Welcome to the Program!!
Hello and Welcome!
Congratulations on being a part of the 2016-2017 Granbury High School swim team! We are excited and honored to have each of you here to achieve our goal of creating a historic program that consistently pushes for district, regional, and state championships!
Please understand the task that is placed before each of you. On this team there are no small or large players, only individuals with roles that they are tasked to accomplish. Not only do we strive to prepare you to succeed in the water, but in life. Always remember that swimming is a small chapter of your life. 50 years from now it won’t matter what you went in the 100 free, but the relationships you made will be what you hold onto.
A quick word about our coaching staff!
Head Coach Jason Pullano attended and swam for NCAA Division 2 Ouachita Baptist University. In 4 years at OBU, Pullano was named Academic-All NSISC 4 times, All-NSISC 3 times and NCAA Academic All-American Honorable mention his senior year. Pullano accepted the position of Head High School Swim Coach for Granbury ISD in 2014. In his first 2 years as Head Coach, Pullano led the Pirates to a second & third consecutive District Championship as well as Top 5 placings for the boys and girls at the Region 2-5A Championship meet. He was also named Boys and Girls District 7-5A Coach of the Meet in 2015. During the summers he works with Coaches Steve Bultman & Jay Holmes at Texas A&M University with their age group swim camp.
Assistant Coach Jennifer Pullano also attended Ouachita where she was an All-Conference, All-American & Academic All-American swimmer. She brings over a decade of swimming experience in East Texas where she competed at the UIL State Championships 4 times during her high school swimming career as well as competing at the NCAA Championships twice during her college career. Jennifer will be working at Acton Middle School in the fall teaching 6 th grade social studies.
As a coaching staff we would like to welcome you to our program and hope you invest in us as much as we will invest in you. This group truly has limitless potential.
Thank you,Jennifer and Jason Pullano

Realistic Goals: Anything you realistically believe you will accomplish this year. Qualifying for regionals? Meeting a TISCA standard? Competing at district? Etc.
Ideal Goals: Anything you ideally wish to accomplish this year. A final at regionals? Medal at district? Break 1:00 in an event? Be named all state? Etc.
OMG Goals: THINK LIMITLESSLY! What are the goals you that will drive you all season? These are the “stars” you’re reaching for! Qualifying for state? Jr National cuts? Getting recruited by a college? Etc.
2016-2017 Academic Goals
My expectations are that each student athlete maintains a high academic standard. Specifically my expectation is A’s and B’s in all classes. UIL eligibility only requires A’s B’s and C’s however I hold swimmers more accountable because I know each of you are capable. This offseason we had 70.2% of our swimmers maintain A’s and B’s on their report cards. As a team, looking to next year our goals are:
Realistic Goal: Ideal Goal: OMG Goal:
75% A’s and B’s 80% A’s and B’s 85% A’s and B’s
100% passing 100% passing 100% passing
Realistic Goals: Anything you realistically believe you will accomplish this year in the classroom? Passing all STAAR tests? Getting involved in a club? Passing all of you classes? Etc.
Ideal Goals: Anything you ideally wish to accomplish this year in the classroom? Commended on STAAR tests? A’s and B’s in all classes? Earning college credit through exams/courses? Etc.
OMG Goals: THINK LIMITLESSLY! What are the goals you that will drive you all season? These are the “stars” you’re reaching for! All A’s all year? Jumping into top 10%? Jumping into top 25? Graduating top 10? Etc.
Write down your goals and put them somewhere where you are reminded daily of WHY you are swimming each morning. You will also submit your responses during your first afternoon
practice the first week of school. This will be your first grade in the gradebook.

Expectations
Practice Expectations
How we arrive: Swimmers are expected to be at the pool 15 minutes early (5:45). This allows for time to stretch, warmup and become aware of the goal for the day
How we act: Support one another. We train as a team. We compete as a team. We succeed as a team. We must eliminate divisions.
How we are prepared: Take the necessary steps before practice. Check the team websites and emails for last minute updates.
How we enter the water: Together, as a team, and “on the top.” We need to become more disciplined in how we attack training!
How we train: Respect one another. Be courteous in the lane and follow “lane etiquette.” A lot of our focus will be on race pace, especially with our facilities. It’s easy to go through the motions, but it’s obvious as well. We know your race pace.
How we are a team: “Together Everyone Achieves More” I’ll say it again: We train as a team. We compete as a team. We succeed as a team.
How we handle success: Confidence, courage, and humility. We swim without limits. Be excited by your success! But keep your eyes humbly focused on what’s ahead.
How we handle failure: Confidence, courage, and humility. We swim without limits. You learn more from failure than success. Find the positives and what can be improved. Keep your eyes humbly focused on what’s ahead.
A few noteworthy expectations:o Nobody has perfect technique. You can always improve some aspect of your strokes. The
coaches know what to do to make you improve. We see what you cannot. You feel what we do not. We must work together to make your technique the best it can be.
o Race pace training. The idea is to train at the speed you would be racing. We had tremendous success with this last year. It will remain an occasional part of our training regimen.
o “Game face” is a term we use so that you bring yourselves to a state where you are prepared to go to battle. This is not a time when you should joke around or survive in practice. We should aim to thrive when our game faces are on!
o Your training group is where you will succeed the most. Don’t argue with your role, embrace it. o Swim practices are subject to the weather. Bring dryland clothes to each swim practice that we
have. It’s possible we will take the bus from the pool to the high school to have dryland practice.
o Bring a towel, cap, goggles, water bottle, and swim suit to every practice. o If you wish to drive yourself or ride with a teammate to the high school you will need to fill out
the required transportation release form
Meet Expectations
How we arrive: Swimmers are expected to be at the bus pickup location on time. Swimmers are also expected to be behind the blocks on time and in the warmup pool on time. No exceptions.
How we act: Support one another. Empty bleachers are happy bleachers. Parents love to see our team lining the side of the pool and other teams hate when they’re outnumbered. Put on a show and take no prisoners!
How we are prepared: Take the necessary steps before meets. Identify your goal/s for the meet and prepare yourself mentally to attack each swim!
We train as a team We compete as a team We succeed as a team
How we enter the water: Together, as a team, and “on the top.” We need to become more disciplined in how we attack meets. We should all be in the water for warmup no matter when your first swim is.
How we compete: Physically, mentally, and emotionally tough. “Coach I can’t” is a curse on this team. Move behind the blocks, appear ready. Fake it and you’ll feel it! I never allow swimmers to scratch barring physical harm. Don’t ask.
How we are a team: “Together Everyone Achieves More” I’ll say it again: We train as a team. We compete as a team. We succeed as a team.
How we handle success: Confidence, courage, and humility. Allow your positive performances to snowball! Nothing feels better than accomplishing a goal that you worked towards.
How we handle failure: Confidence, courage, and humility. We swim without limits. You learn more from failure than success. Find the positives and what can be improved. Keep your eyes humbly focused on what’s ahead and focus on your next race.
A few noteworthy expectations:o Swimmers are swimmers. Not fans. At dual meets and invitationals, stay out of the stands. If
your parents need to get your attention, you’ll still need to remain on deck. o Give your all on each event. Regardless of experience, times, speed, etc. each swim is an
opportunity.o Keep your focus and your emotions in check. Bad swims happen. Obsessing over a poor swim
will only lead to more poor swims. o We WILL have the best sportsmanship in the state. We will applaud other teams when they
deserve it. We will respect other teams and their parents even when they may not deserve it. We will thank every coach we swim against and shake every swimmers hand at the end of the meet. We cannot control the actions of others, but we can control our reactions.
o Bring a water bottle and snack to each meeto Unless there is an obligation that the swimmer cannot avoid, the expectation is that the
swimmer stays with the team until the meet has ended. They can then leave with their parents once they have emailed or given a note to the coaching staff
Meet Attire Expectation Dual Meets and Smaller Invitationals
o Suits: Swimmers are expected to wear the team swim suit that was issued to them. These suits are to be used for 2 years and ONLY to be used at THESE meets. If you only use it at dual meets/invitationals and take care of the suit and follow instructions on maintaining it, it should last MUCH longer than 2 years.
o Attire: Swimmers are expected to wear a Granbury Swimming Shirt/jacket/or sweatshirt. A generic Granbury High School shirt will also work. No other sports/clubs!
TISCA (to attend, must meet the TISCA qualifying standards in at least 1 event or be on a relay)o Suits: Swimmers are allowed to wear suits of their choice to compete in this meet. They may also
borrow from the limited quantity of suits owned by Granbury ISD. However, if lost/stolen/ripped these suits must be reimbursed the cost in a check made out to the Granbury ISD swim team booster club (Men’s Jammer $135; Women’s suit $140). The suits are to be returned the practice after TISCA dry, in a quart sized zip lock bag, with the size written on the outside of the bag in sharpie.

District (to attend, must be named to the district team and compete in at least 1 event)o Suits: Swimmers are required to wear the district suit that is issued to them. These suits are reused each
year and are maintained with IMPECCABLE care. The suits are to be returned the morning after the district championships dry, in a quart sized zip lock bag, with the size written on the outside of the bag in sharpie. if lost/stolen/ripped these suits must be reimbursed the cost in a check made out to the Granbury ISD booster club (Men’s Jammer $35; Women’s suit $50)

Warmups are to be returned by the week before finals in the spring. No other sports/clubs! Parkas can be rented for this meet as well.
Academic Expectations
How we arrive: Swimmers are expected to be at each class on time and setting an example for all other GISD student athletes and GISD students
How we act: With respect and excellence. You have an extremely impressive expectations to live up to. How we are prepared: Pirate and lady pirate swimmers are always prepared for class, regardless of
swimming requirements. Being a student athlete does not mean that academics are prioritized over athletics! It means academics are a priority you can manage with other commitments. Do not blame swimming on your inability to be prepared for school.
How we are a team: “Together Everyone Achieves More” I’ll say it again: We train as a team. We compete as a team. We succeed as a team. This applies to your studies as well. The best study groups we ever had were full of swimmers in the courses we took or who had already taken the courses we were taking. Utilize your natural resources.
How we handle success: Confidence, courage, and humility. Allow your positive performances to snowball!
How we handle failure: Confidence, courage, and humility. You learn more from failure than success. Find the positives and what can be improved. Keep your eyes humbly focused on what’s ahead and focus on your next task in your class.
A few noteworthy expectations:o My expectation for all student-athletes in our program is to maintain A’s and B’s on their report
cards. C’s will be met with discussions with the coaching staff. Failures will result in intervention and possible dismissal from the team.
We train as a team We compete as a team We succeed as a team
Expectations Outside of GHS
W.W.P.T. – Think before you act “What would parents think?” “What would principals think?” “What would Pullanos think?” We maintain a strong social media policy. We cannot control your thoughts or free expression outside
of our program. However, we expect excellence. There’s nothing impressive about a twitter page that is a subject of conversation with district administrators, students, or teachers.
Understand pros and cons of “Swimcest”: The action of cordial (i.e. courting or dating) relationship between two swimmers. My fiancé was on my college swim team. Understand that being on a team with someone can drive a couple together OR apart, it can also drive teams apart in certain situations. Do not allow personal matters to affect swimming matters.
Drug or Alcohol use of any kind is prohibited from the Pirate swimming program and when discovered will result in dismissal from the team.
Conflicts
Conflicts with other UIL activities: If a student athlete has a conflict with another UIL activity (theatre, other sport, band, etc.) then they must meet with the coaching staff at least a week ahead of time. The swimmer can miss the swimming activity, so long as it is NOT TISCA, Districts, Regionals, or State. No flexibility there.Conflicts with out of school activities: If a student athlete has a conflict with an out of school activity (club sports, garage band concert, improve competition? Etc.) then they must meet with the coaching staff at least a week ahead of time to conference. Typically they can attend the event so long as the conflict isn’t with TISCA, Districts, Regionals, or State.Conflicts with family emergencies: If a student athlete has a conflict with a family emergency (funeral, sick relative, etc.) they should attend the event. If at all possible plan them around District, Regionals, and State. However, emergencies are completely understandable. Conflicts with illness: If a student athlete claims they cannot participate in an event because of illness, depending on severity of illness, they are still required to attend:
Not sick enough to stay home from school: Swimmer is expected to attend the event (practice, meet, competition, etc.) and give full effort.
Possibly sick enough to/should have stayed home from school: Swimmer is expected to ATTEMPT the event (practice, meet, competition, etc.) and give full effort. In the event they cannot physically participate for health reasons, they are excused.
At home from school with doctor’s note: Swimmer is expected to communicate with coaching staff of illness and may be asked to present doctor’s note.
Hospitalized: Swimmer is expected to communicate with coaching staff via parent or captains of hospitalization. At this point the student needs to focus on rehabilitation.
Conflicts with injury: If a student athlete suspects they have an injury that prevents them from swimming they should meet with the training staff to a.) Determine severity b.) Determine treatment c.) Schedule rehab. Practice attendance is required and participation is required unless the training staff or physician communicates the injury is too severe to
We train as a team We compete as a team We succeed as a team
participate in athletics. If a swimmer has an injury, the trainers contact the coaches immediately. Swimmers cannot sit out of practice without a doctor or trainer note. Conflicts with Holidays: In general, holiday practices are not mandatory but HIGHLY SUGGESTED *WINK WINK* However, if a swimmer has an unavoidable holiday obligation (vacation, dinner at grandma’s, out of town, etc.) they are excused from the required holiday practices. Prompt and direct communication with the coaching staff or captains is appreciated and expected.Conflict with others (coach, parents, and teammates): In the case of a conflict between two or more individuals in the Pirate Swimming family, the following steps should be taken:
o Communicate with the captains (and coaching staff if absolutely necessary)o Privately and calmly approach the individual(s)o Identify the problemo Determine a solutiono Put the matter behind you
Conflicts with Tutorials: Starting in the 2016-2017 Season, we will be implementing a new system to be more consistent with attendance policies when it deals with tutorials. Practice ends at 7:30, which gives swimmers 45 minutes to get ready and then get over to the high school and still have the option to attend tutorials from 8:15-8:45 every day (last year, I would drop the bus swimmers off every day between 8:10 and 8:15). HOWEVER, if earlier tutorials are needed, a swimmer can get out 15 minutes early ONE day per week. If they are planning to get out early, they will need to notify coaches A DAY IN ADVANCE with a solution to the loss of practice time. Do not tell us at 7:00 that you need to get out at 7:15. Conflicts with attendance: Starting in the 2015-2016 Season, a 90% High School practice attendance was required to participate in meets. We are continuing to implement this policy. Any swimmer with 90% attendance or higher will be eligible to compete at competitions. Swimmers without a 90% attendance will not be allowed to compete OR travel to competitions.
Immediate communication with the coaching staff in the event of a conflict is expected. Lack of communication will not be tolerated and may result in punishments (for lack of communication. Not lack of attendance). If you do not attend practice, I should receive an email by 8:45 with an explanation.
Conflicts in general: In life pointing out problems does not solve them. In the case of a conflict, always communicate with the coaching staff as early as possible and always consider the following:
“Come to me with a solution, not a problem.”
Consequences
Consequences are at the discretion of the coaching staff. It may be as minor as an informal meeting, or as severe as dismissal from the team. Examples of consequences are listed below:
Practice ejection. Purpose: to avoid distracting teammates and set up an informal/formal meeting Informal 1-on-1 meeting. Purpose: to correct unwanted behavior Formal 1-on-1 meeting. Purpose: to permanently correct unwanted behavior Formal meeting with parents. Purpose: to permanently correct unwanted behavior Staff Infection. Purpose: to teach accountability and responsibility Practice suspension. Purpose: to correct unwanted behavior and avoid distracting teammates Dismissal from the team. Purpose: self-explanatory

Standards
Lettering Policy
1. Regardless of other qualifications, the athlete must finish the season in good standing and committed to participate as a member of the swim team the following year (exception: seniors)
To earn a varsity letter, the swimmer needs to meet at least one of the following criteria:
1. Swimmer must attain an “Automatic letter” time in at least 1 event
2. Swimmer must attain a “Letter consideration time” and meet at least 90% practice attendance and academic eligibility requirements.
3. Swimmer must qualify for regionals by placing 1-6 at district
4. Swimmer must be on at least 1 “A” relay at the district championship meet
5. Be a senior who has successfully completed at least 3 years as a member of the Granbury Swim Team
Swim Class Grading Policy- We do not require swimmers to be in the swim class, however those that will receive a PE credit & grade for completion of the swim class. With recent changes to GPA calculations, GISD has asked all extracurricular activity courses to be more consistent with their grading policy. This policy DOES however also apply to those NOT in the swim class. The following is how swimmers will be graded each six weeks:
3 major Gradeso Practice Attendance: If attendance is above 80% (on average attending 4 practices per week)=100%o Meet Attendance: If all meets for that grading period are attended OR excused by coaches = 100%o Coachability: If the swimmer has no conflicts with the coaching staff or teammates during grading period = 100%
At least 10 minor gradeso 6 x weekly goal remind submissions
Every Sunday at 5:00 the coaching staff will send a remind with a survey to be filled out for the following week. It will include 2 questions:
(1) what is your short term goal this week? (2) what is your long term goal this year?
It is fine for the 2nd answer to be the same but we hope you achieve your short term goals each week and set new ones each Monday. Due Monday AM by 6:00 AM
o Post Meet Analysis remind submissions After each meet a remind will be sent out with 3 questions:
(1) What are 2 things you feel you did well this meet? (2) What is one thing you wish to improve from this meet? (3) What is one thing you learned this meet?
o Miscellaneous practice test sets
It is VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY EASY to get a 100 in the swimming class and requires VERY VERY VERY VERY LITTLE WORK! In our experience, we’ve found that goal setting and self-analysis are incredibly useful tools in
