WINSTON-SALEM, NC, 3 Oct — Kidneys recovered fromdeceased donors with acute renal failure appear to workjust as well when transplanted as other kidneys, US re-searchers found. SAN FRANCISCO, 3 Oct—Electronic readers couldbe the hottest gift this holiday season as a new crop ofportable media devices begins to join iPods and othermusic players as must-have tech accessories.

The number of readers bought will be closelywatched by industry analysts in advance of the expectedemergence of multimedia tablet PCs, which Apple andothers are thought to be working on and which couldalter the competitive landscape.

Falling prices and an ever-growing library ofdigital books are driving demand for e-readers likeAmazon.com’s Kindle and Sony Corp’s Reader.

The light, thin devices now mainly appeal to booklovers, but many see them as the first iteration of a go-everywhere gadget that consumers will use to watchmovies and surf the Web, as much as scan books andnewspapers.—Internet

LONDON, 3 Oct —A new documentary seeks to unravel the mystery of whybillions of honey bees have been disappearing from hives across the United States, and concludes that the chief suspect is pesticides.

“Vanishing of the Bees,” which has a limited theatrical release in Britain fromnext week, follows the fate of a group of U.S. beekeepers hit by Colony CollapseDisorder (CCD), which first struck in 2004 and made U.S. headlines three yearslater.

Countless bees would suddenly vanish, leaving an empty hive but few bodies, and the phenomenon has variously been linked to mites, disease, geneticallymodified crops, mobile phones and, in the words of one beekeeper, “PPB,” or“piss-poor beekeeping.”

While the cause has yet to be established, the film suggests there is a link topesticides, and particularly those applied to seeds as opposed to sprayed on existingplants.—Internet

Lots of exercise lowersbreast cancer risk

BETHESDA, 3 Oct—Vigorous exercise lowers breastcancer risk in older women, US researchers found.

The study, published in the journal BMC Cancer, found women who reported exercising more-than-moderately for seven or more hours a week were 16percent less likely to develop breast cancer than thosewho did not exercise.

However, the study which also surveyed activityat various age levels in the more than 110,000 post-menopausal women, found no link between breastcancer risk and being active at a younger age.

The women were asked to rate their level of physi-cal activity at ages 15-18, 19-29, 35-39, and in thepast 10 years.

“Our findings could help inform the mechanismsof the physical activity-breast cancer relationship,”study leader Dr Tricia Peters of the US National Can-cer Institute in Bethesda said in a statement.

STOCKHOLM, 3 Oct—Cholesterol is necessaryfor the formation of braincells, according to a re-cent study by the Swed-ish medical universityKarolinska Institute.

Professor Ernest Are-nas who led the study saidexperiment in mice showsthat the formation ofdopamine-producingneurons during brain de-velopment is dependenton the activation of aspecific receptor in thebrain by an oxidised formof cholesterol calledoxysterol, said a press re-lease from Karolinska in-stitute.

“Oxysterol contributesto a safer and better culti-vation of dopamine-pro-

ducing cells, which is agreat advancement sinceit increases the possibilityof developing new treat-ments for Parkinson’s dis-ease,” said Arenas.

Dopamine-producingnerve cells play an impor-tant part in many brainfunctions and processes, from motor skills to re-ward systems and de-pendency. They are alsothe type of cell that diesin Parkinson’s disease, added Professor Arenas.

It is hoped that one dayit will be possible to re-place dead cells in thebrains of Parkinson’s pa-tients with transplantedcultivated dopamine-pro-ducing cells.

PHILADELPHIA, 3 Oct—US researchers suggest abreast cancer drug side-effect — joint pain — islinked to menopause.

The side-effect ofsometimes very severejoint pain, arthralgia, wasreported by 139 womenof the 300 taking part inthe study who were tak-ing one of the drugs in agroup of aromatase in-hibitors.

Seventy-five percentof those reporting symp-toms said the pain beganwithin the first threemonths of the therapy.

“We are fortunate to-day to have many effec-tive treatments for breastcancer. Unfortunately, many of these treatmentshave troublesome and de-

bilitating side effects thatcan last for months oryears after treatment, andreally harm the quality oflife and productivity ofwomen who receivethem,” study lead authorDr Jun J Mao of the Uni-versity of PennsylvaniaSchool of Medicine inPhiladelphia said in astatement.

The study, published in

Cancer, found the jointpain was less likely inwomen who had experi-enced menopause morethan a decade before tak-ing the medication.

Women who began thedrug treatment less thanfive years after their lastmenstrual period werethree times more likely tosuffer arthralgia.

SAN JOSE, 3 Oct— Avaccine delivery system— inhaling a mist totransmit dried vaccine —may improve safetyand decrease costs ofmeasles vaccinations, USresearchers say.

“There is a need fortechnologies that couldstabilize the measles vac-cine, as this would facili-tate mass vaccination in

developing world coun-tries where transport, stor-age, administration costsand other complexitieshave limited vaccine cov-erage by 70 percent,”study principal investiga-tor Satoshi Ohtake ofAridis Pharmaceuticals inSan Jose, Calif., says in astatement.

Ohtake’s study uses acombination of mild spraydrying process conditionsand unique stabilizers toproduce stable dry pow-

ders with excellent pres-ervation of vaccine activ-ity. When the potency ofthe dried vaccine wastested while being storedat different temperaturesover several weeklongperiods, the dry-powderedaerosol was stable for atleast eight weeks at 37degrees C, surpassing theWorld Health Organiza-tion requirement for heatstability of one week atsimilar storage condi-tions.—InternetBADAJOZ, 3 Oct—

Spanish researchers rec-ommend giving babybreast milk at the sametime of day it was ex-pressed.

The study, published inNutritional Neuroscience, confirms that the compo-sition of breast milk

The study found con-tent differences in milksamples taken from 30women six to eight timesa day depending on thetime of day the samplewas taken. These differ-ences include variations

in three nucleotides —adenosine, guanosine andusine — which excite orrelax the nervous systemand influence sleep.

“You wouldn’t giveanyone a coffee at night, and the same is true ofmilk — it has day-specificingredients that stimulateactivity in the infant, and other night-time com-ponents that help the babyto rest,” lead authorCristina Sanchez of theChrononutrition Labora-tory at the University ofExtremadura in Spain saidin a statement.

OXFORD, 3 Oct—Chil-dren ages 5 and older arethe least likely to be pro-tected by insecticide-treated mosquito nets inAfrica, British researcherssaid. The nets reduce thechances of developing life-threatening malaria in Af-rica but recent researchfindings, published inBMC Public Health, showthat older children — ages5-19 — are the least wellprotected by these nets.

Study leader AbdisalanM Noor of the Universityof Oxford in Englandand a member of the Medi-cal Research Institute-Wellcome Trust ResearchProgram says there are tworeasons the older childrenneed to use the nets.

“Firstly, they representa large fraction of thepopulation in most devel-oping African communi-ties,” Noor said in a state-ment. “Secondly, whilethey may have developeda functional immune re-sponse against clinical dis-ease before their fifthbirthday, they will not havedeveloped an immunity tothe malaria parasite andcontinue to contributetransmission in the com-munity.”—Internet
