Total Body Approach to DetoxificationFall 2015 Body Comp Challenge Lecture Two

What is a Toxin?

Chemicals that present an unreasonable risk of injury to health.

Toxins may cause immune and nervous system abnormalities even below the defined toxic dose.

Exposures are additive and synergistic.

Most toxins are fat-soluble.

Fat soluble toxins accumulate in fatty tissues, in particular the nerve sheaths, liver, and brain.

What is a Toxin?

Toxins are everywhere: 85,000 known toxins in our environment We are exposed to approx. 500/day Toxins are even found in the umbilical cords of

neonates Early menses in girls (as early as 8 years old) Correlation between phylates and lower

testosterone levels in teenage boys.

Sources of Toxins

Food Pesticides, Herbicides Additives Preservatives Hormones Mercury

Air Smoke Uranium

Plastics

Carpet / Synthetics / Rubber

Solvents Paint Cleaners Detergents Fragrance Gasoline

A Total Body Approach to Detoxification

Detoxification should be a daily process.

Goal: Elimination > Intake

Everyone can benefit from supporting organs of detoxification.

Detoxification: Phase I

Attempts to make a non-polar, non-water soluble compound more water soluble by adding a polar group so it can be excreted through sweat, urine, and/or feces.

Cytochrome P-450 system creates a toxic intermediate

Key minerals needed for this system… Iron, zinc, magnesium, molybdenum, manganese,

sulfur, selenium, and copper.

Detoxification: Phase I

The process of creating this toxic intermediate creates oxidative stress in the form of free radicals.

These free radicals bind to proteins, DNA/RNA causing cell damage and sometimes cell death.

Vit C, Vit E, zinc, and selenium protect against these harmful free radicals.

Detoxification: Phase II

Transforms the toxic intermediate into a non-toxic water soluble compound.

Requires lots of energy (ATP) and amino acids

Several processes occur here: Glutathione conjugation, sulfation, methylation, glucuronidation, etc.

Supporting Phase II Detoxification: Cruciferous veggies Sulfurophane containing goods like broccoli, garlic, leeks, and onions Limonene Milk Thistle B6, B12, B2, Folate,

Detoxification: Phase II

Things that thwart detoxification: Low protein diets NSAIDs Overexposure to toxins Alcohol Caffeine Medical drugs (anti depressants, H2 blockers, oral

contraceptives) Trans fats Too much iron Acidic urine

Heavy Metals

Denatures enzymes

Interfere with cell membrane functions

Create free radicals

Mitochondrial damage

DNA damage

Hormone imbalance/dysfunction

Heavy Metals, cont.

Elevated toxic burden from heavy metals is related to a number of difference chronic conditions.

They affect ALL organ system.

Arsenic, Mercury, Lead, Cadmium are big four

Arsenic

Most common cause of acute heavy metal poisoning in adults.

Released into the environment by the smelting process of copper, zinc, and lead as well as by manufacturing of chemicals, glasses, and pesticides

Found in water supply: shellfish, cod, haddock.

Also in paint, rat poisoning, fungicides, and wood preservatives.

Exposure occurs mostly in workplace.

Lead

Number two on Top 20 list. Lead accounts for most of the cases of pediatric heavy metal poisoning.

Lead in paint until 1980s.

2.5 million tons of lead produced yearly: batteries, cable coverings, plumbing, ammunition, fuel additives pvc plastics, crystal glass production, pencils, printing ink, and pesticides.

Mercury

Naturally in the environment from the degassing of the earth’s crust and volcanic emissions. Mining operations, plants, and paper industries.

Used in fungicides, paint, thermometers, dental amalgams, vaccines.

Atmospheric mercury returns to the earth as rain and accumulates in aquatic food chains and fish in lakes.

People who consume two fish meals a week can show high serum levels of mercury.

Candida can trap mercury.

Cadmium

Is a by-product of mining and smelting of lead and zinc and is number 7 on top 20.

Also used in batteries, PVC plastic, paint, insecticides, fungicides, commercial fertilizers, dental alloys, motor oil and exhaust.

Coach’s Recommendations for Detoxification

Eliminate as many external sources of toxicity as possible. Health and beauty products, industrial

solvents/cleaners, cologne, plastic, commercially raised food, processed food, etc.

Eliminate as many internal sources of toxicity as possible. Fungus – mycotoxins. See anti-fungal protocol. Reduce gut inflammation

Coach’s Recommendations for Detoxification

Check urine and salivary pH Kidney minimum 6.5-7.0 Salvia 7.0 – 7.4

If too acidic... Magnesium – 10mg/kilo Green drinks twice a day Vegetables (at least 9 servings a day) Potassium Citrate 300mg/day

Coach’s Recommendations for Detoxification

Take a multi-vitamin Women – with iron, Men w/o iron

Take 500-1000mg of Vitamin C a day

Use or supplement with Turmeric – a powerful anti-oxidant.

Eat lots of protein and cruciferous veggies. Also, emphasize garlic, leeks, onions, and lemons.

Zinc, magnesium and probiotic supplement is highly recommended.

Do infrared sauna once a week.

Coach’s Recommendations for Detoxification

Infrared Sauna Protocol Pre-Sauna (30 minutes prior): 2 Clatherate, 1 R-L

Flow, Niacin 25-100mg, Loofah sponge. 2 Liters of filtered water total intake pre and post

sauna Get in the shower and wash immediately. Do not

wipe skin with towel before showering Post-Sauna: Wellness Greens and Uber Mag Px

Infrared Sauna
