REPORT OF WINTER SCHOOL ON HUMAN RIGHTS, 2018 AT KATHMANDU, NEPAL

About Winter School 2018:

The Winter School will act as a platform for delegates from various countries to come forward and learn about protection and enforcement of Human Rights in their respective countries. The content for the school is developed by experts of Human Rights and the content has been developed keeping in ind the needs and circumstance of different countries. The delegates will also get a opportunity to discuss the situation prevailing in their country and can at the same time suggest the appropriate solution.

Winter School on Human Rights 2018 was organized by Youth for Human Rights Nepal and Knowledge Steez on 24th to 29th December 2018 at Kathmandu, Nepal. The Students were present from India and Nepal.

Day-1, 24th December, 2018:

The First Day of Winter School started with the Inaugural Session with the presence of:

Salendra Kumar Shrestha

(He is a Former IGP, Armed Police Force, Nepal. He is also a renowned social worker).

Ratindra Khatri

(He is a retired colonel of Nepal Army served more than 28 years in government job, served as Incharge in UN Peace keeping in Haiti).

Yubaraj Nayaghore

(A famous Nobelian, a traveller and a essayist. His more than 19 books are published. He has won All National Award like:

“Madan Puraskar, Motiram Bhatta Yuva Puraskar”).

Barrister Rizwana Yusuf

(Director Administration and Member Legal Department, Institute Of Hazrat Mohammad (SAW). She is also an advocate in the Supreme Court Of Bangladesh. She Is an alumni From ICNC at Fletcher School Of Law, United Nations mandated University For Peace and Attended programs at Harvard Law School, University Of OSLO,OECD , ADB and the World Bank).

Rahul K.C.

(He is a president of YHRI of Nepal. He is also one of the organiser of this Winter School On Human Rights 2018) and

Niteesh Kumar Upadhyay

He is a founder of Knowledge Steez and a Profound Human Rights activist and received 3 national Awards for his contribution in the field of Humna Rights and His First award is: Social change maker 2015; Youth Human Rights Awards2017; Young Humanitarian Award 2017. He has a great experience of teaching Human Rights at various institutes including Renecaisan Institute of Human Rights, France. He received various scholarships including Jage Mexico, Jage Turkey, Hague Netherlands, ILEC New York; Zimain Academy China And Renecaisan France. His more than 25 research papers are published in national and international and he has presented papers in more than 50 national and international conferances.

Niteesh Sir in past was also associated in NLSIU Bangalore, RGNUL Patiala and CNLU Patna and served at various capacities.

Day-2, 25th December, 2018:

The Winter School begin with the Technical Session-1 of:

1. Colonel Ratinder Khatri: ( He is a retired Colonel of Nepal army)

Who spoke on the Concept of Humanitarian Law. He discussed the principles of Humanity, Neutrality, Impartiality and Independence.

The Session followed by:

2. Salendra Kumar Shrestha:(Former IGP, Armed Police Force, Nepal and a renowned Social Worker)

Who presented his views on the Humanitarian Law “Rule of War”. He discussed about the concept of Encounter. He then told us about his Organization “Curry without Worry” where the Needy and Hungry People of Nepal are served free food on every Tuesday of the week . He also invited students as well as teachers to visit his organisation and may enjoy the opportunity to serve food to the Needy and hungry People of Nepal.

Technical Session-2:

1. Barrister Rizwana Yusuf: (Director Administration and Member Legal Department, Insitute of Hazrat Mohammad ( SAW) ), Bangladesh.

On the discussion about the Refugee and the Rohingyas Issue.

Activity:

She made the students to provide the recommendations for the people of Bangladesh and Myanmar. This made them step in the shoes of respective countries and look into the responsibilities.

2. Niteesh Kumar Upadhyay:(Assistant Professor at Galgotia University, Greater Noida).

On International Committee of Red Cross and the International Convention related to Military Objectives, Distinction and Proportionality.

Activity:

He also conducted an activity where the outcome showed us that any kind of wrong or say abuse can happen with any person irrespective of the family background, lifestyle, earning or any other class.

Visit:

After the Sessions everyone went to Salendra Kumar Shrestha organisation named as “Curry without worry” and distributed the food to the needy and hungry people of nepal which was a noble act. This shows that Humanity still prevails amongst people.

Day-3: 26th December 2018:

On discussion on “Corporate Social Responsibility” and “Private International Law”.

(Director Economic Division at the Institute Of Hazrat Mohammad(SAW)

Who discussed on the economic justice for the disabled persons.

Activity:

An activity was conducted to know the Various Issues faced under different Disabilities, what Business Ideas can be developed by them for their growth and living and also the support they need. Empathy and Not Sympathy is what persons need was well understood.

(Principal at Kadambari Memorial College at Nepal)

Who discussed the Human Rights in Our Daily Lives and how everywhere we go through it. Be it right from the Birth to Death in forms of Maternity rights, right of Wellbeing, Cultural rights, Social and Economic rights, etc.

Activity:

She also conducted an activity where everyone had to select a picture and present views each depicted from them and have to create a story from that picture.

Day-3, 26th December, 2018:

Lead the day by providing the insight on the role of Religion and Human Rights, as to the difference between faith & religion and how the religion also provides the basic Human Rights.The session was very interactive and interesting too.

(An Advocate, Founder President of Nepalese Law Students Association, Nepal)

Who made us aware how to access Justice. The setup of Mobile Legal Clinics and the Issues faced before and after the disaster. To make better understanding of the Mobile Legal Clinics.

An activity was conducted where the working of such clinics were demonstrated by the teams.

on a brief Discussion:

On Legalizing Prostitution. They discussed the cause of prostitution and also mentioned about the benefits of legalizing prostitution such as the Medical Benefits, Employment Rights and how it would protect the rights of them.

on the brief discussion on:

Recently a new law was passed to provide rights to the transgender community and the next session was all about the rehabilitation of Transgenders. Section 377 of IPC has now accepted the LGBT community and is now engaging them into various sectors of the employment industry. They are not the Victim nor Guilty and they fight for Gender Identity.

Day 4, 27th December, 2018:

On the discussion of standing up for our own rights and giving voices to break the old age stereotypes.

Activity:

She in her session conducted an activity where everyone were asked to write slogans that would be breaking the Stereotype.

(Assistant Professor at School Of Law at Gujarat University, Ahmedabad).

Who discussed on the Human Rights in the field of Environment and Intellectual Property Rights. Registering under IPRs provided protection to the creators of the work and how the legislations of the environment law provides protection under various principles.

The day was concluded by:

The presentations of each student on a topic relating to Human Rights and during which many topic such as: Rights for Protection of Children, Protection for Animals , Reconstruction were covered and etc.

Day-5, 28th December, 2018:

Day-6, 29th December, 2018:

The last day of Winter School 2018 was concluded:

With the Certificate Distribution and opening of various opportunities provided by Knowledge Steez to the Students.

After which the Convocation Ceremony took place where the Certificates and Momentos were distributed to Students and the Faculties. The organizers were also facilitated Of Knowlegde Steez and Youth For Human Rights, Nepal. This marked the end of Winter School 2018.

The Top 3 students during the Winter School 2018 were awarded with the:
