Lesson 1: Expected vs. Unexpected Behaviors and Good vs. Uncomfortable Thoughts Objective: Understanding Expected and Unexpected behaviors in all the places student may play, learn and go is essential for setting students up for social and emotional success. Students will be able to “behave” more appropriately for the situation and also have awareness that others start to have thoughts about their own behavior: good or uncomfortable. Uncomfortable thoughts may affect how others treat them or compromise social relationships. These concepts are a foundation for The Zones of Regulation program. Agenda: 1. Lead-in: Read You Are a Social Detective by Michelle Garcia Winner, with discussion of social thinking vocabulary. 2. Activity: Group Work-Primary grades categorized Expected vs. Unexpected Behaviors in various locations in the building and Intermediate grades generated ideas in groups. 3. 4th grade students learning about social Working together in groups to generate ideas ofExpected and Unexpected behavior in the Expected vs. Unexpected behaviors in a varietybook, You Are A Social Detective. of locations in the school.

Students presenting their group work and thedifferent behaviors they came up with. Theyalso had to share why someone might think abehavior is Expected or Unexpected or whatkind of thought someone might have about aparticular behavior.

Parents!Here are some tips to reinforce the concepts from this lesson at home:

Start labeling and identifying behaviors that you observe as either Expected or Unexpected. Or for example, use the language before you give a direction, “Right now, it’s expected that you go upstairs, brush your teeth and get ready for bed.”

Talk about what would be expected before you go to a location or place (ie. doctor’s office, family party, grocery store, etc.)

Let your children know what kind of feelings and thoughts you have when they show Expected or Unexpected behavior.

Utilize the concepts from a Social Behavior Map (shown below) to work through any Unexpected behaviors to Expected behaviors.
