COMPASSIONATE COMMUNITY SERIES:OVERVIEW

Lived experiences of trauma, mental health challenges, and inequity impact how students are able to access the rich opportunities of college life. This series focuses on increasing understanding of these life experiences and their consequences, and on the roles that every member of the CC community plays in addressing these impacts and helping students unlock full, unfettered access to the life of the mind.

MAKING MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS AND REFERRALS (NEW)Understanding who our students are and how they engage with campus life enables us to assist them more effectively as they move through their experience at Colorado College.  This session will start with a look at our stepped care model, and will explore strategies for connecting students to resources that will best serve their needs.

Note: Required for completion of Compassionate Community Certificate

Presenter: Dr. Heather Horton, Director of the Wellness Resource Center

QUESTION, PERSUADE, REFER: ASK A QUESTION, SAVE A LIFESuicide is the #2 cause of death in college-age students. This workshop provides participants with an understanding of suicide and the skills and confidence to intervene to save a life.

Presenter: Dr. Heather Horton, Director of the Wellness Resource Center

YOUR ROLE IN RESPONDING TO LIVED EXPERIENCES OF TRAUMATrauma-informed care (TIC) grows out of the realization that people often have many different types of trauma in their lives and that survivors are often re-traumatized by well-meaning community members. This session will provide an introduction to TIC and an exploration of how each of us can help survivors of trauma rebuild a sense of control and empowerment by implementing TIC practices in our work every day.

Presenter: Dr. Heather Horton, Director of the Wellness Resource Center
