NORTHERN LIGHTS AND WINTER NIGHTS FAQ

Q: What are the chances of seeing northern lights in February and March compared to the rest of the year?A: Churchill is one of the best places in the world to view northern lights because Churchill lies directly beneath the Auroral Oval with auroral activity occurring over 300 nights a year. Although it is possible to see northern lights any time of year, the best time to see northern lights is January through March because there is less precipitation and the skies are clearer.

Q: What are the hotels like?A: The small, locally-owned hotels in Churchill are very basic but they are clean and comfortable. Each hotel has Internet access.

Q: What is inlcuded in the Manitoba Museum tour?A: The Manitoba Museum program begins with a planetarium presentation depicting the northern lights, followed by an interactive program called “Inuit: People of the North”, which gives us a deeper knowledge and understanding of the traditional lifestyles of the Inuit people. We are able to get a closer look at Inuit art and clothing make of fur, skin, stone and bone and learn about how these resources were integral to the Inuit community.

Q: What can I expect from the Snowshoeing Adventure?A: The group will cross the Churchill River by Tundra Buggy and snowshoe the Churchill West Peninsula. Enjoy two hours of interpreted snowshoeing through precambrian rock, boreal forest and along the shore of Hudson Bay. This trip includes a hot meal at an outcamp. Snowshoeing requires good health and mobility.

Q: How does viewing northern lights from the Aurora Lounge work?A: Enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with wine and appetizers in the heated Thanadelthur lounge. View from the observation deck or step out onto the tundra to enjoy the beautiful dancing skies.

WHAT ARE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

• The name “Aurora Borealis” is credited to Galileo Galilei (1616) and means “northern dawn”.

• Churchill is the only place where you can experience the northern lights from the observation deck of a world famous Tundra Buggy.

• Churchill lies directly beneath the Auroral Oval in the Northern Hemisphere, with auroral activity occurring over 300 nights a year.

• Churchill is one of the top three locations in the world to view northern lights.

• Most aurora occur between 90 and 130 kilometers (56 and 80 miles) above sea level, but some, particularly the ray-like forms, extend to several hundred kilometers up.

• The colours of the aurora are either a combination of red and green light, or red and blue light.

• It is the nitrogen in the atmosphere that makes the aurora red and blue and the oxygen that causes the red and green colours to appear.

Temperature can vary from -15 ºC to –25 ºC (5 ºF to -13 ºF), but often strong winds can push the temperature down several more degrees (the ‘windchill’ factor). The Buggies are heated, however dressing in warm layers is the best way to stay comfortable.
