest a tro-
phy fish. Anglers have noted smaller rainbow trout/steelhead in recent years, and declining rainbow
trout/steelhead fishing success as the winter season progresses.
Decrease the daily creel limit for rainbow trout/steelhead on Lake Ontario (2020_GL_04)
Email a comment
Description: Reduce the daily creel limit for rainbow trout/steelhead on Lake Ontario from 3 fish
per day to 2 fish per day.
Rationale: Rainbow trout/steelhead provide the primary sportfishery in Lake Ontario's tributaries
from November through the following spring. This potential change is designed to increase num-
bers and sustainability of rainbow trout/steelhead in the tributary fishery by reducing open lake har-
vest during periods when Chinook fishing success in the lake declines and more anglers specifical-
ly target rainbow trout/steelhead.

Eliminate special Lake Erie tributary regulations applied to Spooner Creek and North Branch of Clear Creek (Erie County) (2020_GL_05)
Email a comment
Description: Angling on Spooner Creek and the North Branch of Clear Creek is currently closed
each year from January 1 through March 31rst. Under this potential change, anglers would be able
to fish species with an open season during the period January 1 through March 31rst.
Rationale: The original intent of these regulations was to protect adult steelhead and promote nat-
ural reproduction in these two tributaries. More recent research has indicated that juvenile habitat is
the factor limiting wild steelhead production, not the number of adults. Moreover, these regulations
apply to stream sections that are entirely privately owned and are posted, significantly limiting an-
gling pressure.
