Intended Users:– middle-school students
(grades 6-8)
Problem:– confused and
disorganized by multiple classes and teachers
– carrying 30+ pound back packs
eBinder®
• A personalized window into their entire school life, using the familiar metaphor of a "school binder."
• An easy way to access assignments and organize their school life (like a physical binder). – tabs labeled for each class– a calendar– alerts regarding new, due and
OVER due assignments.• A place to do and submit their
work, communicate with their teacher, and collaborate with other students.
• Video streamed announcement messages from the school principal
eBinder® Provides Students With:
The Challenge• What functions are
needed and where do they go in an e-binder?
• How much does the binder metaphor dictate the solution?
Design Challenge 1:
Functionality Implementation
Design Principles • Consistency: paper and
pen metaphor• Visibility: Put functions
specific to the page at the top of the relevant page
• Progressive Disclosure: tap-and-hold pop-up menus
• Reduce Memory Load: Opening and closing the lid automatically performs on/off, login/logout.
Design Challenge 1:
Functionality Implementation
The Challenge• What is the best way to
organize information using the tab system, so that the binder is easily navigable?
Design Challenge 2: Organization and
Navigation
Design Principles• Less is more: Restricted
tabs to two levels deep• Consistency: Consistent
“home” page format for all subjects
• Visible Affordances: All home pages highlight “new” items since the student last visited
Design Challenge 2: Organization and
Navigation
Design Principles• Progressive
Disclosure: The first page of a subtab is an index of the contents
• Efficiency: All items that exist elsewhere in the binder are hyperlinked for easy access
Design Challenge 2: Organization and
Navigation
Most Interesting HCI Feature:
The Binder Metaphor
• Naturally maps to paper & pencil experience that students are already accustomed to
Our Approach• Large size are easier to
see and manipulate then the smaller existing PDAs (Palm, Newton)
• Students can easily identify with the paper/pencil metaphor
• Students do not need to learn another alphabet
• Freehand writing with a pen minimizes Articulatory Distance and leads to High Engagement
Most Interesting HCI Feature:
The Binder Metaphor
