Ask your child: The new Read Aloud is Meet

Felicity. This book is helping me to learn more about colonial life.

This week I read many poetry books. As I read this writing, I make a picture in my mind? Does this writing help me look at something in the world in new ways? Does this writing give me a certain feeling or make me think or ask questions? Does this poem have music?

I continue to learn strategies to help me figure out unknown words when I read. Ask me a few strategies. Examples: using picture clues, skip and go on, context clues, other words around the unknown words.

I continue to practice the reading comprehension strategy, asking questions, before and during my reading of books, articles, texts.

I am learning to make inferences when I am looking for information in a text.

As I read to learn about colonial life, I am using the I Remember strategy. Ask me what I have learned about Colonial Times as I read a Question/Answer book.

Writer’s Workshop: Ask your child: I am a poet! This week I have been learning strategies poets

use to write poems. As a poet I am finding a moment, detail or object that holds

a big feeling. I am using my poets’ eyes and seeing this ordinary thing in a new way! Poets write about it experimenting with line breaks.

I am trying to read my poems with “music” in my voice! I wrote a paragraph about my “brightest” quality.

Math Workshop: Ask your child: Tell me about the calendar markers on the November calendar grid.

What kind of clocks are on the markers? What patterns have I observed in the November calendar grid?

Ask me to tell you the expanded form for these numbers, 879, 303, 1,345.

Ask me to add 56+78 on an open ended number line. Ask me to subtract 78-32 on an open ended number line. Ask me to give you a story to solve comparing ages of 2 people! I wrote a story problem for a classmate to solve. Ask me about the Math Work Place games called Hit the Target and Base

Ten Triple Spin! I am really thinking as I play these games and learning ways to strategize to win the game!

Word Study: Ask your child: I worked with my spelling partner and practiced my new set of

word study words. Ask me the word feature or sorting rule for my set of words.

Each day I “harvest” new vocabulary words during reading. I try to use these words in conversations and in my writing.
