Heat is our element
New Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece, where ancient meets modern
The main purpose of the new Acropolis Museum in Athens in 2009 was
to provide a suitable building in which to preserve the cultural heritage of
Greece. The architectural design drew on the mathematical and conceptual
clarity of Ancient Greece, the intention being that the treasures of the
Acropolis should be on display in exhibition rooms that were appropriate
and accessible to visitors from all over the world. The museum was
constructed, not only for the preservation of the antiquities, but also for
their protection. The creation of a pleasant atmosphere for museum visitors
was high on the list of criteria, too. So it was clear that the designers had
high expectations of a reliable, secure heat supply. These demands were
met in full by an advanced commercial boiler system from Buderus.
Logano SK725 steel boiler:
❚ Broad output range from 690 to 1600 kW
❚ Optimum energy utilisation; standard
seasonal effi ciency [to DIN] up to 94 %
❚ Particularly economical operation
❚ Low emissions
❚ Simple to transport with dimensions
designed to fi t through doorways

A place of historyCovering an exhibition area of more
than 14,000 m2, the new Acropolis
Museum reveals the history of the
Acropolis in Athens. Alongside a
plethora of ancient treasures, visitors
to the museum can also marvel at
artefacts found on the site. This
modern three-storey complex houses
an auditorium seating 200, a theatre
seating 180, a café and a gift shop.
For the visitors to be able to enjoy the
attractions undisturbed, a pleasant level
of air conditioning is required, as is an
uninterrupted hot water supply, for
example in the sections of the museum
where the toilet facilities are located.
To supply heat to the total area of
23,000 m2, it was essential to fi nd a
demand-dependent, effi cient and above
all reliable heating system.
An effi cient systemThe demands placed on the heating
system were not insignifi cant, as
reliability and economy were both
vital, as was high operational reliability.
This was a challenge that Buderus
was delighted to take on – and the
outcome, with a commercial boiler
system composed of three Buderus
Logano SK275 steel boilers, each with
an 870 kW output, was a resounding
success. These boilers feature optimum
combustion of the fuel supplied, and
excellent thermal insulation. High
seasonal effi ciency [to DIN] of up to
94 % proves that they are designed for
exceptionally economical performance.
In combination with three Logalux
SU1000 DHW cylinders, each with a
capacity of 1000 litres, effi cient heating
and provision of hot water is also
guaranteed. The heat produced is
transferred to the rooms of the museum
via radiators and an underfl oor heating
system.
A control unit for the futureThe commercial boiler system is
controlled via the intelligent Logamatic
4311 and 4312 control systems from
the Logamatic 4000 range. As part of
this, the boiler sequence is controlled
by the FM447 function module. This is
how Buderus brings a little bit of the
future to the historical location of the
new Acropolis Museum in Athens.
