Step # 3:

Identifying my company:

As I wrote in my Blog about Receiving My Company, I was a little disheartened in learning I did not have an Australian company. My hopes were definitely running high, but never the less, no use crying over spilt milk now, should I? As such this brought so many key concepts and questions to my head straight away. Who was this company? What do they do? Why does the logo look like a pointy strand of DNA? What does Gattaca even mean? What is their purpose? More questions just running through my head. Talk about brain overload. So browsing over the Gattaca PLC webpage: Gattaca PLC, my eyes wondered.

As it states in my blog, I have received the company Gattaca PLC. This organisation is a company used as an employment recruitment agency in the fields of Engineering and Technology. An employment recruitment agency is an organisation that endeavours to tie the needs of an employer with a possible employee that has contains skills and interest for the employer (BusinessDictionary.com 2017).Previously known as Matchtech, Gattaca has recently had a restructure and changed its company name to the parent body. There are brands such as Networkers and Matchtech that govern under Gattaca. More questions running through my head: How does such a recruitment company be so successful? Why did they really change their name?

After a few clicks, I found the annual reports and figure next step download and or print because I sometimes hate reading the iPad. I work better having a hard copy of the resource in front of me. I have read many reports of different things but an annual report. This is another whole different level. I was taught that annual report was a review and summary of a company’s financial reports for the year but never have actually sat down and read one. So having to look or should I say overview four (4) annual reports in a week has been full on. Brain overload. When I first started looking at the Annual Reports, I actually thought I had the wrong company as the front pages all had Matchtech Group Annual Reports. This is one of the reasons of how I found out Matchtech changed its name to Gattaca PLC.

The KC&Qs of what does Gattaca even mean, why does the logo look like a pointy strand of DNA, what are their values and what is their purpose produced lots of research? I really do not know why

they changed to the name Gattaca, but I found out that Gattaca stands for the genetic code of DNA. G stands for Guanine, A stands

for Adenine, T stands for thymine and C stands for cytosine. This gives me an idea of why the logo is a pointy DNA strand.

As for their values, it consists of: Be Inspiring, love your Job and Take Pride. These values for me as a person set great standards for a workplace because it is always good to know that a business with these values will succeed and they are values of my very own.

I recall a key concept and question on asking what the company’s purpose was. Yes, I have established that Gattaca is an employment recruitment company but I like that their purpose is to always engaging their staff, delighting their clients and promoting their clients.

STRATEGY PURPOSE

Their purpose states everything about their company: ‘Our employees are the heart of our business and it is because of their determination and our shared vision that we have grown steadily since 1984 and we are continuing to grow.’

Why would the company change its name? In 2016 there was a structural change for the company which saw three (3) distinct brands that merged to one single group called Gattaca. So as Matchtech is the branding designed for Engineering and Networkers is branding for Technology – Gattaca is the parent head. So for example a large organisation/business is in need of two employees: A Engineer, An IT specialist. That organisation/business can go straight to Gattaca and say I have two jobs specific for these fields can you please find me suitable candidates. Gattaca PLC has produced over so many thousands of jobs.

Gattaca PLC holds a current share hold price of 288.00p. This is equal to about AU$456.38. As this was the case a week ago when I was writing this, as with any stock market it will bounce up and down all the time. I checked today (23 March 2017) and even though it is only a few pence it still is a down for the company.

I couldn’t help myself and had to add the change of share price before submitting. Since the 23 rd of March (just shy of two weeks the share price value is at ₤294.00.

I have had a bit of trouble understanding the exchanging of currencies for the company. I found it was a bit intimidating as I am use to using AU$ and US$. Like yes I get that the figures are in large thousands and millions but I just the pound sign threw me off. This bring me to the point of the fact that Gattaca PLC has had an increase in revenue from 408.9m pounds (I couldn’t find the pound symbol in Word lol) to a 617.6m pounds in 2016. A copy of Gattaca PLC’s Annual Reports (2007 – 2016) can be found on Gattaca PLC Annual Reports. I have reviewed the last four (4) year’s annual reports.

So…... after a lot of reading or should I say overviewing and trying to find interesting stand out information about the reports, one thing I noticed about all four annual reports from the organisation is that the annual reports show similar structure. There were new introductions through these years. After first glance the question arose in my head is: Where are all the women? Their reports show photos of a mixture of men and women but their executive board over the past four years has consisted of males only. With only changing the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) once in 2016. This is probably due to the new structure of Gattaca PLC. There were many words throughout the report that were very new to me. This is making me interested and keen to learn new terminology for the world of Accounting. But I as I read over I kept asking myself what did that mean. When words were in acronyms I thought to myself yes there the words are stated there before it is shortened but what the actual word mean. For example, you got the usual acronyms like AGM – Annual General Meeting, but I’m referring to the ones in the statements like IFRS2. I didn’t realise its meaning until I asked my tutor.

Areas of the business that are important to me are their market dynamic and growth opportunities. This company has expanded so much and will continue to expand further internationally. It has been hard to research for this particular company. Like any business you would keep professionalism. From the reports I saw minimal challenges. There was a decrease in certain departments net income but that was explained that over the years upcoming projects it would bounce back. AS there was a decrease this was minimal impact to the net incomes results.

Gattaca PLC in the Media:

How does such a recruitment company be so successful? I wondered this and then I watched a couple of YouTube clips. I used a search of Gattaca PLC first but was limited with the search to Brian Wilkinson, chief executive of Matchtech Group PLC YouTube talking about the company, its business model and its strategy. Brian also talks about the change of acquisition of Networkers. Also Brian speaks of the possibilities of the future endeavours and the fact that Gattaca PLC is in fact a global business. Also I could find Gattaca Employment Advertisement . This clip was really encouraging and inviting to give an eye of opportunity what it’s like working for Gattaca PLC, with starting from the bottom and working towards the top and types of incentives that are offered. This fits in with their strategy. There are many opportunities for working for the company with the possibility of working at the international offices. GattacaPLC Taking Stock market is another article I could find as it informs the public about Gattaca undertaking majority stock in Resource Solutions Limited which is a niche engineering recruitment business. As I was having difficulty finding more sources of articles and clips, I thought maybe there might be more on Matchtech as that was the company name before.

Gattaca PLC information – This article represent information about Gattaca PLC and how the company has progressed over a year and the analysis the company.

Tessa Pillar (2016) states in her article on LinkedIn that there are many challenges faced in the recruitment agency. Following her article in 2015, last year she updated her list from 8 to 6 that are the most pressing challenges for recruiters. Some of the challenges named include: lack of tech professionals, legislation changes and slow hiring processes. Another challenge recruitment agencies face is when organisations change their recruitment strategies. Social media has made a large impact in allowing organisations to provide a way of insourcing new employment instead of just going through different recruitment agencies (Futurestep 2012). Greg Savage, a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of specialist recruiter Firebrand states ‘Instead of cutting recruitment companies out, I think we need is close relationships with a select group of specialised recruiters, set standard and benchmarks for them and then invest in that relationship’ (Futurestep 2012). I think this is a valuable statement because then a recruitment agency would be able to identify the time wasters and the possible qualified people. When I wrote time wasters in the previous sentence I refer to the people who are dishonest applicant (Recruiteze 2016). More challenges that arise within this industry are the increased competition, costs of keeping up and shortages of help (Recruiteze 2016).

Top 3 Blogs:

My top three (3) blogs were 1. DanielleCQU  2. AccountingWithTash  3. Katrina Brown

DanielleCQU – Danielle’s blog is my number one favourite because I automatically felt a sense of

welcome. I admit all blogs do, but the ‘Be audit you can be….’ Just makes me smile. Her blogs are so

catching. The titles are engaging you to want to read. As well as the blogs pictures. My favourite blog

of Danielle’s is her ‘Drum Roll Please’ or the ‘Let’s Play a Game’ blogs. Yes, they were

informational and great reads but I love how she puts funny memes throughout her blog.

AccountingWithTash –   Tas h’s blog stood out to me and is my second favourite because I am a sucker

for quotes. Tash’s quote is what initially makes this one of my top 3. Because it so true. Her layout of

the blog is so easy to navigate.

Katrina Brown  – I chose Katrina’s blog as my third because all of her blogs are so interesting. I can

relate to certain things she talks about. After all that what blogs are for telling your thoughts so maybe

someone can relate the way you do. Isn’t it? Some of Katrina’s blogs clearly pointed out KC&Qs

which was really interesting.  Might I just say that Katrina’s photography that is on the page is

amazing.

STEP 4:

When I first started writing this I had only made one draft. And didn’t create many blogs as we were supposed to. In my draft blog is a copy of Gattaca PLC’s spreadsheet that I created with the company’s financial statements.

However, when going over the assignments steps thoroughly that I had the right things in the right places, I made myself a new blog: My Gattaca Spreadsheet - STEP 4

Step 5 – Reflection of Chapter 2&3

Before I start can I just state: I really wish I had read these chapters well and truly before I had started researching my company.

Chapter 2: Understanding the Game - As I read through Chapter 2, I am constantly writing down questions that I am so unsure of or that I think wold they matter to the real world of business.

To start let’s say that in complete agreeance with Albert Einstein's quote of ' You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else'.  Coming from an athlete’s point of view, rules is always your advantage point to have the upper hand. So I can see why it would apply to accounting and business to an extent. Some of my initial KC&Qs I had included: financial statements – pretty sure I know what they are. Are footnotes important? What is accrual accounting? What does GAAP mean? Is it necessary? What are the rules of the game? Why are all these things important to accounting?

I saw that financial statements were introduced. I kind of knew about these just because I receive one every month from the bank to tell me that I am not really saving anything with always withdrawing to pay the bills and what not. Hahaha. But I want to say I didn't realize how much was connected to a simple document.

As I read more and more, I saw the introduction of new terms and acronyms for certain words and also organisations.  Who knew that there would be so many? It makes me intrigued about more learning. These rules will probably have me going crazy with learning all the name and their definitions. It’s good to know that GAAP is used as a header for all rules relating to the world of accounting. I need to write my own glossary. The word entity still gets me. I understand it but

sometimes I confuse myself. I had no knowledge of the Australian Accounting Standards Board. This has made me really do a little more research about them. Websites are so helpful. This gave me a better understanding of the conceptual framework. When it stated about having too many ‘shades of grey’ in the 2.2, you can’t have a rule for everything, my mind went to 50 Shades of Gray. Have you seen the second movie? I haven’t… off topic I know... Back to accounting… I love the fact that it says ‘we all bring our own different and varied prior knowledge’, I do this all the time. Link all the terms to previous jobs or sporting problems or events that I could connect to get a better understanding.

The accounting concepts took me by surprise though. With all the different realities of a firm. The frameworks. It made me question exactly what it is. After reading it the next few paragraphs, it made me realise accounting is everywhere, we just might not notice or see it. It reminds me of the TV show ‘NUMBERS’. The intro of the show goes (Cornell Department of Math n.d):

‘We all use math every day; to predict the weather; to tell time, to handle money.

Math is more than formulas or equations; it’s logic, its rationality,

It’s using your mind to solve the biggest mysteries we know’.

Accounting and businesses offer so many mysteries and unlock information.

When reading pieces on 2.4: Quality of Information, it was an eye opener to find out that relevance and faithful representation are two very important key quality characteristics a business can have. Now that I have read this chapter I am definitely going to have another look at the company’s annual reports because I think this will give me abit more of an understanding of changes that may have happened within my company. I think everyone knows what GPS stands for, growing up we had a GPS navigator when they were first invented for the car, look at today’s world you can access them via your phone. I mean like I know some of Einstein’s work but not really know this equation.

I think it is good to now have a better understanding of the rules of the ‘game of accounting’. I just really hope I can remember all of these things I am learning and use it further in life.

Chapter 3: Introducing financial statements. Financial Statements!!! Yay… said no one ever… jokes… But seriously when I get asked by my fellow colleagues to do data entering and going over figures for paperwork, they all look at me like a weirdo because I have a big smile on my face when I reply with a sure I can do that. Why you may ask? It’s simple, I like numbers. Figures in financial statements intrigue me. Now I must say I have read many reports of many things including some financial statements but never have I ever actually read a full annual report.

Reading this study guide gave me a few key concept and questions. Such included questions like: What is a parent company? What is the difference between a ‘group’ and a ‘company’? When dealing with accounting what does ‘consolidated’ actually mean? What’s the difference an ‘income statement’ and a ‘cash flow statement’? I also questioned about the different types of statements within an annual report. Like I stated earlier, I do wish I had read both of these two-chapter study guides before I had even looked at the annual reports for my company, because this would have cleared up a few of the KC&Qs that I had about matters of the annual reports.

With the help of my tutor explaining a few of my KC&Qs, this had been very beneficial. She explained a few terms to me. Which I really do appreciate. Balance sheets already knew abit from previous week. When I asked my tutor if the statement of the financial position the same as a balance

sheet she replied yes. Some companies don’t call it a balance sheet any more. When the paragraph introduced ‘income statements’, I can say I have a bit of understanding, but put it down to a statement that you would receive from a bank.

In 3.3 making sense of financial statements, ratios made me really look twice at the document. I know that sounds different but I am really fascinated at learning exactly how it falls into accounting, but I was a little confused because I know ratios to be for every something (a) is to something (b). So for example: for every 6 boys there are 10 girls - 6:10. Facts that Alexander Walls study that saw the barometer to measure changes in a firm’s past performance to predict future performances. Let’s say in knew nothing about this.

I am really liking this unit as I am always learning something new about accounting, which I haven’t already encountered.

More KC&Qs consist of: What is security analysis? What does it have to do with accounting? Accounting has so much structure. Is there a particular reason for this? I guess though I can answer this myself because all things/businesses/games and life should/must have structure to be successful. The information in 3.4 made me question what is meant by the true value of anything. Also what are dividends? Now I have to confess that I’m a bit lucky in a way of working at a high school at present as I am in a few math classes for the senior grades. I mention this because this term a certain class I was in were learning about interest, buying and investing and the last bit was materials relating to shares and dividends. SO I can admit I have a bit of a heads up with dividends.

A major KC&Qs that I am still trying to wrap my head around is the equations. I know it’s easy for long terms to be shortened by using acronyms or even letters. I just have to try to remember all of the equations. So I’m thinking a glossary would be a good idea. I mean what does EBITDA stand for? I mean that is a big acronym.

I know there is a lot to learn and really am looking forward to the rest of the term.

Very informative about your company in telling me exactly what the company does. Also interesting to know the different diverse areas they deal with.My company was from the UK as well so I know how you felt dealing with another country's company.Great use of tables and diagrams. I know you stated that they have been successful in the past 7 years, but maybe you might want to state the difference in revenue on how it has increased (if it has) in the text. I know it states it in the diagram below but reading in text before getting to the picture would be better.

KC&Qs are answered and great to now have that understanding about the UK having two company laws...., but i think there are a couple other questions that need to be addressed. Going to back to the comment of having the information written before Ethel picture: what are your subsidiaries? Where I stand pictures and diagrams back up our information.

Comments on others blogs were really supportive and positive. Linking in that how you related with the person's understandings was a good contributing factor.

You certainly made this part entertaining to read. I especially loved your question, ‘Why does the logo look like a pointy strand of DNA?’ I also loved that you found out the reason behind it, that was very interesting!

Also, you have to discuss your company with others.

I’ve noticed a few little errors with spelling. You’ve used ‘a’ some times where ‘an’ would be appropriate, just remember that if the following word begins with a vowel (well, vowel sound), it’s usually ‘an’.

“A (an) employment recruitment agency is a (an) organisation that endeavours”

“These values for my me as a person set great standards”

“Yes, I have established that Gattaca is a (an) employment”

Step 4

Input company’s financial statement

Wonderful use of formulae to check your numbers! Your numbers appear to be correct, I had a quick comparison between the reports and the spreadsheet.

Although, you don’t need to literally format your cells to be British pounds. When Martin referred to changing the currency, he meant keeping the same cell format just changing Cell G6 to be £‘000.

Your top 3 blogs have to be included in Step 3, not Step 4.

Step 5

I agree with you about the first statement, Step 3 should have been reading the chapters to prepare us for the analysis. That also seems to be the general consensus.

Step 4Input company’s financial statement

I assume your EOFY is 31 July? You have a row giving a balance at date of 26 July which cant be right. Row 23.

Change the $’000 in the rows below the years in each report to be pound signs not dollars. £’000

You need to get rid of any cells that have .00 decimal points after the number. The £’000 at the top of the column represent that the numbers on the spreadsheet are in the 1,000s so typing 8,311 for example means 8,311,000.

I would also recommend getting rid of the pound signs from the cells that contain the actual numbers. It is already inferred with the top of the column with the £

Statements in movement of equity I compared your spreadsheet to only 1 annual

report the 2016 one. This report was on page 70 as far as I could tell. I could not line up the figures you had in your spreadsheet with the annual report.

I’ll send you a picture of what I had done with converting this report. I’ll give an example of what I would have thought one row would look like (not including 2013 although it should be included):

2016 2015 2014Retained Earnings 40,504 36,648 33,091

Step 4 Continued…Input company’s financial statement

Income Statement Delete the .00 Change to the £’000 Cell B90 should be “Amortisation of

acquired intangibles” Cell B97 stick with “Taxation” as per the

annual report. Income Tax Expenses can mean a range of things. Taxation means Tax.

Cell B99 should be 2 rows, it has non-controlling interests.

Is the statement of comprehensive income required? Perhaps ask Tutor?

Statement of Financial Position Remove the .00 Change to the £’000 Great to see you using the Sum formulas Some cells are a different font size Example row

Step 5KCQ’s

I like your KCQ’s. I like how many questions you ask and your thought process. You had the same thoughts as me with 50 shades of grey

- Spelling error on page 4 the word “would” is spelt wold.

- Spelling error on page 5 first line: the word used is in where it should be “I’m”- Grammar error on page 5 3rd paragraph: the word should

be “names” plural.
