Welcome to the IB Middle Years Program (MYP)! This exciting program provides a framework of academic challenge that is based on MYP’s three fundamental concepts of holistic learning, communication, and intercultural awareness. Throughout your academic career, you will develop the traits of the IB learner profile: inquirer, knowledgeable, thinker, communicator, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-taker, balanced, and reflective.

Course Description: The primary objective of the course is to increase students’ understanding and appreciation of World History while helping each student succeed on the AP World History Exam. AP World History will require more time and effort than honors or standard courses. Students and parents should keep in mind that this course is taught at the college level. There are major differences in the level of work and expectations from a high school to a college course. Students will be expected to do a significant amount of reading and writing outside of class.

The course will cover these five themes: 1) Interaction Between Humans and the Environment 2) Development and Interaction of Cultures3) State-Building, Expansion, and Conflict4) Creation, Expansion, and Interaction of Economic Systems5) Development and Transformation of Social Structures

The 2019 AP World History Exam is on Thursday May 16, at 8 a.m.!

Structure of the AP World Exam: 2 hours and 55 minutes

55 multiple choice questions o 55 minutes, 40% of score

3 Short Answero 4 available prompts, choose 3, 40 minutes, 20% of score

1 Document-Based Question o 15 minutes to read and 60 minutes to answer, 25% of score

1 Long Essayo Choose from 3 prompts, 40 minutes, 15% of score

Assessments – 40%Classwork – 40%Homework – 10%Quarterly – 10%

A minimum grade of 50% will be given for all assignments of assessments for which the student made a good faith effort, as determined by the teacher. If a student does not work on an assignment or assessment, the teacher will assign a grade of zero.

Readings: A reading calendar will be issued monthly. Nearly every reading assignment will have reading check. These reading checks count as homework grades. The 2 lowest “reading check” grades will be dropped each quarter.

Late Work: Please endeavor to turn all work in when due. If you have a reason that the work must be late please meet with the instructor. Students are expected to complete assignments, in full, to the best of his/her ability and students should take advantage of tutoring and reteaching opportunities so that the student can submit his/her best work. Late assignments may be penalized up to 10% each day late up until five classes (no more than 10 school days). This means that any makeup work will need to be turned in within two weeks of an absence.

Re-takes:Any assessment that a student wishes to redo should be discussed with the instructor. Please plan to make up missed assignments outside of class. Any redo, such as test

corrections, need to be done within 10 school days from the date the grade is published.

Academic Integrity: In order to promote the pursuit of academic excellence and learning, Anne Arundel County Public Schools expects its students to conform to specific standards of academic integrity. Academic integrity means exhibiting honesty in all academic exercises and assignments. Academic dishonesty refers to any form of misconduct that occurs in relation to all formal academic exercises. Breaches of academic integrity include, but are not limited to:

Use of notes on a test Any writing on body or clothing Verbalizing or signaling during a test Stealing a test Breaking any of the test taking standards Advising another student who will take the test what material is on the test Copying information from the internet or book without proper documentation Sharing of homework assignments without permission

** AP Teachers take this very seriously, if a student breaches their academic integrity, they WILL receive a “0” on the assignment and be referred to administration.**
