Welcome to Autumn! Easter is looming as I write this report - I hope everyone has a relaxing enjoyable time what ever your plans - so much is happening at this time of year and the weather truly lends itself to getting out and about 4W Driving, Caravanning, attending Festival events or just relaxing with a good book!! We have two trip reports this edition, Murbko which sounded as though it had its moments of interest! and Alcheringa which as you will read was a wonderful one for David Williams to “retire” with. We hopefully will continue to respect and admire these great characters. We wish him well with his caravanning journeys. Stay safe and enjoy your magazine.- Kate

30 YEARS AGO - 1984
CEDUNA WAY—EASTER 1985 I’ll start this item the way most stores end:-
“A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL”. The trip over was a 10 hour trouble free run. We arrived at No. 88’s about 11.00am, after having made CB contact to guide us to the front door. After the usual greeting ceremony, hugs, handshakes and coffee, Angelo took us some 40km to a campsite the other side of Denial Bay, having to reach the site over sand dunes and along the Ocean Beach. Having entrenched ourselves snuggly into camp, Father John Newell then commenced to give us a lesson on fishing. I’ve forgotten many things in my days, but the fishing lesson I’ll always remember. The party fished from John’s tinny in Davenport Creek, and with rod and line in the ocean. About 10 hours of fishing was done during the week-end, which yielded 12 dozen fish from Davenport Creek, 3 dozen fish from the ocean and one dozen fish right outside Angelo’s front door. You really could hit the water with a good cast. Tommies, Gar, Mullet, Salmon rout, Flatheads, a couple of Toadies and a dozen deep sea thing-o’s comprised the catch. The most fish were caught by Father John. The biggest fish, a Mullet from the cean Beach, was caught by the smallest fisherman, Timothy. The energy Timothy used to crank that Mullet in, gave the fish a good chance of winning, but the Taylor grit won through. Sunday saw u all back at Angelo and Sharon’s where we made a meal under the carport and camped on the back lawn. Angelo had teed up fuel for us at .45c/L of which I needed 105L for the 777km from Angaston, that worked out to be OK by me for a G60. We departed Ceduna about 8.45am for a leisurely trip home, stopping every 2 hours for a break, plus a main lunch break. We arrived home at 7.45pn not really feeling like we had just driven 777km. From the 006’s, sincere thanks t real beaut travelling and camping companions. Regards to all club members from Angelo and Sharon (NPC88)

All participants must register their name and vehicle registration on the trip sheet, or advise the trip leader of their participation. Registration is required to comply with the Club’s public liability insurance policy. Visitors are welcome to join most trips and social events; simply register your name on the sheet in the trip folder or see the Trips Officer. Visitors must also sign the Club “Warning” forms if participating on a trip.
All participants must confirm with the designated Trip Leader by the Confirmation Date that they still wish to attend the event or trip. Failure to do so will indicate to the Trip Leader that you do NOT wish to participate.
If at the last minute you are unable to join a trip for which you have registered, please make every endeavour to advise either the trip leader or someone else joining the trip. This will ensure the group is not held up waiting for a non-arrival.
(Remember to complete your ICE form prior to commencing on your Trip.)
The Club recommends that members have RAA membership to cover mechanical breakdowns on Club trips, and ambulance cover from the SA Ambulance Service or your
private health insurer to cover medical emergencies.

The President’s Points
Hi Patrollers, Well we are well under way for 2015. The 4th month of the year again is upon us. We have had quite a few events over the past couple of months. The trip to visit Glenn at his Ironbank residence where he has a major project to build a 3’ 6’ gauge SAR class steam locomotive was very interesting and informative. We are also looking forward to a few more trips. A day trip down to the Murray Mouth and lunch will have been held in March. The Easter weekend trip for 2015 is to be held up in the Flinders Ranges. The restoration work to be done up at “Moxam’s Hut” at Skytrek with 14 cars and 28 members should make the objective achievable. The Venus Bay trip is also a trip to consider. There are so many activities you can participate in on this trip. Also a few day trips are on the agenda. Keep your eye out on the trips table. I am very excited as well as pleased to see members organising trips and events this year. The trip table seems to be full. Thank you to all those members who are leading them. This is a great way of getting to know other members outside a meeting. “Happy Easter” - Share this time together with loved ones and reflect on life, love, family and all your blessings.
Happy Easter & happy travels, Your Club President Helen Richards (364)

NPC Sausage Sizzle Feb. General Meeting
Thursday evening 5th February 2015, Nissan Club members met at the School Hall and enjoyed the Annual Sausage Sizzle get together which as always, precedes the first General Meeting of each year. We were treated to really nice weather (not too hot!) and as usual, a delicious array of fresh salads brought along by those attending which accompanied the Sausages once again purchased by Pat & Des. A lot of catching up was undertaken with stories of holidays and events which have transpired following the last event of 2014, our Breakfast in the Park, Christmas and New Year etc. (Thanks Helen for photo’s)

Guest Speaker - February General Meeting St. John’s Presentation - CPR/Debrillator
Demonstration Fran Garrick addressed the meeting giving a comprehensive and very informative talk and demonstration on performing CPR and using a Defibrillator. This presentation proved to be very well received by those members present and helped to explain several aspects regarding our new Defibrillator machine. Questions were encouraged at the completion of the demonstration.
Jeff burns a few calories - while helping Fran perform CPR on a Mannequin, watched by the NPC members who were totally absorbed by the demonstration.

12 members and 4 guests enjoyed the peace and serenity of the lagoon in 2015. This was a weekend of wonderful weather. Knowing what we know of Murbko’s usual weather……..It was cooler, with jackets being required for the usual evening dessert feast on Australia Day. One blessing from this weather was not a mosquito in sight and virtually no flies. It was quite windy at times, especially in the evenings. The sound of awnings being put away in the early hours of the mornings echoed around Murbko, but our tent and Gazebo stood strong. Differences to other years included much smaller yabbies, Myoporums growing everywhere on previously bare ground, and a very “poor show” from the Carp for the fish-ing competition. In 2014 a massive 92 fish measuring 38 metres were caught. Alas, not in 2015; only 8 fish with a combined length of 2.485 metres. However, the author is happy to report he won the competition and was awarded a fishing rod, which was kindly donated by Brian Booy.
Jim Byfield showed us all how to fish by going spear fishing in his canoe. He caught a couple of beauties over a metre long. Canoeing/kayaking in the lagoon and river tributary was enjoyed by most.
Pauline Byfield assisted Jim in bringing their canoe back to shore by using her umbrella as a sail in the breeze; a sight reminiscent of days gone by. Unfortunately the weather was a bit inclement for the sunset canoe/kayak cruise, but Brian & Judy Cook bravely canoed across the lagoon, disappearing into the darkness on the other side for a short while. Janice Lamkin yelled after them to return, but her voice was carried away on the wind. Needless to say they returned safely, but a bit chilly.

There were three sightings of Brown snakes around the canoe beach. The whole camp turned out at the first sighting to watch it slither this way and that, before disappearing into the reeds. For the safety of the camp, one Brown snake was eventually disposed of. A great effort was made by all for the Australia Day dress-up. A multitude of red, white & blue and green & gold was on display for Happy Hour and the dessert feast later. Pavlovas abounded, together with a delicious bread & butter pudding, some beautifully decorated sponge cakes and tasty ginger cream cups to name but a few of the gorgeous desserts provided by all. One notable absence from this feast – No Trifles!! Thank you to Brian & Judy Cook for organising a fantastic weekend of fun and friendship. Maddie & John.

Like Brown’s Cows, Nissan members arrived at the free camp site across from Dave’s Place Wellington. The weather was not the best, but it is Summer in Australia, so it ranged from hot to very hot!!! It was indeed a privilege to be a part of the gathering for the “Last Shindig at Alcheringa”. David Williams, (nephew of the legendary (R.M.Williams) is at long last hanging up his reign and trusty saddle for the last time. As the country song goes, he’s retiring to the long paddock. David is a true Aussie Character, the likes of which will never be seen again. He goes the same way as the bullocky, stockmen, miners, bush Balladeers and pioneers have gone. They shaped this unique country. What a legacy David and his fellow pioneers have well and truly left their mark. One of his greatest accomplishments was spending time in New Zealand training his beloved horses for The Lord of The Ring Movie. We were kept entertained by an array of bands, bush Balladeers and country singers. Even “ELVIS” made a surprise appearance, adding much to the evening’s entertainment.
Christine Danton, who is a world renowned ‘contortionist,’ bent over backwards to please us. Christine could do things with her body that were impossible! We were simply amazed to find out that she had turned 70. I think she put us all to shame. Maddie Day was very excited to win a
beautiful jacket in the raffle; there was an excellent array of prizes. They have a team of volunteers that work tirelessly in a host of positions to ensure the whole week end ran smoothly, ranging from the roast meal and des-serts on Saturday night to buckets of ice water periodically being brought around to soak hand towels etc in for grateful hot bodies.

David and his many supporters have raised many thousands of dollars over the years to support various charities including The Royal Flying Doctor’s Service. Peter Goers from the A.B.C blew in to open the show, ate an ice-cream then disappeared again. Peter made reference to the use of the word “punt.“ Like many of us who grew up using that terminology, he too was left wondering why we now say “ferry”. (How the times are changing) The museum dedicated to David’s glorious Spanish dancing horses has now been relocated to N.S.W. I’m told that it is well worth the time to have a look through it. Brian Cook knows exactly where it is. On behalf of the 14 members that enjoyed a very entertaining week end, I would like to thank Brian and Judy Cook for doing their homework and ensuring a super experience; one not to be forgotten in a hurry. (Long live Country music.) P.S I’m glad to report that the much referred to defibrillator was not used, although Bob Lamkin did turn a little pale during the contortionist’s act! J and R BRITTAIN
NPC Show ‘n Tell
February General Meeting Pat showed a product she had purchased and described its many uses at the meeting. It is a waffle weave dish cloth but can be used in a variety of ways, including wetting and washing your car and then wringing out and drying it off, cleaning car windows and many other things in the “men’s” shed. Ideal for washing floors or other wet areas and once again wringing out to dry off. It can be used in the home, outside for windows etc., vehicles and caravans etc. Pat took quite a lot of orders for this product so a lot of “Autumn” cleaning may possibly be undertaken.

TESTING AND TAGGING OF ELECTRICAL CORDS
At the March 2015 General meeting, a member cited an instance in a NSW caravan park where he was required to have his caravan lead 'Tested & Tagged'. Most NPC members were unaware of this requirement and some doubted its veracity. Our Property Officer, Brian Robinson, has undertaken some internet research and concluded that:- “It is not legally required to have caravan leads or other electrical appliances 'Tested & Tagged' to use in a caravan park. However, some park owners see it as a requirement to satisfy some Public Liabil-ity Insurance issue based on Transportable Home legislation and do have the right to refuse electrical connection if they see fit.”
The following message has been forwarded to all Nissan Patrol Club Members who are able to attend General Meetings:- Phil Stanley, one of our NPC committee members and an Electrician, has kindly offered to test and tag members extension cords. (limit of two leads per NPC member please). If you would like to take him up on this offer he will be available at the next few General meetings to carry out the testing. Craig will forward this info via emails to all members also).
PORTABLE BUTANE COOKERS Portable butane gas stoves (also known as lunchbox cookers) are designed to be used with small butane canisters. The stoves are commonly used for camping and outdoor activities and are often sold with a plastic case for portability.
Some portable butane gas stoves with integrated gas canisters can pose significant safety risks to people. If the butane gas canister overheats or the shut-off valve fails, the stove can explode and cause injuries to users. There have been a number of incidents reported across Australia, ranging from scalding to serious burns.
Significant testing of a range of portable butane gas stoves with integrated canisters has shown many of them do not fully comply with Australian safety standards. Stoves that failed the testing have had their safety compliance certificate suspended and have been removed from display and sale.
The 'stop sale' relates to both single and dual burner gas stoves. A list of stoves currently approved for use in line with Australian safety standards is available at: .sa.gov.au-portable butane gas stove safety
Disposing of a portable gas stove with integrated gas cylinder You can dispose of both stove units and gas canisters safely through an appropriate community waste or recy-cling centre. Zero Waste SA has information about hazardous waste disposal and recycling locations.

21 members plus one ex member and one grandchild attended the above visit. Glenn’s major points of progress over the intervening five years since he spoke to the club are, 1) built a new super structure for the coal/water tender 2) manufactured four bearing housings for the two main drive wheel axels 3) fitted two of the above bearing housings; each housing has taken him six months to fit. (Note that the main drive wheel axels are about 2100mm apart and Glenn is trying to achieve a parallel alignment of these with less than a quarter of a millimetre (0.25mm = ten thousandths of an inch) run-out error!) Glenn is looking for work to help fund his hobby and is highly skilled in steel fabrication and machining. He has welding equipment, lathe, milling and shaper machines.

FROM THE PROPERTY OFFICER’S LOCKER
The club’s Property Officer is responsible for the custody and maintenance of the majority of the club’s property assets. Club assets, some of which are listed below, are available for loan to members for use on trips and other personal occasions such as parties, anniversaries etc.
These occasions do not need to be a club trip but loans should be directly for the member’s benefit. While third party loans to other like minded parties such as another club would be considered by the committee on their merit, the club’s property is primarily for the benefit of our members.
Members wishing to borrow club property can arrange to do so by contacting the club’s Property Officer, Brian ROBINSON, preferably by email at “[email protected]”, at a meeting (on a piece of paper or make sure I write it down) or by phone on 8248 1186 / 0429 185 580.
Some of the more common items are ;
* Marquee (tent) - 5.3 x 3.5 mtr (17’ x 11’), great for club outdoor functions and back yard social occasions. (weighs about 50kg all up and takes about 4 – 6 people to put up properly)
* COLEMAN Shade Dome - Approximately 4 mtr square at the base.
* Toilet Tents (x2) - Older style with 4 corner poles and guy ropes.
* Posthole Diggers (x2) – usually go with the Toilet Tents.
Handheld UHF CB Radios (x2) – One with rechargeable batteries and the other requires 3 x ‘AA’ batteries, preferably alkaline. Ideal for visitors on club outings.
* MAX TRAX Traction Boards – For those sinking occasions.
* Hand Winch and Accessories – comes as a kit with a couple of shackles, snatch block, tree trunk protector etc.
* Snatch Strap/Winch Wire Damper Chains (x2) – Each 4 mtr odd and 5kg approximately.
* Static Display Screens – 3 double sided screens each some 6’H x 2’W and suitable for use as pin boards. Can be free standing if assembled in “Z” for-mation.
* First Aid Kit & Defibrillator – Normally issued as a pair and primarily for club trips and activities only.
* Variety of NPC Flags & Banners – To identify our groups on trips and gatherings etc.
