Insects

What do some people do when an insect lands on them? They slap it or brush it away. But what if the insect is a ladybird.

Many people let them stay. They might even say, “How cute!” Ladybirds are also called lady beetles. A ladybird is a small

beetle with a round body.Ladybirds may be bright red or yellow, with spots of black.

Pictures of the ladybirds can be on t-shirts, greeting cards and

other things. One reason is that ladybirds seem gentle. They don’t bite or sting. Another reason is that most ladybirds are

helpful. These beetles eat insects that eat farm crops. Ladybirds have been carried to farms to eat pests. A ladybird’s bright colours are a warning. The colour warns, “I taste bad.”

Animals that eat insects learn to stay away from ladybirds. But to people, a colourful ladybird seems to say something else.
