2007 Alumni Game

The Fall Term of 1927 was the first year that field hockey was played at the University of

Louisville. That year UofL watched as a young team that played with tremendous enthusiasm, albeit without a coach until 1928 when Miss Lillian (Tucky) Sanders took over.

In 1928 after winning their first two local games, the team embarked on what was then considered a milestone when the team traveled to Nashville to play Peabody College. This trip to Nashville was the first ever taken by a Southern girls’ hockey team. Games were almost exclusively played with local teams. In this respect UofL had taken a jump on the other Southern schools. In 1972, almost 50 years after it was first played, women’s field hockey became a varsity sport along with women’s basketball, tennis, volleyball, and gymnastics.

UofL’s field hockey success rose in 1976 under the direction of coach Sandy McLaughlin. McLaughlin’s Cardinals had one of their most successful seasons, outscoring their opponents 46-9 to close out the season with a 9-2 record and a second place finish in the Kentucky Women’s Intercollegiate Conference (KWIC). They followed that success with an 11-3 record. Louisville went on to capture the KWIC championship three times and represented the KWIC at the Southern Region II AIAW tournament twice.

School records indicate that the Cards competed in the KWIC from 1976-82. Louisville played as a Midwest Independent team from 1984-93 and joined the Mid-American Conference in 1994.

In 1998, UofL Director of Athletics Tom Jurich hired Pam Bustin, the program’s first full-time field hockey coach. Two years later Jurich’s support and vision saw the completion of Trager Stadium, a state-of-the-art facility which has served as the host site three NCAA field hockey championships

as well as numerous conference and high school championships.

In 2001, the Cardinals made their debut in the top 20 rankings at No. 18 and rose as high as No. 6. The following year, UofL claimed the first of many conference titles, winning the 2002 Mid-American Conference regular season. In 2003, the Cards won the MAC tournament and received the league’s automatic bid to the 16-team NCAA tournament for the first time in program history. Louisville said good-bye to the MAC in 2004, taking the regular season, tournament and the conference NCAA play-in spot with them.

In 2005, UofL made the move to the BIG EAST Conference where they won three consecutive regular season titles in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Since becoming members of the BIG EAST, the Cards have played in the semifinals of the championship each season.

In 2010, Justine Sowry became the Cardinals’ eighth head coach. Sowry returned to Louisville after serving as an assistant under Pam Bustin from 1998-2002 and is continuing to build the program and take it to new heights. The Cardinals wrapped up their stay in the BIG EAST in 2013 when they took home a share of the regular season title. The 2014 season marked the beginning of a new era for the Cards as they begin competition in the Atlantic Coast Conference - arguably the toughest league in Division I field hockey. In its inaugural ACC season, Louisville picked up its first league win with a 3-2 upset of top-ranked North Carolina. The Cardinals went on to upset No. 4 Duke and beat Wake Forest to finish the season tied for third. Louisville spent six weeks in the top 10 and earned an at-large bid to the 2014 NCAA Tournament.

Although many things have changed since the inception of women’s field hockey at UofL, one thing has still remained the same, the drive and

desire to compete and excel at the sport of field hockey.
