The Dark Night

At the top of the poster in a bold black font is the slogan, “Welcome to a world without Rules”. The slogan connotes the film as being a playground in the city where there is no authority or regulations, straight away the audience can think of this as being a very action enticed film. The quote emphasizes the image and everything that’s happening on the poster, as well as being a justification for the film.

The background features a skyscraper enraged in a firing blaze in the shape of the iconic Batman logo. Around the centre is the falling debris and smoke from the fire, created by the antagonist to which the protagonist is there to conventionally protect the city from. The graphic image justifies the films themes and the slogan of which is at the top. Notably there is no ’Batman’ title on the poster, just the name of the film however the strong iconography of the Batman symbol is straight away easily recognisable and can be identified. Below the building is the mid long shot of Batman, showing him from a low angle looking up upon him as an angelic superior hero figure, the light surrounding him justifies his good will and purity. His character is positioned at the front of the poster, ahead of the catastrophic events that are happening behind him showing

he is at the forefront of all the crime in the city. Standing tall and serious his body language translates his strength and power, dressed in an all black costume suit his dress sense and body language create a strong sense of enigma and mystery. Again this image alone is pure iconography and can instantly be linked to his character as Batman is a cult.

In the lower third of the poster is the cast; running central across the print are the 7 star names. Like Goodfellas this is a U.S.P with the cast including star actors such as Christian bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Heath Ledger. Being an all famous cast it’s a huge attraction for a mass market to see it, just to see the actors together.

The title, highlighted against the dark background in a bright white sans-serif font is again promoted by the iconic brand association of the Batman symbol that sits behind it, surrounded by a bright shining light it signifies the protagonists purity and importance among the city. Below is the credits, listing the complete cast and crew of the film, whilst this is a generic convention and is part of the legislation of the understanding of the film and the people who are involved it’s also advertising the star actors and crew. At the bottom of the page is the release date, stated “JULY 18th” in bold white capitals. Sitting directly underneath the lighter coloured the credits the text is an instant attraction and draws you in, whilst it promotes and advertises the film, clearly stating the release date, informing everyone when the film is available.
