Turtles are reptiles with hard shells that protect them from predators. Just like human bones, a turtle’s shell is actually part of its skeleton. It is made up of over 50 bones, which include the turtle’s ribcage and spine. Depending on the species, turtles may be carnivores, herbivores or omnivores.

There are four species of turtles that can be found in Malaysia. They are the leatherback, green, hawksbill and olive-ridley turtles. These turtles are known for their longevity. Sadly, the number of turtles in most places has plummeted and some are on the brink of extinction. Their biggest threats include the loss of nesting and feeding habitats, excessive egg-collection, poaching and pollution.

Today, it is estimated that there are over 100 million tonnes of plastic in the oceans around the world. Since plastic does not decompose, some turtles may accidentally consume bits and pieces of plastic, mistaking them for food. This will injure or kill them. So one of the simplest things we can do to help protect turtles is to avoid or stop using plastic products.
